  1. Early Supeman strips are great. It is a little difficult to scan the strips due to size. Many strips like Flash and Tarzan were full pages but I haven't seen any full page Superman Sunday pages. I am happy with the halves which are still difficult to store.
  2. From Alter Ego #47, "Baker of Cheesecake" by Alberto Becattini, referring to the Negro Romances #4 cover: "...there is something "Bakerish" about this cover (the guy in the car, especially has a "Baker face", with eyes drawn far apart). Jim Vadeboncouer, Jr., for one, disagrees, but my guess is that Baker at least pencilled it (with inks, perhaps, by Vince Coletta or Giordano)." I wish I had a copy to see for myself. I have been flying blind on this and just digging out what I can find with a Baker cover or story but Alberto has a great article in Alter Ego 47. Baker fans should get a copy. I love the articles in AE and the details but I miss the glossy color of the Comic Book Marketplace. I guess production cost would be too high. But the Baker stuff looks good posted on this thread. Baker not only did Canteen Kate for Fighting Marines but he also did Leatherneck Jack. This is probably his most gruesome cover. I think Jack's girl friend could have been Asian as drawn by Baker but they didn't use the correct color mix. Canteen Kate was so animated. Full figure drawings and action-packed stories resulted from a lot of talent and hard work. bb
  3. I don't have a good scan but here is the small copy that I found.
  4. By the end of the war, Hitler was a joke. Superman fans got the last laugh. Their hero has outlived the Third Reich by over sixty years. bb
  5. A lot of the Fox and Fiction House titles look like Baker has done pencils but someone else has finished. The All Top cover may be done by Baker but Jo Jo has a similar look. The appearance of the background characters suggests that the rest of the work on Jo Jo was Kamen. Webb also had a similar style. All Top has some pretty good Phantom Lady stories. Fight, Jumbo and Jungle have art by Baker but I don't know if anyone gives Baker credit for any of the covers. bb
  6. And a couple more Amazing Ghost Stories were found on line. I like the covers but no Baker inside. bb
  7. Baker didn't do any covers for Dear Lonely Heart but they did use one of his South Sea Girl stories as a romance. This splash is from Seven Seas 2 and the story page is from DLH 3. Notice that the bare midriff has been colored in. The characters are the same but the names have been changed to protect the innocent. and the cover since it isn't in Gerber. There were some interesting stories in DLH 1. Wertham missed some of these.
  8. I had a few extra Baker issues that I had not scanned yet I think. bb I am wearing the brown fedora and betting the house on the #6 horse.
  9. I thought Canteen Kate deserved a little better exposure. I found this scan on line. bb
  10. Billy Parker posted this in the GGA thread. bb
  11. Baker is also accredited with this Nightmare cover.
  12. South Sea girl from Seven Seas #1 Her reincarnation as Vooda Another Teen-age Temptations that I think I forgot Fighting Marines (wash cover?) with Canteen Kate story and a full size Baker cover
  13. The Frazetta work is all on ebay. I am also too poor to own originals. I only have a few prints (unsigned and not numbered). bb I do have a couple of pages of Buscema art which I like a lot. Birthday present from my wife many years ago.
  14. I thought that the engraving limited the amount of detail that could be transferred to the comic page. Frazetta was doing a lot more work for a page of comics than he needed to. Some of the details were lost for sure. My color copies are not from high resolution scans and some detail may be lost there. We need to see some White Indiana scans. I also liked this Sunday page. By the way the Thunda story is selling for $100,000 starting bid. bb
  15. A few more Bakers attached. My apologies for using scans made by someone else. I think this is from a link recommended by an article written by someone on board. bb Oops posted twice. bb
  16. A few more Bakers attached. My apologies for using scans made by someone else. I think this is from a link recommended by an article written by someone on board. bb Kate was also featured in the Fighting Marines. The early St. Johns issues are too big for Golden age boxes and have to go in the magazine boxes. I will dig those marines out if I can remember. This low resolution scan is one of my favorite covers. And I found another good scan of an all Baker issue.
  17. I noticed the original art for this Frazetta story is listed on ebay.
  18. The problem with Dollman is that the backup stories attract too much attention. bb
  19. Thanks for the giant robot post. New Comics had some nice Shuster art and you could tell that Siegel was writing Sci Fi stories. I found scans from New 6 that had a giant tank in the story. It reminded of me Paul covers from early Amazing and other Gernsback publications.
  20. Dollman had some pretty good splash pages. I found these on line. bb I love the mad scientists featured in these stories. DM reminds me more of Antman than the Atom. Hanks could have written that dialogue, e.g., "The days of Mankind are numbered...A new ruler shall inherit the earth..."
  21. I picked up a book of cartoons by H.T. Webster at the flea market in Myrtle Beach, SC last weekend. This cartoon from 1925 mentions everything that was good about summertime and being young except more time to read comic books. bb The beach is beautiful there and people were having fun like in Disney World.
  22. Anyone who has lived in Philadelphia should get a chuckle out of this story. bb Perhaps this is where the Coneheads started too.
  23. I bought this one because I saw the copy that BZ had and became interested in the history of the radio show. bb This is what I really started to collect but then everything else was interesting too. I sold part of Wally's collection so I could by this from Jon Bevans.
