  1. I spent a bit of time reading through this over my morning coffee today.

Good points to know as a new(ish) collector of Art in regards to scams, but also a great push for me to sign up for a premium account. I'm glad there is a community of people to talk to about these situations, nice to know people are keeping an eye out for sketchy people and letting the group at large know about it.

Happy you both got your money back eventually.

  2. Wow those are great! Brings back a lot of childhood memories for me growing up in the Boston area. I met Ben during an in store when I was around 15, my mom drove me in a snowstorm to meet him :D

I sold my SE 1 and 2 years ago, long story but annoying relationship of course, but I've been hunting in the wild for them for a while now.

I should snap photos of my #8 without the front logo and my original omnibus signed by everyone....still kept those :cloud9:

  3. It was entertaining. I couldn't believe what some stuff was going for. A lot of the lesser name artist's pieces were selling for multiples of their commission rates! Did you see that big FF painting? That thing was amazing.

    I

I got a little crazy at Shelton's art auction at Heroes. This Bagley Hulk DPS was the result.

I enjoyed the auction as well. No purchases this year but I was watching the action closely on this one. Congrats!

Yep, really weird auction experience this year. This is only my 4th auction but it had a totally different feel than any of the previous I had attended. Even walking around the floor on Fri/Sat, the conversation about big ticket items was conspicuously absent. I hope the days of Hughes and Brooks putting up their pieces (that have been signature pieces of auctions past) are not gone. No Noto, No David Williams and not a lot of other big names in the auction (Wrightson, Neal Adams, etc. have been in multiple auctions) this year either. I was surprised at a few items that went high (the FN187 was crazy) but overall I thought the auction skewed more toward the prices going lower across the board than normal. The FF piece was insane as I doubt anyone saw it going for $7K and being the high water mark for the night (I didn’t stay so I am not sure this is true). We were sitting right next to the guy who won it and the buzz on the floor was that he was formerly from the Charlotte area and had moved to Hawaii so he had an emotional attachment to the piece (and add in that the bidding war was between him and the guy who bought the FN187 piece) – the guys hand was shaking every time he raised up his bidding paddle. The artist struck gold when he decided to do a piece with the Charlotte downtown buildings (I heard his piece went for 200 last year). I hope it isn’t the start of a trend as I would love to see AH and Brooks back (I also sat really close to the guy who paid $15K for the Brooks piece last year). I’d love to see Allison running the auction and the smoking jacket crew scurrying around. The room was missing a certain buzz this year – hoping they can start to recapture it going forward.

The guy up front was buying a lot of stuff, great for the fundraising for the con but I was thankful he left before the last few things I was interested in were on the block.

First auction and heroes for me, but I had a lot of fun. Most of the art wasn't my thing, but I definitely picked up a few deals. I can try to post a few photos sometime this weekend.

Why did that Stormtrooper painting with the blood go that high? Did I miss something there? It's cool they raised that much money with it, but I didn't understand it going over $1k the way it did...

  4. I have read through this thread quite a few times over the past few days.

It's really a great discussion and celebration of Frazetta, thanks to everyone who has shared info and anecdotes...and to those folks who own the beautiful books posted in this thread (worship)

  5. Ok, so I'm not exactly sure how to go about this one because I honestly have bought a ton of stuff from him in the past and I don't like publicly calling people out but it's at the annoying point now and my messages are going unread.

I bought a FF #60 from Kramerica back in July. Paid July 16.

There has been back and forth this summer about it, mostly when I asked if it had been sent and making sure it didn't go missing in the mail or something like that.

October 21 I received a response that the book would be going out in a few days.

Sent another message on 11/28 and another 12/5 and both are unread.

I looked up the paypal transaction and he's now an unverified user which really kind of bums me out.

If anyone yaps with him offline, can someone tell him to check his messages or something like that?

Not trying to be a jerk at all, he's a great member with a billion posts, I'd just like my comic or a refund at this point.

Unfortunately, Mark has a history of delayed shipping but has always followed through that I know of. I don't know him personally or have any communication.

I assume he gets his PMs via email but he may not. Try to send him an email to the PP email you used to pay him if you haven't already done that. Others here may have some other way to contact him.

    Good luck.

Thanks! Yeah Mark has always been great, and I'm ok with waiting if I'm getting responses but when I've been ignored for a month I start to wonder. I'd feel bad if he has been having some hard times, we have all gone through stuff, but a quick "I have it and I'll get to it" message is fine for me.

I'll drop him another note via email.

  7. I know I left feedback this morning for a new transaction, but I wanted to pass along that two books I bought from Patrick late last year that were graded by him at 9.0 and 9.2 came back as a 9.4 and a 9.6 respectively.

Grading skills are top notch! (thumbs u

  9. Every year for the past three years during February (or so), my wife and I have taken our daughter and her best friend (whose birthdays are only a few weeks apart) to the Tysons Corner Mall (just north of Washington, DC in VA) for a daytrip/shopping spree.

Back in the '90s, I regularly attended shows in northern Virginia. This year, I decided that I'd had enough of sitting on benches outside of stores favored by teenage girls, and, on a whim, went on-line before we left this morning to see if there were still any comics shows in the area, and, maybe, if there was one scheduled for today.

Turns out there was! -- a small show, but very cool.

In the end, I spent more than I should have, but it was a great way to pass the time, and I managed to take home these cool goodies in the process:

    • Been looking for a 9.2 or better copy of Cap 199 for a while now. This one is closer to a 9.0, but the date stamp sold me, as it always does:

    • What can I say? I'm a sucker for this book in any grade...

    heroforhire1.jpg

    • A vintage TPB of classic early Wrightson reprints, in glorious b&w, from 1978 -- what's not to love?

    wrightsonbackformore.jpg

I also grabbed a copy of the Marvel/DC "Wizard of Oz" treasury from 1975 -- it seems weird now, I know, but that whole inter-company/competitor cooperation thing was a very big deal back then. Surprised it only took me nearly 40 years (as a Marvel fan & collector) to pick one up!

The moral of this boring story?

If you're heading towards a major urban area with kids on a weekend, and the activity planned for the day has nothing to do with you (other than as the chauffeur), always Google ahead for a regional show -- you might get lucky! It also beats the drunk driving rap if you wind up at a bar all day instead... :insane:

Great scores! April 6 date stamp :cloud9:

I've been hunting one myself, birthday and all, I actually hadn't seen one yet so it's great to know they're out there :)

  10. After combing through this thread in awe at some of the posts, and because it's been a bit quiet in here lately, figured I'd toss in my favorite cover and my highest graded copy in my collection.

(apologies for the glare, I get in fights with my scanner and the iPhone had to do for today)
