  1. Once upon a time, Lev Gleason hired Carl Hubbell to try to create an Archie knock-off. I don’t know if anything of the sort got published, but here is what survives.
  2. You raise a VERY important point….now, I like that Cardy cover well enough, but…. @Straw-Man make sure it’s a very well-sealed slab because you do not wanna see inside that book!
  3. Ya gotta get a reader with the MOKF too. Priceless meeting!
  4. I think most reasons offered already are valid explanations, especially the widened social media landscape. I think of a lot of buying and selling action has moved to platforms that are less discussion-oriented. That said, I’d rather buy and sell here because as a buyer I see better stuff pass through here. One has to be patient, but if you’re looking for the stuff that rarely escapes black hole collections, this is the place to wait it out. As a seller, I like the high rate of seamless interactions (Which I like as a buyer too). But more specifically to Roy’s original point about the Friday night hangouts masquerading as sales threads (I’ve hosted a few over the years) a few elements have to come together. The right seller has to have the right stuff on a night when a critical mass of both the right buyers and right thread krappers are present. There is a delicate balance when one of those threads takes life, between the “I just wanna see the good stuff” crowd and the crowd who is here to shop, talk about the material, and have laughs at once. if eyeballs have moved elsewhere, it’s harder for all those elements to coalesce.
  5. Oh geez this sucks. I only “knew” him through his posts, but we lost a great, active fun boardie. RIP Sean. Rafe, thanks for letting us know and condolences to the family. Didn’t they buy a new house within the last couple years? I think there was a recent (local) move.
  6. I’d vote for 123 as the start of the Thing as a co-star.
  7. His premium pricing model is not new. He was higher than other mail-order houses in the early 80’s when he was taking those Marvel centerfold ads. My MHC experience then was I sent some books in trade, then I placed an order for a few seemingly well-priced outliers, usually low-grade early silver, and got maybe one book and a “Trade Credit Memo” that expires in six months. Then you try to pick something else…lather, rinse, repeat….I still have the expired trade credits somewhere…. I was done with Mile High Comics by 1980 or so.
  8. Completely agree with you; up to 150 felt similar. I just meant one could pick 143 as the shortest stopping point that defines the complete first era of new X-Men. 144-150 isn’t out of place either though, if you lump it in there. They mostly lost my interest after 150 too, but I also recognize we are probably in the minority there. And MTU (and MTIO) are cheap classic bronze fun, pretty consistently from end to end. (I’m sure we could pick nits and find a clunker or two in there, but what long run doesn’t have a miss here and there?)
  9. Absolutely; I’d count 94-143 as a complete set! I should clarify: I think you can make a legit argument that it’s a “complete” vol. 1 in the sense of it’s the complete first iteration of the new X-Men; the Claremont/Cockrum kickoff and the complete Claremont/Byrne effort. It’s the foundation (including GSX1 too, of course).
  10. NFS, it I mentioned it earlier in the thread so I ought to display it in this thread — Joe Sinnott’s file copy of My Own Romance #71
  11. All takers have been PM’ed! Any last-minute requests on the five remaining books (recap above) I’m all ears. Thanks everyone!
  12. Just got in…let’s go 20% off what’s left, until I get around to closing a little later.
  13. Ok, 5 books left -- here's the recap, with posted prices -- take 15% off these prices: Page 1 -- Love Romances #51 GD $50 Love Romances #55 VG- $100 (If that Colletta splash were the cover, this book would be four figures in this grade and sold already) Page 2 -- Lovers #84 VG $100 Page 3 -- Love Confessions #28 VG $35 Love Romances #83 GVG to VG- Joe Sinnott's personal copy; signed inside by Joe. (Also contains 2 Matt Baker stories) $100
  14. Love Tales #64 & 71, Love Romances 53, Lovers 69 & 71, Sweethearts 28 and Young Love 104! Thank you Royce!
  15. Don’t shoot me, but …. MOKF #19 It ain’t zactly a key, but it’s sure absurd!
  16. Love Tales 64 & 71, Love Romances 53, Lovers 69&71, Sweethearts 28 and Young Love 104 are on holding pending PM exchange.
  17. That is now everything for this thread. We’ll give it a full day before closing, then I’ll get PM’s out to takers. Thanks everyone and I hope it has been enjoyable!
  18. While I have a few Joe Sinnott file copies from his Atlas work, most are other genres. I only have two romance books, the one offered above, and My Own Romance #71, which far exceeds the top census copy and will be staying with me.
  19. Ok, this last one’s sort of a rerun, but it was lost in a Mixed thread, I suspect…. Love Romances #83 GVG to VG- Joe Sinnott's file copy, signed by him on the margin of the 1st page of his story. Jack Kirby cover, 2 Matt Baker stories (1st and last stories in book). (While many of Joe’s Atlas era file copies were comps from the newsstand at the NYC Atlas office, a few that he missed on his trips in to the office were later acquired as back issues. As this is lower grade than the other Atlas books I have from Joe’s files, I believe this was acquired as a back issue. But Joe endeavored to keep a copy of everything he did, and he signed the best copy of each of his keepers on the margin of the first page of each story he did in a book. What this means for Joe Sinnott file copies 1) some books have multiple signatures by Joe in them, such as Devil Dog Dugan. 2) Joe was allowed up to three comp copies of books he worked on in the Atlas era, but prior to his passing, he and his sons with help from a trusted longtime dealer friend kept aside the best copy of each, which Joe signed in this manner, then they sold off the unsigned undercopies. Since Joe’s passing, they have begun to disburse Joe’s signed keepers, and I have had the opportunity to acquire some.) $100
  20. SOLD via PM! Blonde Phantom #21, an incomplete remaindered copy. The book is missing the last four pages (two leaf’s) because someone ripped out the Sub-Mariner story. As a result, the second and third leafs are loose but in there. The cover is detached at the top staple. Buuut….both Blonde Phantom stories are complete, and it’s a tough, late Timely hero book, with only 17 on census. $50
