Ugh. I'm sure my dad had a lot of those kinds of books from the 50's back then. Sadly his mom threw em away
Well that stinks.... The Tagalog Komics with a K are actually quite beloved on the islands. Its the bookstore editions that harbor a sort of lack of respect all the way to ill-will. I have met some Filipinos who love their local output of American stuff but many see no use for them if they can acquire the American original... hence the rarity.
I beg to disagree. About 3 months ago i literally asked for 4 free komiks from the '80s (2 k's; see my sig line) from some people who found them in the garbage. A few days later found a few more from their ilk, but this time paid about $0.50 for the 4 copies (all 8 came from the same batch).
Even komiks from the '90s are hard to find by now. Funny thing is, I largely ignored them when they were widely available. When the publishers went belly up, that was the only time I pursued them.
Both comics and komiks got little, if any, respect because they are considered by most people to be disposable entertainment.

I never bothered knowing before. Marvel did introduce 2 unremarkable villains.
Betty & Veronica seems more appropriate, considering my real name is Arthur. Plus they get their title relaunched this month.
Neal Adams did maybe 10 covers for DC that month!
15 cent cover price? I feel so old
PS I don't own any of them. In fact, I don't have any from my birth month.

the thing that pops out to me looking at the ad and the numbering is that they are using the last two digits as a year reference and the numbers before that to indicate the issue of their reprint series. so you should have a 171 through 1071 as seen in the ad somewhat.
I think they kept using those sequential numbers moving forward based on other issues I saw with similar markings but replaced the 71 with a 72 --- as you will see a 4672 and so on.
I just found the thread through the other thread and was instantly fascinated by it. I had to read the whole thing though before offering this response since it happened several pages (and years) before and I wanted to be sure no one else had already made that connection of the numbering.
Haven't visited this forum in a while.
Not sure how many Goodwills I have (very few to be sure) but I get the impression that the last 2 digits, in this case 72, either represents the original publication year or the year they were reprinted in the Philippines. The numbers before those---they're quite a mystery to me. If I had more Goodwills, I probably can see a pattern.
I didn't bother rereading everything. I was assuming someone already made the connection.

I only have Hulk 140. When I found it a few years back, I thought it was odd for a 40 year old comic to be in NM. I knew it had to be a latter print.
The SA and BA are easy enough to identify but is there an easy way to identify these variants for the modern books? The Spidey on the UPC is it fool-proof? I don't recall if DS Marvel 1st prints ever used this version of Spidey on the UPC.

Attack the Casino's Vulnerable Games --John Gallehon
Got it real cheap. About 20 cents. Taking me forever to finish it. It hasn't convinced me to visit the casino...yet. One chapter to go...

Thundercats 1.
It's been like 10 years since I bought my copies but I believe they were 3rd prints. Got to check. So diappointed they weren't first prints. Got them real cheap though.
-
That was from a board game called Buckaroo...looks like it is missing some pieces.
Thanks for the info! The real reason it caught my eye was that I thought it was Bullseye of Toy Story! Based on the Amazon page, there is a Bullseye version of it!
-
I got this real cheap. About $0.90. About 10 inch high. Says 2003 Hasbro. Any idea what this is?
These were part of local fast food Jollibee's Justice League 2003 set. All missing the lasso. Plus 7 of the 8 had rusty screws on the back of the head. But for less than $2 for the lot, who am I to complain?

Not Filipino...from Singapore
Didn't you notice that there's a new "official foreign bronze thread?"
Seeing non-superhero comics do make these threads more interesting.

Skynet, I seem to recall you saying that your Star Wars 1 had handwriting. I got my copy from a flea market last October with handwriting on the back cover. I did see a Blodie and a Beetle Bailey but after finding gold, I left behind the consolation prizes. By any chance...
ah no that's not my handwriting
It would've been too much of a coincidence. That only happens in movies...and comics.

I was just reading this thread I came across a kid colt 205 with no price recently and just found out it is a national bookstore variant. Any idea from the more knowledgable here what the rarity of it is. Thanks, I will get some Picts and post them tonight.
Posted the same issue in this thread last month. These are rare but there isn't a big market for them. Define999 seems to want to get them all though. ::
And wttb!

197 pages is too much to read...
I know someone shares my passion for Game and Watch! I'd love to show off some of mine but my photobucket acccount has become screwy and its contents, while they have not vanished, have become inaccessible.

Uh...is the shadow included in the auction?

Alternate Worlds: The Illustrated History of Science Fiction by James Gunn
Not a big fan of sci-fi but someone lent it me so might as well take advantage of it.

Those are really very cool, where can I find some?
These local prints are very hard to find. The super heroes were printed circa 1980-81. Harveys probably a few years prior.
Finding collectors from that era is nearly an impossible task, antique/ used book shops are your best bet but since most shop owners are aware of the collectibility of these sometimes they'd ask for an arm or a leg. I asked a fellow collector who was an exhibitor at a recent toy convention and he implied the same.
I sometimes find them cheap at flea markets but being out of print for over 30 years, it happens very rarely.
You could always ask Define999 and LSComics if they'd sell you any.
Dekada_collectibles (Philippine-based) of ebay always has some for sale.
That's the reason I proudly display my finds here even if they're pretty beat-up.
Define and LSC, I found some G.I. Joe (Atlas, circa 1995) and Archies (Alemars), would these be an easy sell? I know I collected Archies before but...

LSC, Batman 236 was printed by Goodwill, much tougher to find than National prints. I'd have a harder time to let this go than HOS 107. I added the inside front cover which shows the 1973 calendar so this was most likely printed the year before. Plus it is my first Goodwill ever...

Someone posted this yesterday on one of the Facebook groups I'm a member of.
I asked a few questions like which bookstore published this and if these came out the same time as Nationals. I was told that this was by Alemar's and these reprints were published later than Nationals.
With those answers, I've learned A LOT of things. Someone please react as I feel as if I'm talking to myself.
