From what I have noticed, there is actually a larger market for low-grade rookie cards like this than higher grade because they are more affordable and more people are able to buy them.  Having said that, I would get them authenticated by whatever grading agency you choose (hint: SGC is great for vintage) - just know that when you go to sell, they won't fetch as much as higher grade copies.

Edit: I should have read the thread before I responded.  Glad to see you slabbed them, and you got a "2" - which is a good grade for a marked card.  Congrats!

Yeah I was happy with the grade and glad I got the sub grades.

  3. So I got my 50 card bulk sub back on Feb 2nd and while excited to have it return sooner than expected I was somewhat disappointed about the grades - at first...I received three 8.5's, two 8's five 7.5's and seven 7's.  32 of the cards were pre 1980 so I was under no delusion that there would be a surplus of 9's and 10's.  I was initially surprised that at least one of my six 1981 Rickey Henderson or five Harold Baines rookies did not come back a 9, but as I looked closely at my new slabs I noticed that they were indeed not well centered - or enough so to garner a 9.  This was a real lesson - that I was not as discriminating as I should have been.  Quite a few of my cards would have better grades had the centering been up to par.  For these situations where there are centering issues on a higher value card (say easily $100-150+ value) I would request sub-grades assuming that centering is the culprit lowering the final grade.

I do like the slabs better and I say this while also owning both PSA and BGS slabs.  I am a collector mostly as I have had my cards for over 30 years but I do plan to sell doubles, etc., to fund the addiction.  I do feel CSG grades hard but fair so I will be sending more.

  6. Does any company have more data analytics in the business world than Amazon?  Maybe, but they no doubt are at or near the top.  Yet their website crashed on Amazon Prime Day 2018.  They had all analytics available and still crashed.  What data analytics did CSG have available?  Best guess analytics?  Remember Ellen's Oscar 'selfie' crashed Twitter?  I believe there is no way CSG could have estimated/anticipated the amount of volume they have received.  I sent a 50 card bulk submission to CSG last month - how many 1,000's of others did the same since CSG started?   I also believe that all the grading companies are having serious issues with employee shortage.  It's like a perfect storm - much to the chagrin of the customer.

IMO, I would slab them for the memories and to preserve them. In terms of value, I can't really say.

Yeah, that is probably what I will do...damn, where is a Flux Capacitor when you need one? :-)

  8. Flashback to the summer of 1968...Buying my Topps wax packs, flipping, trading and sticking cards on rear bike stays for that motorcycle sound! And of course as any 12 year-old would do as not to get his cards mixed up with someone else's - why not inscribe your initials on them...in ink!  Question for the board - these worth anything?  Thanks
