I haven't read the books for that series but here is my guess.  #1 was her cover appearance.  #8 was where she officially became Thor.  I'm comparing it to Shuri as Black Panther. She appears on the cover of #1 in 2009 and doesn't officially become Black Panther until issue #5.

That's a great comparison thanks! I guess since both characters Thor & Black Panther just changed who's at the mantle, a note is only given once the identity is revealed. In Hulk Vol. 1, #1, we didn't know the identity of Rulk but it still got the "1st appearance of Red Hulk". I guess Rulk as a character is different enough that they felt in that instance it's worthy of a note.

  2. I've noticed a note is put for when Jane Foster is revealed to be Thor on slabs of Thor #8, but why isn't there a note for the first appearance of Jane Foster as Thor in Thor #1 2014? Was it because her powers were identical to that of Thor? Because Rulk and Red She Hulk got their first appearance notes, but I guess it's because they were different enough?

I see this from time to time. Next time a book with damage from storage comes across my desk I will post scans.

The recommendation also came from Eric (who no longer works at CGC), I would like to see it come from someone higher up like Paul or Matt.

From a business perspective, I don't think it would behoove anyone from CGC to ever say, a comic while in a slab could be damaged further in a vertical position - regardless of age, etc..

How do you know these are UV protecting?   It does not say anything about that on the product page link provided.    Thanks!

Ah, never mind.  I see there is a drop down for UV protection that is an extra $20.  So $50 total for some plastic... ouch!!!   I would only do this if displaying my $1K+ books, but I don't like having those sit out to avoid theft (though I do have a house alarm, thieves can get through a house pretty quickly before police arrive).  I've got all the expensive stuff in a non-fireproof safe bolted to the floor.

No doubt it's pricey but yes, definitely for the books you love and want to display in your home I think you will find they're worth it. It's really fantastic in person.

I checked out the site they do display cases for giant size comics as well I am sure that would handle the different size cases as well as cases for toys, cards and custom size cases, pretty cool site.

    Thanks for the Link

I think this should get a bump

No problem and thanks. Just ensure if you are buying a case for anything other then a new CGC slabs for modern comics, that you ask customer support to provide a link for the right case. You don't want to spend money and wait a couple weeks for a custom case that doesn't fit your slab.

  6. So finally the acrylic case came in with UV protection and this thing is simply amazing. It comes in two parts, the base, and then the case that actually holds the slab. The case that holds the slab has a sliding door on the bottom. Everything connects together via tension only.

Now the case that holds the slab is made perfectly to hold the slab in a way the slab doesn't move at all, so you can't for example fit a slab that's bagged into the case, there would be no room at all.

The picture I provided really doesn't do it justice, the whole ensemble looks amazing in person. Yes it's a bit pricey, but IMO definitely worth the investment for those  who display their most loved books.

  7. As promised I received my order from ClearBags, and well they look exactly the same as the ones on eBay lol. The only real difference is the height of the flap and the height of where the main body ends. Everything else including the width, the material, and the adhesive are exactly the same to my eyes. From the picts the one in the back is from eBay, and the one on top is the one from ClearBags. It is possible that the eBay members at the time they made their purchase just happened to have bought a slightly different cut, but they are pretty identical and I must say it's pretty convincing they probably bought from ClearBags as well.

I still owe you guys a review on the acrylic stand, it's on the way.

  8. I've bought mycomicshop before and their packaging for CGC slabs is the best I've ever come across. They double box, use filling paper, and the Lshape foam corners.

Now as for their raws I've never purchased b/c they give pretty ambiguous grading, for example it goes from NM to VF, however others have posted some of their NMs are 9.8 candidates so perhaps there is a good possibility that the NM described raws are good to buy.

It all depends on preference and amount of edge damage already present, I guess...kinda subjective, lol

Like a 4.0 or 5.0 with a good amount of edge wear already there probably can't get much worse in a slab on its own, you know?

Oh yeah, but I guess from a higher grade book, like for example your golden/silver age 9.0+ books, do you feel pretty secure about those older books in a CGC slab?

  10. 1 minute ago, Mystafo said:

It's not usually a problem if the comic is encapsulated in the ideal manner and/or the comic isn't very fragile.  But that unfortunately is not always the case and I have had (and still have a couple) vf- and higher graded books that I was afraid to store upright because the book would move ever so slightly in there and sit right up against the vertical bottom wall of a well-type inner sleeve if you let it.  I've even cracked a few out and put the in mylar for fear of this (and SCS + weak staples).

For CGC, at what grade point range would you say that's not so much of a worry?

  11. 14 hours ago, Mystafo said:

This may have been mentioned already, but I actually vary the way I put slabs in a box.  If I'm absolutely sure there is no movement of the book within the inner holder and I'm not too worried about the value or condition I stand them up.  If the book has a good solid spine and I'm more concerned about movement or dings/dents on the edges from the walls of the inner well, I lay them on edge with the spine side down.  Any old and fragile books where I feel the spine may be weak I lay horizontally flat (with the bc facing the ground).  Nothing like going back to look at a book you stood up normally only to find that over time it has slowly migrated to the bottom of the slab and incurred some damage on the bottom edge!

This is one of the reasons I don't want to get a golden or silver age comic - I'd want to display it all the time and the fear of gravity damaging the bottom edge and\or spine would drive me nuts!

Of course they are going to say their product is a tenth of a millimeter thicker. Of course they are going to state their product is Mylar when it is not. How else are they going to dupe people into paying Mylar prices for Poly products?

This has already been proven. When AngelClaudio gets his bags from Clearbags, he'll be able to tell by comparing the two.

Thanks for you faith in me! lol

    Just look at the difference!

CGC-Mylars on eBay is charing $17.56 for 20 bags.

The distributor (Clearbags) is selling a pack of 100 bags for $8.10

    Exact...same...bags.

So I just finished ordering from the Clear Bags site for the sake of proof for this thread total + shipping was:

    8 15/16" x 14 1/4" + Flap, Crystal Clear Bags® (100 Pieces) [B814] + econcomy shipping = $22.54

Now I paid a little less than half for about 15 bags, let's see if they're identical - if so I may take them up on that refund..

Many thanks for the tips!  I just bought 3 of the BCW boxes with inserts.

I'm wondering if I am using the wrong storage bags?  Someone sent me a CGC book early in my collecting and it had these "mylar-like" and very clear sealable covers.  They claim to be "archival quality" but who knows?  Anyway, I do like the seal and the books look great in them.   But should I be concerned for any reason?

They are listed on eBay as (100) CGC BAGS CRYSTAL CLEAR 1.6 MIL RESEALABLE DISPLAY BAG SLEEVES for $29.  They were listed for "or Best Offer" so I offered up $26 and he accepted.  Seemed like a decent deal as long as they are safe for CGC comics.

So one last thought on all this craziness about caring for the collectables.   Over the past year, I have bought about 50 graded Signature Series books, many signed in 2012-2013.    The books are all in perfect shape.   I cannot believe that for the past 6-7 years these have had the same TLC that I am going to give them (humidity control; sealed bags).   It makes me think that the books are reasonably well protected by the slabs or wouldn't some of these 6-7 year old books start to show some issues?

Hi BladeTx, those bags are fine they are just not as firm as Mylars - but that shouldn't be a concern since they are already in slabs, you probably just want to protect the slabs from scratches, dust, light stuff.

I believe the slabs should be re-holdered after about a decade, mostly to replace the inserts behind the cover pages.
