My buddy, Minh (TheEnabler here) is in, also.

Whole bunch of old-timers crawling out of the woodwork here ...
(OG member of the comicinvestor.com boards, too ... That was a magical week. )
-
and I was interested in the Disneys (they were subscription copies bent in half and still bound in the original brown band).
(Yeah, yeah, I know it's not a War Book ... shoot me.)
Why so many Salidas buried in a Silver Age forum thread? I get the impression you guys are hiding from me!
Nobody luvs me!
On a serious note ... how much of the original Salida list do you think we could reconstruct just with the books that have been posted in various threads here on the boards? Not to mention the "hidden" books that everyone is too chicken to show!

Wow! Sweet copy! Was there a Church copy of #13, to your knowledge? What about any other pedigree copies?
There is a Church copy of #13, which is around vf condition.
Odd ... the original Church catalog has NA #13 listed as a "VG."
Then again, the #14 is graded as a "Fine," which would make the copy you posted one of the nicest "fine"s on the face of the planet!

Salidas never turn up. heh heh heh
You sure know how to make them "disappear".
Fer cryin' out loud, I've been harrassing Aman enough via PM lately ... do I have to resume sending him Salida questions now?
Why'd you stop?
He's like you ... won't sell 'em to me!

Does Ellsworth still have a lot of the Salidas? Is he still even in the biz?
I've heard conflicting reports on how much Bruce kept of the Salida find. The prevailing thought is that it wasn't much .... That being said, however, about five years ago a lot of 42 Salida war books popped up on eBay via an Arizona comic book store. The provenance statement I got with the ten I cherry picked from it when the auction failed to meet reserve implied that the books came from Bruce himself. It could have just been a poorly written statement, though. Someone else here may have additional insight.
As for Bruce himself ... when I talked with Stephen Ritter at the Motor City Con, he said he believed that Ellsworth was currently out of the country and probably wasn't doing much dealing nowadays.
Too much information, so little time to collect it ....

Or should I just start PMing you, "Adam?"

Still no Salidas yet, Shep?
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find one eventually .... And then you'll sell it to me after I make you an offer you won't be able to refuse!

Summer plans:
1) get bigfiver's address
2) quit job
3) steal bigfivers books
4) hello guadalajara
3.5) Sell any Salidas in the collection to me.

Funny how these things end up in walls. Lowenville collection was that way as well.
Methinks Tim needs to stop speed posting and actually read what he writes from now on.
Lowenville? That's worse than nearmint and his "O'Reilly" designation.
Also, the above post implies that the Loweville collection was used as insulation. It was not; the books simply slipped behind a custom magazine rack into a wall cavity.

It was purchased by noted collector Jack Mallette, from a collector/dealer who had advertised it in the classifieds of Alan Light's The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom (now called CBG), sometime in the mid-1970's. Mallette sold it to Gary Colabuono in 1992 for the sum of $15,000.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I miss this one. The actual deal with Jack was for $12,000 cash and 3 pages from Justice League # 1.
Sellers remorse hit the second the auction closed. I know who owns it too. Really nice fellow. It'll be locked away forever...
i don't exactly follow. i gather the following timeline:
Advertisement 1970s --> Jack Mallette ownership --> Gary Colabuono ownership 1992 --> 2002 Mastronet Auction
was Gary the person who had seller's remorse? did u own the book at some point?
Moondog == Gary Colabuono

An odd little addition to the Green River collection...... this book was on ebay, unidentified, but with Rob React's help (he as another copy of the book, a CGC 9.2 with a date stamp that matches up to this one), I was able to ID it as having come from the Spokane WA. drugstore where the GR collection originated.
ZeMan once asked if books that hadn't been gathered together (actually, stolen by the store owners sons) and sold as part of the pedigree collection (ie, a book that might have been sold directly from the store) would be considered part of the pedigree collection. My instinct is to say sure, why not.
If Shin is out there.....I would assume this is not one of the copies sold to Hauser & Haack.......it might have been sold by Craig Barnett in the mid 90's, but because of it's less than stellar condition.....(maybe a 3.0, 3.5?), I'd say it just could be one of the books that sold directly from the store in the 60's. And those of course, would carry the same date stamps that the more pristine copies do.
Since Kenny(Zeman) first raised the queston, about a year ago.....I am designating this the KennyCopy of the Green River Pedigree DD10's. And thanks again, to Rob.
Hokey smokes, Redhook! What a tremendously cool find! Have you asked the eBay seller where they got it from?
Stuart D. (nochips) told me about some collection of books out of Nevada (?) that was original owner but had Mile High-like markings on them. The belief was these books were part of the same distribution network that fed Denver while old Edgar was buying his hoard. (Or something like that ... somebody get Stuart over here to clarify!)
What an odd, odd hobby comic collecting is ....

The colors on this copy are so bright I need to wear sunscreen.
Gorgeous book, Andy!
That canary yellow really shows through on the scan. That has to be gorgeous in person. eBay purchase or do I need to quit my job so I can follow you around to comic book stores in the area all day?

It's interesting you guys are having this discussion about Bethlehems. I just received four Bethlehem comics in the mail today from Keith Contarino. All four have date stamps on the front, and all lack the telltale Bethlehem stamp on the back cover that most of my older Bethlehems have. One comic has a date stamp with no letter prefix. One has an "E" in front of the date stamp; one has a "C", and the fourth has a "D." Pretty odd. I have no idea what it means, but I have no doubt these are Bethlehems.

Let's see 'em, Joe!

I don't expect CGC to determine a pedigree, if the submitter doesn't supply any information. Yes, if they see what they believe to be a Edgar Church/Larson or other top pedigree book (that has very distiquishing marks), I could see them going out of their way to determine if it's a pedigree. But surely not for Green River or Bethlehem (unless the Bethlehem book had the store stamp on the back).
But aren't the date stamps just as unique as any store stamp? Sure, they're not as obvious at first glance, but once you see enough of them you start to get a feel for what's what. I'm sure Brad can pick out a GR by the date stamp alone, Tom clearly knows what he's looking for with Bethlehems, and I can pick a Salida out by smell (the date stamps on them just make it easier ). CGC has certainly seen a lot more of these books (Salidas excluded) than the aforementioned gents, so why should we give them a pass in identifying pedigrees? Especially when they have a guy on staff whose business card reads "Pedigree Expert."
Unidentified pedigrees with no markings whatsoever, of course, are a whole other case, but even those can be identified (or ruled out) with a bit of investigation. After all, someone from CGC called Jeff (nearmint) up thinking a book with no distinguished markings he had submitted was an Edgar Church copy ....
Ultimately, I don't see what's so hard about these pedigree checks given CGC's resources.
Just my two cents....

CGC blows another one!
Good pick-up on your part, Tom! And good eyes, also!

Won this on Ebay last night. I'm 99% sure it's a Bethlehem book.
Interesting. I'd never seen a date stamp like that on any Bethlehems before, so I checked Heritage's archive. The only CGCed Bethlehems there with a "D-prefixed" stamp are some "Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds" and a "Forbidden Worlds."
The cream to off-white pages are a good indicator ....
I'm curious if there are any dust shadows on the back ... if so, I'd agree with you 100%, Tom. If not ... like I said, it's interesting.

I'm about a half tic from going burninator on several members as well.
If you are going to be the burninator, the correct term is "mans," not "members."
Come on, fhqwhgads. I see you jockin' me.

Sorry Alan, I was in a rush. I should have said "the well recognized Church pedigree and the less well-known Salida pedigree which has been officially recognized as such by CGC but the status of which is still a source of much controversy within the comic collecting hobby due to the generally unexceptional structural quality and limited number of books in the collection, notwithstanding the touching story behind the collection and the exceptional gloss and page quality of the books".
Thanks, Tim. First laugh I've had from these boards in I don't know how long.
Of course, if you were to recognize that the pedigrees which encompass early silver age books, such as White Mountain, Pacific Coast and Western Penn, are legitimate pedigrees, then I might be willing to reverse the above qualification above.I'll give ya Bethlehem (even with their "unexceptional structural quality") and maybe Curator because the story around it is so unique ... and if hard-pressed for another might even be persuaded to throw in Green River, again, for the story and because I like Brad more than you ().
But WM, PC, and WP?

Colorado, where the Church and Salida pedigrees came from, ain't such bad places to visit either.
Way to represent, Tim!
I knew my pimpin' of the pedigree would pay off!
...
Uh oh, I gotta go answer some nasty PMs from Greggy now ....
