  1. A friend was helping out one of his friends sell his small collection (long box and as half) and asked me if I was interested. I was told there a very low grade Tales of Suspense 57 and some of the books had water damage. He wanted $500. I thought it would be fun and not much risk to buy it sight unseen and see if I could get $500 out of it. Here is what I'm working with, looks very grim: Well, here is the first batch that I pulled out and graded: Darkhawk 17 7.0 07/1992 Our Army at War 275 2.0 12/1974 Secret Six 3 2.0 08/1968 Battleforce 2 4.0 02/1988 Aion 11 8.5 09/1983 Warhammer Monthly 8 7.0 10/1998 Dragon Lines 1 9.4 05/1993 Frankenstein 6 2.0 10/1973 The Nazz 1 8.0 10/1990 Feud 2 7.0 08/1993 Livingstone Mountain 2 6.5 08/1991 Captain Savage 10 1.5 01/1969 Captain Savage 15 1.5 07/1969 Our Army at War 270 2.0 12/1974 Conan 29 2.0 08/1973 Conan 30 3.0 09/1973 Conan 32 2.5 11/1973 Conan 33 1.5 12/1973 Conan Annual 4 4.0 01/1978 Conan 160 6.5 07/1984 Conan 157 4.0 04/1984 Conan 162 4.0 09/1984 Incredible Hulk 224 2.0 06/1978 Untamed 1 8.0 06/1993 Marvel Super Action 1 7.5 05/1977 Our Army at War 276 2.0 01/1975 Defenders 10 2.0 11/1973 DC 100 Page Super Spectacular 21 2.0 10/1973 Star Spangled War Stories 117 2.0 11/1964 Star Spangled War Stories 133 2.0 11/1964 Special Marvel Edition 7 2.0 11/1972 Amazing Adventures 23 2.0 03/1974 Marvel Spotlight 9 2.0 04/1973 Marvel Spotlight 8 2.0 02/1973 Combat (Dell) 32 2.0 01/1971 Marvel Spotlight 10 2.0 06/1973 Green Lantern 115 5.0 04/1979 Daredevil 137 2.0 09/1976 Daredevil 118 2.0 02/1975 Daredevil 108 2.0 03/1974 Daredevil 107 2.0 01/1974 Daredevil 103 2.0 09/1973 Daredevil 106 2.0 12/1973 Saga of Crystar 3 8.0 09/1983 Spook 27 4.0 01/1954 Doom Patrol 50 9.4 12/1991 Doom Patrol 40 8.0 01/1991 Doom Patrol 24 9.4 08/1989 Thor 252 2.0 10/1976 Thor 281 3.0 03/1975 So yeah, the first book I pulled out was Darkhawk. How funny is that? It got better with the next two books being from the 60s/70s at least. Unfortunately, everything is in bad shape and pretty much worthless. Then, sitting between Saga of Crystar 3 and Doom Patrol 50 (seriously) was a pretty nice 50s horror book, Spook 27! Woah. That should cover the cost right there. Question for those of you that buy collections all the time, is this kind of collection odd? Comics from the 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s, DC/Marvel/ mix? Barely bagged with no boards. Seems crazy to me. Anyway, I'll post more tomorrow.
  2. That's awesome!! Oh man, I would have sold you that book, but it was one of the few that was actually sold back then.
  3. Notice how I didn't include a phone number in the ad. I didn't want those 4:00 am calls, but probably not the best for business.
  4. I'm remembering more now. I think the only thing people really bought were Spider-Man and X-Men. I must have sold 7-8 copies of ASM 300. I had to scour shops for that one also (I only had 2 or 3). I'd buy them for $30 and sell them for $38.
  5. Yeah I used to do the same with Motor City Comics' ad. I'd call within minutes of getting it in the mail and 75% was already gone.
  6. It's funny. You could have - just this week I sold those same exact FF 52s on the boards here. Not a shabby grader for back then either. The VF or VF- graded as CGC 7.5 or 7.0. The VG was either CGC 5.5 or 5.0 (R).
  7. Yep, that was lucky. Can't believe it's been 30 years since I placed this. Ugh.
  8. Back in 1991, I bought a full page ad in the Overstreet Price Update to test to see if I could make some extra money selling my duplicate comics: First off, the chances of making back the $400 cost of the was a major stretch. Second, I didn't/don't have the temperament for sales. Not that I can't sell, but I just give away to much stuff. I was so happy that people placed orders, I would include a free comic with their order. And what I was giving away was nice copies of Amazing Adventures #1. And if someone ordered a second time, they'd get issue #2, and so on. One guy got up to Amazing Adventures #6. The most popular purchase was Amazing Spider-Man #238. I had a couple, but ran out. So I spent my time driving to every Bay Area comic shop cleaning them out of NM copies. Sorry if you live here and tried to find a copy, it was my fault. Luckily, no one bought the FF 52s, Marvel Premiere #1s, Marvel Spotlight #2, Tomb of Dracula #10, of Marvel Super Heroes books. Overall, I remember having a lot of fun, but selling through the mail back then was difficult and nowhere near profitable enough to continue (at least for me)..
