  1. Tim's GL1 is on the back cover of Heritage auction catalog. :o

Didn't know that, that's pretty cool. One of the things that swung me to list it on Heritage over Clink was that Ed J promised it would get a full page spread in the catalog. Wasn't expecting it to get back cover exposure too.

Were you able to work out a deal beyond their usual commission? And did they make "suggestions" for your book?

  2. Was the white strip on the spine the same on your old 9.6?

Yeah, it was a fugly miswrap.

Normally not my preference to buy a book like that, but it's not like there were a bunch of other 9.6s and 9.4s to choose from.

    You are talking about Spunkydo's?

It looks to have a white spine, but not really crooked at all. Why fugly?

  3. Hi Everyone,

On the new CGC census regarding Showcase 22. There is now only two 9.0 copies instead of three. hm I will give the club a tally of the new additions and update.

Perhaps the CL 9.0 was resubbed. One out of many possible explanations?

The Comic Link copy looks like it was re-subbed if you look at the CGC gallery. Does that mean the Detective27kid copy has not be graded yet by the buyer? hm

I highly doubt that the old Clink 9.0 copy was resubbed. As Tim alluded in an earlier post, it is in very strong hands.

I actually meant re-holdered...since it was in the old CGC label...if you look at the #39 Overstreet on the first page ComicLink ad, this copy is in the old holder. I think CGC must have made a mistake it the last census and added the restored 9.0 copy to the universal grade in the last census. Since you mention strong hands, Palamas 7.5, Showcase22gr1959 8.5, Peewee2 7.5 are also in very strong hands. ;)

There would be quite an incentive to do a resub if it were an old label even if one weren't planning on selling it all all (your definition of strong hands?).

I recently had books I don't plan on selling resubbed. They were in old labels and the grading seemed about right. So since I was going to reholder them anyways, I accepted the risk and cost.

  4. Because another way to look at it is that, if in fact what you are saying is true, that it is "totally arbitary", then there would not be only 1 9.9 and 396 9.8s. If it was "totally arbitrary", then statistically there should be many 9.9s as well as many 9.8s.

Have you ever heard the term "grading on a bell curve"? It's a method of distributing grades in a predetermined manner and frequency, so that you have X number (or %) of A's, Y number of B's, Z number of C's, etc.

Same with CGC, and you'd have to be incredibly naive not to understand that. In fact, this methodology at the better-than-NM level is absolutely key to their very existence.

    Naive...hmmm...

I was discussing the concept of "totally arbitrary" which you brought up.

But now you bring up "grading on a bell curve." A 9.9 book would still stand above the rest of the 9.8s in a bell curve. You have simply allowed for a wider number of books to be 9.8s and much fewer to be assigned 9.9s. That would allow for a 9.8 to be "better" than another 9.8, but it would not allow for any 9.8 to be "better" than a 9.9.

That this 9.9 would've been a 9.8 on another given day may be true. What I'm saying is neither your argument of "totally arbitrary" nor "grading on a bell curve" support this conclusion.

  5. I remember talking to a collector in 1996, he paid $1,000 for a NM Fantastic Four #1, and $800.00 for a NM Green Lantern #1 out of the comic buyers guide in around 1982-1984 or so if I can remember.

And you actually saying this is the same thing?

No one is disputing that a high-grade copy of NM 98 has some value and that Deadpool is popular character.

What is so incredibly humorous is that someone is willing to pay such a huge premium for a totally arbitrary 1/10 of a CGC grade difference.

It's interesting isn't it that we choose to use information in whatever way suits our purpose.

Because another way to look at it is that, if in fact what you are saying is true, that it is "totally arbitary", then there would not be only 1 9.9 and 396 9.8s. If it was "totally arbitrary", then statistically there should be many 9.9s as well as many 9.8s.

A single 9.9 versus 396 9.8s would lead one to conclude that there may be something about that book that is different from the 396 9.8s.

  7. So, how long until we see another higher grade GL run like the Mound City auction?

When spunkydo puts his collection up for sale?

I wonder if he is planning on finishing up his run now that GL books are so $$$, especially the top census ones that he seems to be collecting.

If not, it's a good time now to cash in on huge profits?

  8. Does anyone have a link to that CL 9.0 sale? Or does the page no longer exist?

CL sets up their system so that the link no longer exists, except for the winner.

I can only see the result by looking at my bidding history on CL, but when I click on the auction link it's a dead link. CL clearly have no desire to provide the same kind of archival service that Heritage does.

    Gotcha...

  9. Below is the list of the new additions.

    1- 9.0 I beleive this the Detective27kid copy :o

Was this copy to be held in his private collection, or is the buyer most likely to flip it?

Sounds like a flipper (I really don't know) if he is willing to pay the premium for a raw 8.5 or 9.0. Rick probably has a better sense. (shrug)

one thing the GA crowd knows about me, that the SA crowd might not (well, except Nik, rest in peace, he knew) is that folks LOVE to buy my 8.0's and 8.5's raw.... I sold Nik several 8.0's and 8.5's and all came back 9.0 and 9.2 from cgc :foryou:

Rick, well done! Everyone's happy :):applause::cloud9::foryou:

Indeed, seems like a nice sale!

But why didn't you slab it yourself and put it in an auction?

Do you feel like the HA 9.0 sale still might not beat your sale price?

  10. My copy is just as nice...the four corners are a little bit better...why not a 9.0 (shrug)

Hard to focus on the corners when my eyes keep being pulled back to the miswrap.

This well explains why Showcase 22 does not exist in 9.2 or better; such as books like Brave and the Bold 28, Showcase 4, Flash 105, Green Lantern 1 SA. (tsk)

I don't think miswrap well explains why there are no > 9.0.

There are plenty of SA miswraps that I've been surprised to see 9.6 and 9.8.

  11. Have you noticed that the colors look totally different, when you compare the pictures?

The new scan has the bottom spine (near/around the bottom staple) looking a little more cream than the scan in 2006.

Hard to tell because the colorings are not matching between the scans, though.

    What do you guys think?

  12. :news: Well we will soon find out what a 9.0 will bring in auction. Heritage has posted a 9.0. No picture yet but here is the link.

Holy Jeepers Batman It is a SC22 in 9.0

Most likely it is the the one HA sold on 5-10-06.

    http://comics.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=820&Lot_No=2101&src=pr#Photo

Since it has off-white pages...it might just be. It will be interesting to see if it is still the old holder or the new holder. We should be able to find out if this is the new 9.0, the old Heritage copy or the ComicLInk copy with the updated census. Wow, we have the 8.0 Mound copy and the Heritage 9.0 up for sale. At least we know the Heritage sale will be in the GPA data. (thumbs u

Photo is up. Same copy as one sold 3 years ago.

Hopefully, the seller will make a little profit on it.

  13. why no mention of the real 9.0 in the heritage auction?

Three pages back. It did not generate much interest yet. I wonder if we will see some census creep. Are there some books in mylar that will be shook free and give us a 9.4 or 9.6.

The census should be updated any day now. Showcase 22 is difficult to locate in high grade (9.2 and above) is because of the black, green, and grey cover. I really thought my copy had a chance to be a 9.0, but just not quite there. Imagine if no copy ever surface above a 9.0...then holders of 6.0+ club will be well rewarded. On another note, If you look at the 6.0+ list in the club, very few copies exist with ow/white pages. There is a SC22 2.5 (the only other white pager) with white pages out there and I'm willing to pay $2500 for it. :takeit:

Isn`t unbelieavble that this book lay dormant all these years then WOW!

    That`s why I love collecting comics. :)

    Certainly possible.

Here is some census history after some digging. These are when high grade SC 22 copies were "discovered" and added to the census:

    2009 - 1 8.5, 1 8.0

    2008 - 1 7.5

    2007 - 1 7.5

    2006 - 1 9.0, 1 8.5

    2004-2006 - 2 8.0

    2001-2004 - 1 8.5, 1 8.0

    2001 - 1 9.0

  14. I am pretty sure I chronicled my search for about the last year or so, for a nice VF or better SC 22... I am, by my nature, a DC man, and when it came to SA keys, I was just more drawn to sc 22 than sc 4 (likely for affordability)...

in my search, I noticed a TON of fr to g/vg copies, but didn't see all that many vg or better copies for sale... so, as my personal search continued, I started picking up any nice vg or better copy (speculating, if you will)... and, well, that part of the story is fairly well chronicled here on the boards (I think I bought and subsequently sold about 14+ copies)...

what also has been alluded to, was that I finally was able to procure that VF copy I was after... I paid STRONG for it, but I felt it was a book that had no place to go but up and gosh darnit, I had been making offers on this copy for dern near a year (each offer higher than the last)...there always seems to be a point at which a "sale" will happen

I had the book pressed and was prepared to send to CGC... today, I sold it for a sum of money that, well, really boggles my mind...

it is no secret that any book I collect or own, I will make available (at the right price)... for me, collecting is as much about the hunt and pursuit, as the acquisition... I applaud those that can hang onto books forever, but when you spend the kind of money some do on certain books, well...you have to realize they are a tangible asset...

with this sale, I no longer am a member of the sc 22 club, but I hope to be again soon :wishluck:

    Congrats on the sale.

The buyer must really know his grading. It would be difficult for me to ever buy a book of such worth unslabbed for fear of it coming back a much lower grade than expected or even worse PLOD.

Did you attach any sort of "guarantee" to the book?

yes, I guaranteed it would grade at least 8.5 and be unrestored (thumbs u

    Solid!

How was the centering on the book if you can recall?
