If I remember correctly Archer St. John died in the apartment of his mistress (of a heart attack?). I'm not sure anyone can shed much light on their relationship given how private Matt was mixed with how St. John really had him control the art and layouts. My feeling is Matt was busy and dedicated and St. John knew the quality of the images even if he neglected the quality of the printing. Sales were enough to keep the lights on and keep Archer galavanting.

18 in 9.8 is certainly a lot. How many of those are direct and how many are newsstand is less clear. The tough variant of this issue is the 35 cent variant, where there are 0 in 9.8 and 19 total graded copies.

Red Hulk 2?

There is no way I could afford the price to submit any books as low as $75. My bar is currently around $1,000...even then most sit years before being hand-picked for submission

Very difficult last issue to find in high grade unlike #1 of which there is near endless supply.  Although in the last ~16 months the 9.8 population has grown from 9 to 14 and its no longer the least populous issue of the title in that grade.

Early direct variant too
