  1. It's not my ID, but that's how I have it indexed. I got the ID from Steve at the link below. I'd certainly agree it's more polished or shiny may be the better word than most images I have from Dodd in my files: https://www.flickr.com/photos/56781833@N06/52800854395
  2. Or (not my scan) but from a recent release at the pulpscans group from a very prolific and talented fellow pulp scanner: Cavalcade v02n06 [1959-09] splash My Rap is Treason Howell Dodd Here's the original art (which I must have downloaded from HA)
  3. Smash Detective Cases 1950-03&04 v03n04.Publishers Productions cover Howell Dodd My copy, a very nice specimen.
  4. This is like waving a red flag in front of a bull I've found a lot of my grails in True Crime. I looked for this one for a long time. Crime 1953-03 v06n03.Best Detective cover Howell Dodd Crime 1953-03 v06n03.Best Detective cover Howell Dodd (Darwin edit)
  5. I've got a small gallery of Gross covers I've worked on at here at Flickr. I likely have some others I've done that I'll add and others in the future as well. Showgirls was a Your Guide publication, and Gross did a lot of true crime covers for that line, so Magazine Publishers in the indicia in that Illicit Honemoon must be adjacent to that outfit (Arthur Bernhard/Morris Lantzen?) somehow.
  6. Yep, I follow both those guys. Micksidge has the added and fun rockabilly content on his thread which sort of goes with the paperback stuff in a strange way (dude's an Aussie? seems to have interesting UK/AU material). Day Keene is a favorite among scanners and members of the old yahoo now io pulpscans group. I've very rarely read a story or novel that I didn't enjoy, and this one is especially intriguing because of the pulp/magazine milieu (the other I think of off the top of my head with an industry setting is Kenneth Fearing's The Big Clock), so I'll be checking it out.
  7. Hello! I thought I'd hop in with some paperbacks. Do excuse if I'm repeating already posted books. I've never really been a paperback collector, but I've picked a stackful over the years. Since joining Flickr - Darwination, I've really come to appreciate a lot of the art of the paperback era because of some of the posters who specialize in them. I'm not a condition-hound so bear with my grubby books George Gross, 1948 and 1951 The cover for Illicit Honeymon is also featured on the second issue of Showgirls in 1947. Maybe, somebody can educate me a little. When I see a cover used twice on a magazine and paperback, do I assume a link between publishers? Or since they are non-competitive would a paperback publisher buy a "used" painting from the artist? I've got a pretty good idea about who published Showgirls. Illicit Honeymoon lists Magazine Village, Inc. as publisher.
  8. I pulled this one out to get a scan of the cover. I've got it on display on my bookshelves for a bit. Adventure 1925-09-30 cover G.C. Delano A few have managed to stay up for a long time, but I like to keep it fresh. A lot of times it'll just be a new acquisition I like or something I've scanned recently or have up for auction.
  9. Youthful Love 01 1950-05 cover Walter Johnson I tried to grab a few from the box at hand that were maybe scarcer, but this one isn't quite as scarce as I thought. Hideous. Wonderfully hideous
  10. Buy my pulps, and you can be the first to put them in a box!
  11. All sorts of neat pulps in the the quickly approaching (and suddenly announced?) auction from the collection from "The Dentist." I think the bound editions of Robert Harrison's (with his name embossed on the covers) are particularly neat. Still, I'm not so sure I'd like all that pinup getting lost to the spine...
  12. Peace and love to all underbidders, whoop whoop
  13. Right after I've staked out that Baker art lacking a woman is not as interesting, here's a piece that is! Well, close, anyways
  14. I've got that last one but not in as nice of shape. Seems like I've seen it fetch tidy wins in at least a couple of auctions this year.
  15. This beauty is leaving my possession today. I think I was attracted to the luridness of some of these St. John issues (TEEN-AGE TEMPTATIONS???) even before I caught the Baker bug. I prefer Baker in a slightly different vein these days but do like this one. The poor girls do so get put through the ringer in goldenage romance....
  16. I'm interested in picking a copy up as much to have v01n01 as for the Baker art (well, almost) but am a patient man. eBay killing the adult only section has made finding/listing such harmless publications more difficult :/
  17. Somebody got what I consider a great deal on a super nice copy of a Timely true crime mag from me last night on eBay with some early Kirby art. I suppose this isn't the sort of thing to list in open auction but more like a Buy it Now - Complete Detective Cases v02n06 (1940-11.Postal)
  18. Nice ID, Doc, there's no way I'd hit that one. I'm honestly not very familiar with Baily. And I can't disagree with your assessment of the art in issue #5, but when it comes to the goldenage, some bad art is still good art if you know what I mean. It looks like the GCD has the issue pegged as almost completely Eugene Hughes with some pencils by Sal Finocchiaro (neither of whom am I familiar with). A couple of pages I like Full scan for those that want a better look here: https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/ij9n7emh9ang2dl/Ideal_Romance_005_%281954-08.Key%29_%28LoveJones-DREGS%29.cbr/file A 2009 scan, but it still looks O.K. I might take a different approach a couple places on the cover these days, but I'm happy enough with that, too.
  19. A couple more moonlight covers. Another Kinstler, I wish I had a better copy, for real Realistic Romances 016 (1954-06.Avon) cover Everett Raymond Kinstler Water stains, creasing, waviness, and pencil marks can't stop me tho - Really a favorite, what a scene. A redhead in black silk, a convertible by the sea under the blowing palms? I even love the strange dotted line around the moon. or Vince Colletta, underappreciated by all except perhaps us romance fans, My Own Romance 40 1954-10.Atlas
  20. Ha, somebody knew how to list it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/186055287987?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338825302 Now, there's gonna be 10 Matt Baker fans trying to add it to their collection. Including me
  21. It's amazing they still put the 2007 Bookery's as a guide, Many books will go for ten times the estimate. My take? Right now everybody is trying to corner the market on the highest grade Spicy and Saucy titles to have the best one in the box when CGC gets at it. And on that subject there is only one true Spicy - the original - Spicy Stories. Just pretty girls, no torture LMAO (even if Spicy Detective/Adventure/Mystery did have some great artists) My copies, all Enoch Bolles
  22. Thank you. I've had quite a bit of practice. And those who don't know me from the digital museums or other online hotspots might check out my blog which covers a wide variety of comics, pulps, magazines and other printed materials (new post just yesterday): http://darwinscans.blogspot.com/ The Coles are a real treat, and I'll keep at it, but you might say I have a lot of irons in the fire these days. At Flickr, I give the image source in the placard. This one was worked from this image/issue at MCS, really a great starting point as far as condition: https://d1466nnw0ex81e.cloudfront.net/n_ii/originalimage/6561128.jpg With Cole, I'm usually working from Heritage or MyComicShop images, but I do have some issues in my collection (though I'm selling some on eBay over the next couple weeks) and much prefer to work from a high dpi scan even if that means starting with a grubbier issue.
  23. As long as I'm spilling the beans - Manhunt (Flying Eagle is the company in the indicias on the digest) (Baker up through some point in the first year), Verdict (will attach a pic from that one - the Chandler issues are the ones I need but won't pay for), and Gunsmoke. I'm also told Baker art shows up in Nugget (also St. John). I looked through the second issue of Nugget and didn't notice but have some other issues in my boxes, thanks to the member that pointed out the possibility. It's really an exceptional mag - hope it's not against the rules to point to a scan of mine for the second issue: https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/eomtaf8b2oa2zbp/Nugget_v01n02_%281956-02.Nugget%29_%28darwination-dpp%29.cbr/file Baker also worked in a number of Everett Arnold's sweat titles (those you'll have to research for yourself, as I still have ones I'm looking for), and I suspect you can find some of his art in the Goodman western pulps or magazines as well. The sweats used to be dirt cheap, as in - here's a stack of 10 for ten bucks. It's not quite that way anymore. MANY golden age artists carried on in the sweats (aka men's adventure magazines). Some of those are great reading btw, apart from any artistic merits (especially early on). I'm attaching a couple more Baker sweat splashes I've worked. Of course, Baker art just isn't the same if there's no girls involved...
