I once played in the pit in marching band. Sophomore year, and we were doing a "Scheherazade" suite (Rimsky-Korsakov)...(I think, it's been 30 years)...I was the drum major (conductor), but during the percussion solo, I had convinced the band director that I could play the glock (the metal keyboard instrument on the far left in the video) and so I got down off the podium and did. My first, last, and only time as a percussionist.
I was ok with one pair of mallets, and that's all that was needed, but I don't think I could have ever gotten the hang of doubles. Those guys are fierce.
