  1. Hello, I have not posted on these boards in awhile, but I wanted to take a moment to appreciate that when the latest Clink auction ends, my favorite comic book will have a new owner. It's the one on the right. While it's the same grade and white page quality as the Twin Cities Pedigree, and neither one has been pressed, this particular copy is (slightly) brighter.

I will miss it. I tried to acquire one of the 9.4 copies of JIM 85 last year, too, but came up short. For now, all I can afford to pay is attention ;)

The work that you have done over years (even decades) to maintain and grow your comic collections astounds me, and while it's probably not said often enough, I hope you keep up the great work for future collectors and admirers.

    Michael

  2. While owning original Kirby art is above my means for the foreseeable future, I did manage to acquire the splash page and page 2 of the production art transparencies used in the production of the Marvel Masterworks (the original art was no longer in Marvel's possession by that time). I've had them archivally framed with two complete issues of Journey Into Mystery #108, along with my CGC graded copy. Turned out well, I think:

Took me months to save up to have this framed. Custom framing is expensive! Though Baas Framing Studio in Seattle did a nice job.

  3. With all of the enthusiasm over the Edward Sarley ASM's going up for auction, there are some nice Journey Into Mystery issues that I wish I could afford. My favorite Kirby cover with an interior Kirby signature (!) and white page quality:

Journey Into Mystery #108 white PQ, Kirby sig.

That would look nice framed, next to the production art I have. Ah well, my 9.0 copy will have to do. No telling where this would end up on the final day, but I'd wager north of $1600...

Then I start looking at the other 9.4s and 9.6s. Gorgeous!

Maybe the Sarley books will suck up all the oxygen (and cash) in the auction and leave some relative (and uncharacteristic) bargains in their wake. Probably not. I'll envy the new owners, certainly.

  4. Here are some photos of my best copies of Journey Into Mystery #85:

First, the COA that comes with the Twin Cities books:

It's hard to choose which one I like best. Sophie's Choice...

    Spine detail, non pedigree:

    IMG_0580.jpg

Both have white page quality hm I do enjoy owning a Twin Cities book. I feel an emotional connection to knowing something of the story of the original owner.

Two things you can tell: I'm sentimental, and a mediocre photographer...

  5. Ah, I see that Tsimanga's former copy was #0764441002, yours is #1032311002--I just noticed the last 4 digits the first time, my bad. That makes 3 of the 9.4 copies accounted for (the other one sold on pristinecomics' website...) looking closer, this one lacks the production crease that Tsimanga's has.

In any case, I'm jealous (worship)

  6. Paired with the 9.0 copy of JIM #83, that makes for a formidable duo. I haven't seen many high grade sales of JIM #83 this year, just a handful...

The Twin Cities 8.5 white pages copy for $28,860 in May, and the 9.0 ow/w copy on ComicLink for $52,102...the most recent mid-grade sale was a 7.5 white pages copy last month for $12,750.

Looking at those results, I need to diligently build a war chest for the future...

  7. Well, here's my SDCC pick up. I'm not one to search out sig series books but when I saw what sort of shape this book was in I couldn't resist. Might just be the nicest JIM #84 I will ever see, and I've been looking for years.

Some people who saw the book thought it had a shot at 9.2 on resub (didn't even cross my mind until they mentioned it).

I simply bought it cause it's one of those "snooze and you lose" books.

That's a keeper! OW/W page quality, even. Sigh. :cloud9: Mental note: Don't feel sorry for Roy.

  8. I have to admit that you just made me gasp. A 9.0 copy of JIM 84?!

People keeping score at home can tell you that the last time a copy in that condition changed hands publicly was on Heritage in 2002!

Was it one of the old label copies, or did one of the CGC resubmissions get bumped up? Pictures, man!

(Oh and btw, congratulations. I'm so jealous...)

I think you should keep them together for awhile at least. The Journey Into Mystery College Fund...

  9. Show them the 9.0 copy of JIM #83, Roy!

Meanwhile, only a day left in the current Clink auction, and my copies of JIM #83 are still below my cost. Is there a sweating smiley, or a nail biter smiley?

I know many of you are sick of hearing about Captain America, but did anyone else like the reference by the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving FTW) to the Cosmic Cube being from Odin's treasure vault?

Who knew that a gag placement of a version of Cap's shield in Iron Man would become this interlaced through line for all of the subsequent films?

I need to go watch Thor and Captain America again...

  10. JIM 83 to 125 done!

No uber-high grades in this run, but I completed my early Thor run of JIM 83-125 this past week with this guy. Complements my Thor run of issues 126 to 179.

    JIM86GD.jpg

Congrats! I also finished my run this weekend with my pickup of the Annual in 8.0.

Congrats to you both! Pat yourselves on the back.

  11. When I saw that copy of JIM #85 I was glad I wasn't drinking tea at the moment, as I would have likely spit it all over my laptop...Trimmed on all 3 sides, huh?

Once again, I have to applaud you for keeping copies like this out of bijoubaby's and robojo's hands.

Despite at least one report to eBay (cough), bijou's still marketing the 9.2 with color touch as a "Journey Into Mystery #85 Vol 1 Grade 9.6 No Reserve!"

:frustrated: Entreaties made to him to mail in the label to the CGC to maintain the accuracy of the census have fallen on deaf ears. Impossible! Sigh...

Anyway, happy thoughts. Those are some sweet books, y'all!

So who has a sweet copy of #86 for us to fawn over?

UPDATE: The restored 9.2 sold for $960 + $5.95 s/h on 6/23/11...Restoration removal candidate, there. I hope the label gets sent in...

Apparently, the winner of bijoubaby's auction for the "9.6" retouched copy of JIM 85 was, wait for it.....bijoubaby himself. He's re-listed it on eBay:

    Sigh.

Meanwhile, speaking of beautiful books in upcoming auctions, that 9.4 Twin Cities copy looks nice:

I will envy the new owner.

  12. Hey all!

I'm not a Journey Into Mystery collector (I collect HG FF) -- but I got this book in trade and wanted to post it as a rarity/fun book. A few Boardies have already seen it since I eventually plan to trade it for an FF or maybe put it up for auction somewhere, but for now I'm just enjoying the view. This book just screams "Silver Age Marvel" to me and is one of the most colorful covers of the era.

Thanks for checking it out -- and good luck in your JIM collecting! :cloud9:

    Dan

    (worship) ( :gossip: I'm thinking radar-wise that one's already in Korvac's set... :tonofbricks: )

I'm thinking that you should have a great shot at it, as an FF collector. Korvac does need to upgrade from his 8.5 copy, though

103's a tough book above 9.0. Not many to go around...A very nice book indeed!

    (worship)

  13. Dollhouse is a bit of a slow burn--really picks up in episode 6--and I really enjoyed both seasons. Joss Whedon's fantastic. Watch both seasons and prepare to have your expectations exceeded (less cliche than saying "your mind blown")

I wish Firefly had been broadcast in order!

Or that L & K had been picked up for series (had to bring it back on topic)...

  14. I find the Pre-Hero books just charming. Of course I would fall to my knees and (worship) in the Hero comics rooms, which I imagine would be full of other fun accoutrements such as:

    images-1.jpg

But there's something so engaging about the pre-hero stuff. When I see them, I'm like a little kid again.

Give yourself a pat on the back, pre-hero collectors!
