  1. Well I got into a bidding war with someone over the D copy Teen-age Romances 23, leap-frogging over someone $10.00 at a time. I eventually prevailed. The most bids over any other romance item. Anyone like to come foward as the other bidder? It eventually went for 2.5X what it went for in '06 on Heritage. The Mile High TR 2&3, Heritage graded 9.4 and 9.0 and went for over a grand each in the John McLaughlin auction, got cgc'd at 8.0 and 6.5,respectively, and went for a third of what they originally did. Anyone like to admit to winning the Cinderelle Love 25 and the Romance and Confession Stories out there?
  2. One of the best chair covers IMO. No doubt the inspiration for the Lon Chaney shocker, also titled Man Made Monster, released a year or so later.
  3. I have a copy, but not with those colours. Great headlights.
  4. I agree - the tattoos make this even more over the top. Wanna bet the dwarf (midget?) was an actual person? He looks like he was taken from life. Publisher? Editor? Brother-in-law? We'll never know.
  5. Comixnoir, that is a GREAT pulp. I have wanted that one for a while. It ain't easy. Congrats! Thnx Ryan I found this buried on a weekly Heritage auction and got it for a decent price. Who knew?
  6. So Mr.Myst has joined the boards after bidding against me more times than I care to remember. Here's a pulpy pulp I hope you like.
  7. Since this comic is my avatar, I feel compelled to add my congats. (thumbs u
  8. It's my birthday so I thought I'd give this thread a bump.
  9. I already posted this on another thread- but it's worth a repeat.
  10. I bid the thing up to almost $575.00- then chickened out. Never understood why it looked so good for a 6.5- until now . Getting decent copies of that 17-19 run are the toughest. The camera logo can not be placed by the seller as far as I know.
  11. I have an opinion that the Wasp was the hottest female in the Marvel universe. She was always trying to get intimate w/ Pym who was always so stuffy. She was only a teen-ager when they met and what was Pym? 35? And didn't they live common-law at first? Until Gwen came along, she was the sexiest. I agree, one of the hottest. Add the Black Widow to that list too! Brunettes Of course, Natasha!

  13. I had a copy of Lovers 81 that the guide says has a Baker story. It looked like Baker but had sudstandard inking, so it wasn't always apparent. Unfortunately, I never scanned the story and recently sold it. I am friends w/ the buyer so if there is interest I'll see if he can bring it by and I'll scan. Really nice copies of those Atlas's BTW
  14. The Love Romances 57, is inked by Vince Colletta- whether he drew it or not I don't know. Baker worked in Colletta's studio toward the end. The superior draughtmanship, especially on the tricky angles employed on WB 18 suggest Baker. The perspective is off on LR 93, though the girl looks Bakerish, meaning it was changed or more than one hand was resposible. Like his anonymous beginnings at the Igor shop, it looks like Baker's final work was bastardized, leaving an ignominious end to a brillant career.
  15. Nice copy! I'm still on the look out for a Wartime Romances 1. I bid on the one on the last CL auction but I'm pretty sure I would have had to pay close to $200 to get it. I stopped at just over $150. That reminds that I'm overdue in scanning some Baker books. Nice book! I hope you'll share more.
  16. Kinda familiar. (Yes, a classic image and maybe not a swipe at all.) Which came first? All of those CSI candidates look similar. That last drawing looks like a Baker panel from PL 18. I'd post it, but I don't want to harm the spine on my copy. In fact all those CSI drawings look like Baker interiors. He might have been swiping from himself.

  18. I'm with Ron, I have seen an increase in Baker prices recently. Maybe this indicates that demand is on the rise. However there are still deals to be had, you just have to be patient. I do think Authentic Police Cases are underrated and I've picked up some nice ones at reasonable prices. (Certain) APC's are still cheap. The Baker westerns are cheap. I love his Hawk covers, but they're hard to find. Fightin' Marines have great Baker covers and Canteen Kate stories, who I love, but they're fairly easy.
  19. The romances went up in the guide last year, reflecting whats been going on for awhile. I used to get Bakers for guide or a little over from the same dealer who's asking 8X for beater copies. You're right, they've been "hot" for some time, now some are trying to take advantage. I've never seen prices like these before. My point is, don't encourage this. and wait for the right price.
  20. I was at a con on the weekend where a dealer had many Bakers in low grade that he was asking a lot of money for. Here's a beauty I picked up online for $80.00. Don't overpay for these comics just because they're "hot".
  21. Ditto that! The book wasn't even discovered until a few years ago... Another toughy is Romance and Confession Stories #1, squarebound one-shot. As usual the D copy is the best I've seen.
  22. My copy of one that has appeared before.
  23. I see it on Comicconnect along with a big collection of romance. A few nice Bakers.
