  1. As a kid, MAD was the very first thing I started collecting. I think it's probably because they didn't sell any other comics at our corner grocery store, just magazines. The first one I bought off the rack was #182 and I was SOOOOO proud of it. I wouldn't let anyone touch it. I continued buying new issues for years and learned about back issues from my dad. As a gift, he bought me a VG copy of #34; it was the crown jewel of my collection.

On a family road-trip vacation, (ca 1978) we wandered into an antique store. He noticed a small pile of comics. In it was MAD #6. They wanted $40 for it. There was no way I could come up with that kind of $$ so I asked my dad if I could borrow the money. Instead, he bought it for himself. He didn't mean to be cruel, I'm sure, but it made me absolutely crazy. For years, I asked if I could have it. Once I got a job, I asked if I could buy it. Eventually, he gave in and let me buy it for the original $40 he paid, sometime around 1981, I think. In 1982, there was a massive flood and nearly everything I owned washed away, including, by that time, an awesome collection of 60's marvels and dc's.

About a year ago, I decided I wanted to get those old mads again. I've decided to start with 1-23 but the first thing I wanted to do was find a nice copy of the #6 that meant everything to me as a kid. It's been tricky to find a copy at a price I can manage, so I've started with this:

I'd love to find a higher grade copy but this is actually pretty close to my original one. I'll never let it go. :)

Great story. And a wonderful book :applause:

    :applause:

How did you get those sigs...that is awesome! I need to get some Viking sigs hm

    It's easy whenyou know how!

Go to training camp.... with a CAW.... storm the bus,,, push little kids out of the way... use words that would make Incognito blush, so adults step aside.... when you get to the front of the line.. try and stand next too a young good looking woman with a low cut shirt... and SMILE! :kidaround:

    Easy!

or you can just be really good at getting sigs :baiting:

I love this book for several reasons.

One, the only reason this book exists (IMNSHO) is to get signatures on it.

Two, I'm Fairly sure it is the only signatures series comic book with 2 current players from the Buffalo Bills on it :cloud9: Fred Jacson

Two.1 I think I was the first one to get a SS on one of these Pro sports books.. :headbang:

Three, I have followed the Bills for my whole cognitive life time

Four, the main reason this book received a 9.2 is because two of the graders must be Dolfin's fans....haters gotta hate :baiting:

    GO Bills.....

Another reason for the 9.2.... might be the fact that Football players have F'in ham-hocks for hands... NO need to spike it....

  4. Sounds like you communicated just fine.

Sorry it had to come here. But looks like everything will work out. (thumbs u

I did like how the buyer failed to mention that he was late paying....

No, something like could never impact a ship date.... RIGHT?

    doh!

I can't speak of the buyer's intentions but it does appear there was at least some confusion.

Nonetheless, kudos to you for clearing the air and handling this issue for him.

It speaks volumes about you and it's also good to know you're a boardie.

All that said, I still think you'd have done a bit better here on the boards with those 9.9s. Ebay can be a timing crapshoot sometimes...especially 'round con season.

Plus you would have saved the redunkulous Ebay vig....and have guaranteed that the slabs would have gone to a fellow boardie.

Anyway, good to see that it's all good.

Thanks you for the kind words,

I did actually try to sell these on the boards, with no luck...

and yeah the Ebay vig is bad and getting worse...

I try to be pragmatic when it comes to ebay auctions, some end low and others (that have no reason to) end at twice what I think they should... it all comes clean in the wash

I prefer a world where I blame Steve Paulus or, possibly, Rich Henn, for everything.

Good seeing you again at NYCC. I was so happy to have time to get beer with the guys for once. Look forward to running into you again soon!

    Ryan

I like to live in a world where Rich Henn is blamed for everything!!!!

    Global Warming

    unemployment

    War

    poverty

    expensive beer

    ugly woman

    all Rich's fault!!!

    I have proof! ;)

    Great seeing you again!

  7. you shouldn't have too big of a problem, buyer is KING at ebay.

He certainly won't have any trouble getting his $ back. But as far as getting the 9.9s for that heckuva good price, he may be S.O.L.

That said, the seller appears to be in good standing on Ebay from 2009. What's the likelihood he's going to want to tank his good rep. for some shoddy reason? Sellers also have an obligation via the new Ebay regs to put in some tracking info. within a timely period. Not saying there's not a first time for everything. Even at that price, that seller made a tidy profit...but if he was expecting to retire early off of those 9.9s he's probably a bit miffed.

Here's to hoping he/she/it comes through on their end of the transaction.

Based on how this buyer behaved I would have rather sold it to you for less!

    doh!

    Hi everyone,

I am that seller, and I wanted to clearify something....

The buyer took his sweet time in paying... 4 days after the auction and I was traveling at the time to the NYC Convention... I did contact the buyer while at the show, when I noticed a message from him asking why I did not ship one day after he paid....

I Politely informed him that because of his delay I would not be able to ship his books until I returned home...

I believe that this is a over reaction on his part, had he paid quickly I would have shipped prior to leaving for the con.

I have NEVER backed out of an auction and I doubt I ever will

I honestly would have shipped today but life got in the way... so to be fair... I'm a day later then I should have been...

Good deal. Although there is a part of me that is sick to my stomach for you. That was an awesome set that went way too low. I really would have bid had i thought there was any chance i could get it under $600. I thought it would possibly hit $1000
