  1. Around 1994 I had gotten to know one of my LCS owners and was able to see some of the books he did not have for sale in the shop. I picked out a beautiful NM Nick Fury #1 for probably around $40-50. Back then it blew my mind to see a book from 1968 look this new. The white parts of the cover were so white, the inside paper was so white and it smelled as good as a new book!

I don't even remember to whom I sold it or for how much. I sold it during a period where I had stopped collecting and was selling off for cash. I really miss that book now.

  2. Just ran across this one today (yes, it's borderline Copper Age). The proportions of the characters remind me of Liefeld's work.

That is a horrifyingly bad iron man

That's one heavy Iron Man suit. No wonder Tony Stark needs Thor's hammer to prop him up.

    Colonoscopy, super-hero style... :roflmao:

I'm not sure if Scarlet Witch or Iron Man's standing pose is more feminine

  3. It's not a modern book, but close enough. I waited for 6 years for CGC to finally grade a 9.8 of this book, and by the time they did, I think the first copy sold for like $3K. I got this one instead, and now I can rest. :)

Always loved this cover and that's just a beautiful copy, perfect wrap. Congrats!

  4. To everyone screaming "who wants a preview comic?" the Ms Marvel story that appears in ANMN "Garden State of Mind" is an original story that you can't get anywhere else.

It's actually collected along with Ms. Marvel Issues #1-5 in the first Trade Paperback.

As a digital comic also but talking single issues.

I am fine with it and agree its first full. preview or not... CM #17 2nd has merit as well and is KEY. pre-dates the point one. The 4 books all have merit ! I just don't like it when someone is putting down an apparent Key instead of recognizing it !

I've only seen a couple put down CM 17 2nd print and it is silly to put down any book but I've seen way more take a dump on ANMN. Maybe because of how much they spent on it maybe because how much they want to sell it for but they do not sound like fans of the character. Either way all 4 have merit and personal favorite is Ms Marvel #1

I have CM 17 2nd print, ANMN 1 and Ms. Marvel 1. I'm a fan of the character and I read the series digitally. I think she's got a bright future in Marvel's plans... she's already an Inhuman and now an Avenger. I think it will be fun to see how she handles being an Avenger while in school and avoiding being perma-grounded by her parents. I think CM 17 2nd print is the book to own and what I have seen is folks knocking it down as they hype ANMN 1 as the new hotness.

  6. What's with Hulk 180/181 analogy? Wolverine is in the story on both books, albeit more prominent on 181, and they are surely not a reprint.

I did not say CM 17 2nd should be less valuable. All I'm saying is CM 17 2nd now has narrowed down group of speculators / "collectors" willing to go after a copy - the ones with deep pockets. If a young collector (future of this hobby) is looking for Kamala Khan's 1st App, would he/she go for ANMN at an affordable price or CM 17 2nd at a premium? It will be more than likely that he'll go for the more practical option. He/she may go after CM 17 2nd but it will be low on the priority list - the young collector probably thought that it is smarter to put that money towards a SA key by Kirby than pay a premium for a reprint with a nice cover drawn by Alphona. Who knows (shrug)

So if the stand alone story in ANMN is a "preview" for Kamala, DC Comics Presents 27 should also be a preview for NTT?

The modern "young collector" mostly buys trades and digital anyway. I've seen them post their collections on reddit and other places it's shelves of trades and omnibuses (omnibi?). It's hard to imagine a more serious young collector foregoing the book of their favorite character in favor of a nice Forever People. And when I was a young collector I wanted THE book, the desirable one. I don't think either has narrowed its appeal to a specific "collector," it's the speculator/collector that is determining the future appreciation of all these books, as it always is. The "sensible" young person was probably going to trade-wait anyway.

  7. I've got copies of both books and they both have things working for and against them I suppose. Preview-type books can be hit or miss and the other is only a cover appearance on a 2nd printing. Had the Captain Marvel cover been by any other artist than Alphona, who was the first artist (designer?) for the series, it might not have caught on like it did. But being a legit variant, feature cover, first costume, showing powers really helps a lot. It's not a bicep or woman on the street who kinda looks like Kamala? At the end of the day, the CGC designation "Ms Marvel (Kamala Khan) cover. Pre-dates Ms. Marvel #1 (4/14)" is not too shabby either.

  8. I think the really low print run, Adrian Alphona cover and being out earlier by one month give Captain Marvel 17, 2nd print the edge. All-New Marvel Now Point One #1 has a near 33k print run and the Captain Marvel didn't make the top 300 for its sales month. I think all the value is derived from that print run for a well-received new character who seems to figure prominently in Marvel's future.

  9. Do any of you guys know if/when the "Spider-Gwenom" cover is supposed to drop, and/or what the cover art might be? It will look sick as a companion piece to the ASM 678 VenoMJ. :cloud9:

I don't like her face in it. Looks like she's got Green Goblin face.

  10. Received my one copy that was ordered on April 9th. No complaints here, the book arrived with no damage. Looks at least a 9.6 to me, I can't see any flaws. Packed in a cardboard sandwich wrapped in paper, within the Diamond mailer. I was pleasantly surprised overall.

  11. i don't think Ms Marvel needs tv talk to be popular.

I agree with this. She's a pretty cool character and her book's a fun read. She will be front and center in the new Avengers book. I see steady increase in fandom like Deadpool and Harley Quinn have experienced before and apart from any movie or tv hype.

I agree with the earlier sentiment about resistance to preview books as first appearances. They experience price increase but never seem to be THE book. Meanwhile the low print 2nd print Captain Marvel #17, in addition to coming out earlier, has the Alphona cover going for it, which is high profile especially in a post-slab collecting world.

DP and HQ are in some rarefied air.

That's true, I guess that was a pretty optimistic comparison. With Deadpool you got the internet popularity with the memes and Harley has years of Batman the Animated Series fans to draw from. I think it's more that Ms. Marvel has a nice chance to develop fandom and popularity more organically and not so much speculator driven by movie or tv hype. The book is well received and Marvel seems to have her in their plans for consistent push and exposure.
