the pursuit of nostalgia vs. living in the present
factory sealed replied to factory sealed's topic in Comics General
Any thoughts on this in comparison to your era? For me personally a large distinction of what drives my own personal obsession for nostalgia was the very deep rooted connection we had with a specific character(s) that spanned many different product channels between the comics first but also really well made cartoons, non-trading cards, aisle and aisles of action figures at different toy stores that were stacked to the ceilings, brilliant cinema movies, and allot of younger folks forget but in the 70s and early 80s there were even several super hero prime timeTV shows i.e. Spider-man, Captain America, Incredible Hulk etc. So what I'm driving at is there were so many different platforms back in this time frame to consume incredible quality content. It was just everywhere. And obviously when Star Wars came out and then the early 80s cycle of super hero cartoons i.e. MOTU, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Thundercats etc. this just took everything to a whole different level. Funny you mention Batman; before it was syndicated more broadly speaking so you could watch it week days after school in the early 80s, back in mid/late 70s it was only shown once a week and super early on Saturday mornings either 6AM or 7AM. Never missed an episode, Those cliffhangers were just simply awesome. -
I have friends that have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on vintage comics or toys all in the pursuit to experience or relive moments that have been permanently lost in time. Admittedly I will say unequivocally my "best" days are behind me and everyone from their own respective generation will have their particular specific favorites. I feel very fortunate to have grown up between the 70s/80s. What an incredible time period this was ranging from comics, cartoons, music, non-sports trading cards, movies, toys, and video games. That immense and incredible build up of anticipation before holidays and birthdays or riding your bike to a 7-11 in hopes that the new comic issues had been put out on the rack or walking into an arcade to hear that loud thunderous echoing of five different Defender and Centipede machines being played simultaneously etc. These core memories and moments are so very special to all of us. I am just curious; especially for folks with OCD type personalities such as myself, how do you balance your own pursuits of nostalgic bliss and collecting goals vs. an appreciation for living and enjoying in the present moment.

I would mount my 12 backs on those and just let them stand there for days; looking at them when I returned home from school. I still have my original case along with a bunch of loose figures. Good times. I remember vividly walking into a Kmart in late 70s and they had these gigantic fenced bins in the middle of the main store aisle stuffed with tons of the SW figures; this was in addition to the dedicated aisle and end caps in the toy section. I believe the selling price was $1.99 Fast forward 25 years later, a collector I know was going through a terrible divorce and offered me all of the original 12 backs, each one slabbed AFA 90 for $12,000. Fast forward another 20 years to present day, and that same lot would fetch easily $300K+ The cost of true nostalgic bliss for those with the means is absolutely priceless.

A question about what's hot and why
factory sealed replied to Mokiguy's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
100% spot on. That summer was absolutely bananas. We went to the movie theatre three straight weekends in a row on a Saturday and each time, complete sell out. Crowd reactions were insane during the movie and rank in my all-time top 5 of live fun movie experiences. It was also great hitting the toy and department stores for specific action figure variants and rare error cards. I even went in with a comrade and we bought a gigantic amount of those Topps wax pack box movie cards. These were uber high quality. Went to a collectible show event that summer and it was just a frenzy over anything Bats. Unfortunately I didn't really flip anything comic wise and was actually hoarding. -
Comiclink, Comic Connect, Heritage, etcetera... Wins...

My last order from them a couple months ago was just over $500 on 3 slabs. I took the least expensive option for $35. Could be value of your order and address/location. I pulled my orders from 2022; my most expensive single order was just under $1,000 on 10 slabs and I paid $25 for least expensive shipping option. -

The big excitement and opportunity here is for sealed items, as they won't be able to verify the internal contents. No different than say with toys that don't have a bubble nor window etc. For reference point, a NM slabbed factory sealed 1984 Star Wars IV fetched just under $2,100 on CL. As you climb in the NM/MT range, the multiples are gigantic.

What's the dealio with WorldWide comics
factory sealed replied to Courageous Cat's topic in Comics General
I've done many high dollar transactions with Stephen over the years. Can't say enough positive things about them. Really great to work with on price for volume. It can get very hectic on their side as they frequently hit the road for shows etc. Did you try emailing Sharon directly? If you need the addy PM me. -
I still have mine from the 70s! These are impossible to find in this kind of condition.
