Why the hell would someone jump right to the 150k asking price??? I dont care how much money you have to spend on comics, savings 10k(or more) is A LOT!

 

It's possible that Josh was negotiating a deal in the back ground and posted the sale once both parties agreed on price.

In my mind, there is no possible way that sold for 150k, maybe, MAYBE 125k but even that would surprise me.

When dealing with a one of a kind item what matters is what the person who wants it the most is willing to pay. You are seeing things through the eyes of the many. But the average joe did not buy this. The person who had the most financial resources who really wanted this is the one who bought it. It is easy to figure what a group of people will trend to. It is impossible to read the mind of one solitary figure, and figure out what he is willing to pay.

 

No, i understand that but it still seems odd to jump from 92k to the FULL asking price IF that is what happened. I dont care if you are a billionaire, you probably didnt get there by throwing money away. With the bid at 92k, why would anyone buy it for the full 150k instead of offering 120,130 even 140k which almost definitely would have gotten the book.

 

I would bet that Roy is right and a deal was brokered below the 150k despite what it says on the clink. I'll be shocked if it actually went for over 125k.

But the extremely rich throw away their money each, and every day they are alive. Whether it be furniture, decoration, parties, or any number of things designed to get the rich to throw away money. So now just because it is a funny book, all of a sudden the rich can't throw away their money? Crazy knows no bounds. And there are crazy rich people to presume that even a crazy person would limit themselves to not buying this is full hardy.

Remember the New Mutants 98 that went for $12,500? People thought that was a bogus sale until the buyer came forward. Of course this board boiled him alive for it. But none the less he came forward. Again, it was a solitary figure going against the grain. I presume this is the case as well. Again understanding group behavior is easy.

The real trick is understanding the individual. They at times can go against societal perceptions. Perhaps this buyer wasn't even investing in the comic. Did that thought even cross your mind? Perhaps he was willing to get the comic at any cost possible. There are people like that. Not everyone will have the same view on what something is worth. You need to understand that. One of a kind items can, and often have provided exceptions to the rule.

If you don't have the eye to determine if a raw book is unrestored or not, then yes you need to only buy slabs. The CGC will do the work for you that you cannot take the responsibility for yourself, and then at that point you must accept their decision in the grade, for you have no other recourse since you cannot make a judgement yourself. If you come into this hobby, make it your responsibility first to learn about how to grade a raw comic, and determine if it is complete and if restored or not. When you send it in, figure out what you think it will come back.. If you rely on the CGC to do all the hard work for you, then it's no wonder you come at me like you do. You have no respect for a person with a little more comic knowledge than you do. Understandable though if you back the CGC. You hold them in esteem over any single person. You need to see my eBay ID in order to verify my credibility? Maybe learn to determine if a person's statements make sense or not to you and have some faith in your belief in them.., rather than having to see something first to believe.. . if my statements don't make sense to you, perhaps you are not on the same level. so you are left to force the credibility issue. yes im not credible . I think the problem here is semantics. I mean what you are arguing is that this book is overgraded. Well guess what? Most people think the 9.9 Hulk 181 is overgraded. You are not the first to say that, and you will not be the last to say that. Then you come on with it is the book, not the number that matters. Well again you are not the first, and you are not the last to say this. And yes CGC exists because too many people do not take the time to properly examine a comic book for any inherent flaws. And because of that CGC is a thriving business. This also has been stated to the nth degree.

So basically what you are stating is not new, and this belief that you are educating the CGC masses with your insight is a complete lie that you have managed to fabricate inside your own head. Personally I could care less if you are an Ebay seller. That has nothing to do with your argument. Your argument is no more or less valid because of this. But your arrogance in believing that what you are saying is somehow revelatory in someway is very laughable.

If the seller were to look at the responses in this thread, I think it would motivate him to sell it at the $80,000 price being offered.

After all grading is very subjective . One mans 9.2 maybe another mans 8.5. What I really would like to see is the CGC graders notes on this book to see what the pregrader and the final graders gave it. After all we are talking about less than 1 point in the grades

even with a $500.00 difference Is it not possible that who ever bought or buys the book may believe it to be higher OR lower than the CGC grade of 8.5? I mean come on how many of us have bought a PGX book cracked it out and submitted it to CGC and a different grade higher or lower comes back. Just using that to make a point that grading is very subjuctive and if you asked 20 different people to look at the book in hand I would say you would get a range of 8.0-9.2. I understand that there is a big difference in price. However, if the buyer or potenial buyer agrees with the grade the Dr gave it and is completely happy . Is there anything wrong with that?

 

Its a totally different situation if he sells it as a 9.2 and the buyer is unhappy and wants to return the book. As long as the Dr. refunds the money or adjusts the price accordingly then that would be ok as well IMHO

Muscleshark bought a pressed, slabbed 8.5 book - he cracks it, offers up it for sale as 9.2 raw, and doesn't disclose the fact that it was pressed (which I personally don't care about) and that it was previously graded as a 8.5 (which I do care about).

 

If you don't see the blatant dishonesty in that, you shouldn't be selling here on the boards either.

 

On the side of being open minded, I sold a bronze key to Jive who thought it looked much better than the assigned CGC grade and so he gave it a straight resub and it went from a CGC 9.0 to a CGC 9.6. True story.

As far as disclosing pressing. I don't really prefer pressed books . However, some people say its ok some say its not. This issue is like trying to bring peace to the middle east . So I am not going there

Not to be overly pessimistic, but to think that you're going to generate enough money to cover all of expenditures necessary for a qualified attorney to bring Dupcak to justice here on these messages boards is insane. You're looking at a minimum of six figures, hours and hours of time spent and who's to say he doesn't deny it all, hire his own defense team and counter sue you right back?

 

Uh, no. I think you misunderstand the situation and the proceedings. First, it wouldn't cost six figures, as I believe Mark is simply retaining this attorney as specialized help. This isn't going to cost six figiures. I think Mark will be doing a great deal of the work, but as he mentioned, he may need oe help with respect to how family court works, issues about who the judge is, nuances with regards to child support

Second, this isn't a situation where he can counter sue. This is a child support hearing in family court. If he wanted to sue Jan, he'd have to do so in a separate action.

I haven't misunderstood anything. You are kidding youself if you don't think Dupcak if he feels he is wrongly accused wouldn't file suit against esquirecomics or anyone else whom he feels is ruining his buisness and public reputation. Simply bringing up what some feel are unethical buisness practices at a single custody hearing and to think that you're going to get the answers you're looking for isn't even realistic.

At the moment I would call paying $12,500 for a 9.9 New Mutants #98 a gamble.

Why is that, because a grader or two could fall by the wayside, and a much easier grader come along giving out 9.9's like there is no tommorow. Yes in 9 years only 1 9.9 New Mutants #98 has been given out during this companies existence, but here is a newsflash. 9 years is not a long time, and a lot can happen in a short period of time. Want proof? Check out the old numbers for Amazing Spider-man 230, and 301 in 9.8. For the longest time there was only 1 or 2 in census for ASM 230. In fact a couple of years ago it was at this number. Same goes for 301 as well. For the longest time there was less than 10 in census. Even after Spider-man 3 hit the theators. Now look at both of them. ASM 230 has 21 9.8's in census, and ASM 301 has over 39 of them. The value on both has dropped like a rock.

At the moment CGC does not give out many 9.9's, and 10's. I'll grant you that. But that is at the moment. You are depending your future on a company that is only 9 years old. Most fashion companies are older than 9 years for crying out loud. In 10 years we will have a much, much better picture of this company and the 9.9's it hands out.

It says 6 customers, so maybe it was not a huge amount of people. I was just guessing it was a huge amount of people since there were 5 bottles of wine served. I did not take into a account that these people maybe alcoholics.

Similar to coin craze years back, when an NGC MS70 would sell for 20 times what an NGC MS 69 would sell for, yet they were IDENTICAL coins. The trade was about the holder.

 

This book is a $40 to $50 book. It is being dressed by plastic with a grading label on it, but it is a common book, with no unusual printing defect flaws in run, no great warehouse fire story to eliminate 95% of the population. Virtually any and every comic collector, like the 12 year old who spends his paper route money on it, have a copy of this book in as issued condition. It is a ultra common.

 

But so what, if someone wanted the best graded example right now, then there is a premium, to land the only 9.9 Maybe this purchase price represents 1 hour of the buyers time. Maybe he would have gambled it away at the blackjack or craps table (as many people do all the time) but chose to spend money more wisely than that and have something to show for it. Buyer seems thrilled with purchase, price is reasonable as of today.

If you think about it, if you take away the super expensive wine the total amounts to $1641 plus tax plus gratuities. Making the total about $2,000 without the wine. Now take into account the huge amount of people at the gathering, and my guess is that dining out there is not as expensive as one would imagine, especially if you take out the wine.
