    TALES TO ASTONISH #75 Green River!
    Because of the ubiquitous date stamps on these books, it's possible to identify slabbed and raw books that lost their pedigree label or were never slabbed as a pedigree book from the collection.
    This copy of Tales to Astonish #75 is the latest addition to the worlds top Green River Collection. It was spotted on a dealers website and identified by the date stamp, (in faint red - just below the white box with the number 75) which was a dead ringer for the date stamps found on other Green River copies of the issue.     Not the highest rated set, but one of the more cohesive.
    This set of books presents 15 Green River 80-Page Giants all in one place. I'm wondering (besides collectors like Captain Tripps who rules with Pacific Coast pedigree sets), how many other registered sets contain as many books from one pedigree as this. If you have a set with ten or more books from one Gold or Silver Age pedigree... let's hear about it!
    As a bonus, I'm attaching a scan of my 16th Green River Giant...an unslabbed copy of 80-Page Giant #43 aka Batman #198. I purchased this from Jim Haack exactly five years ago. Haack, along with John Hauser, was one of the original pair of dealers who purchased the collection and named it, back in 1993.

    Yep, it's not only on Ebay!
    I was perusing various registry sets when I came across a raw scan of Daredevil #10 in another registry set. The member's sets seemed to be filled with scans that didn't match the books registered. Now, I've heard of Ebay scammers using scans stolen from other auctions or websites to sell books they didn't actually own, but this is the first case I'm aware of where a registry member is using scans that are not his. I think that's pretty lame.

    Yep, it's true.
    Below is a scan of my registry copy of Daredevil #10 before it was slabbed. The registry member to whom I refer has apparently loaded up his sets with loads of borrowed scans, as I recognized a couple of other scans he's using that he took from my website www.macartistry.com/greenriverpedigree which is a site devoted to the GR collection.
    I'm not going to mention the name of the other registry member because I want to give him a chance to clean up his scans. All I can say is...if you're going to put scans of books into your registry sets (and it does take some effort to scan and upload) at least USE YOUR OWN BOOKS! SHEESH!

    It's good to see a little activity here among the comic geeks... seems the coinees get all the action here in the registry. :-) Good to see a journal entry by Arcade (yes I read it, so call the cops if you want!).
    My GR collection is something I fell into about five years ago, and doesn't come close to Captain Tripps' monumental runs of the Pacific Coasts. CGCWorld's White Mountains are pretty awe inspiring too, as are Dr. Watson's growing collection of Northland X-Men books. Check those out too!
    Mark it up to an even higher level of OCD than most comic collectors have. It's fun. Green Rivers don't cost as much as many other silver age pedigrees. I couldn't afford a Curator run, that's for sure!
    If CGC will allow me, I'll post a scan here of an FF not in my registry, because it's graded by the company whose name must not be spoken. I'd certainly prefer if it was in a CGC slab, and perhaps at some point I'll go to the bother of reslabbing it. And I highly recommend you avoid the unnamed company for anything other than modern slabbing. They're untrustworthy. But for now....

    Hmmmmm....
    Well, that's a good question Crazy, but I don't think "obscure" is the right term. Both are pretty well known among serious Silver Age collectors.
    I think that it would be fair to say that the White Mountain pedigree is vastly more wide ranging and of generally higher quality than the GR pedigree. I've seen more examples of early Marvels from the White Mountain collection than from the Green River collection.
    What's nice is that both collections carry markers on them including date stamps and hand written dates (WM only), and are probably a little more protected from manipulation, pressing and resubbing for higher grades. It's easier to track both collections, although there isn't a White Mountain database online... yet.
    Oh, if you made a list of the top Silver Age pedigree collections, I think White Mountain would make it into the top five, Green River would make it into the top ten list.

    Going Green!

    "I think more emphasis should be paid to "interesting" collections and not just those accumulated by mere financial brute force.
    With all the attention paid towards "Going Green" this year, whether it be hybrid cars, solar houses or small carbon footprint living, I think it's time for CGC to recognize oddball registry sets and collectors that have taken the hard road and tried to pull together collections that can't be built just by pulling out a credit card. The registry has plenty of BSD collections, without scans, that just aren't that interesting to look through. What's the big deal about a list of numbers? I say, get imaginative and stop using registry point totals as a measure of a collections uniqueness and intrinsic value. #1 registry sets, especially those owned by dealers, are a yawn. Come on, amigos. Come on Scott and Harshen and Mark. Get with the program and give some recognition to those low point total collections that aren't just accumulations of big number pressed books! Make the Registry Awards Interesting Again!

    BTW... I had no idea this would end up on the CGC Chatboards. I was as surprised as you guys! If they want to cut me off from posting on the CGC Boards that's fine. But that has nothing to do with having registry sets.

    Clarification.
    The addition of the picture of Nik to the Cap n' Mandi package was my tribute to him. The drawing of Cap (which I originally did btw) was removed and filled with black as a symbol of the loss of a good friend.
    I knew Nik. Visited with him at his garage. I miss him too.
    End of story. Thanks to all the folks who wish me back. All is well on my end and I post semi-regularly on www.comiccollecting.org.

    Now in its eight year of operation ...
    Now in it's eighth year, the most comprehensive site on an individual pedigree collection begins its new update with the addition of new books to the Tales of Suspense Gallery. All the other galleries will receive updates this summer.
