Then your statement here from your first email is confusing, whereby you stated that you didn't swear at him...

"So I did respond to him and told him about why I couldn't pay and so on (He did go on saying the e-mails were rude and disrespectful with some swears, True, but I didn't swear at him, I was saying how hard it was to do this and trying to be committed and they way he e-mailed me I thought I was being disrespected because of the stuff I'm going through, and I was still trying to pay),"

I did mean to add I it’s true I did swear, but not attacking him, This is the email he was talking about with the swear words.

I asked Spencer about this thread and he agreed with many of the posters to just let this thread die as it is not worth the stress fighting over.  However, he did want to clarify one specific point, which is that at no time did he ever swear at the OP, and in fact, it was the OP who swore at Spencer multiple times in multiple emails.

I never said he sweared at me and I said I did that, I mentioned it in one of my posts and I only sweared twice in one email, not multiple

I'm beginning to see why you are in financial problems.  I'm also getting tired of people using autism as an excuse.

Actually no that’s not the case I’m in financial problems, and how is it an excuse when it’s true, sometimes they’re things I don’t understand fully

I've really looked at this situation pretty closely, and nothing is to be gained by dwelling on what appears to be an accident. If I thought you were being unfairly treated, I would say so. Just move on.

Agreed, I’m pretty much going on with my life and move on, I’d like to thank everyone who posted cause it helped me understand this type of business a bit better! Is there a way to lock the thread? Cause I feel like it’s time to, nothing really more can be said

edit: spoke to the mod about it, so we’ll just let the thread die off.

Then for Spencer, maybe this was an exercise in "lesson learned."

I still don't understand the actual timing of events in the OP. First, he wrote: "I was wondering if anyone had any dealings with Spencer Beck? I didn't really have a good outcome, I e-mailed him in September about a question about George Perez' commissions, ..."

Then, it looked like the work was done on 9/23. Then, it looks like the OP had his nasty exchange with Spencer several months later. So, if Spencer didn't have reason to think there was a problem until after September, why would he add this in September? Just wondering.

There was a few exchanges made a few months before the heated exchange (January and December) (I thought I added that?) September was when I messaged general query questions, I received the invoice around the 23rd and didn’t respond because I didn’t think of it at the time because I thought that was for me and thought he would message me back about it on when I’ll pay for George to start, though he did 3 weeks later but said the piece was finished.

Good thing it wasn't a $15k commish for a Lake Como Jim Lee. They would of put a lien on your house and took a kidney.

True lol, I also have to say thanks to everyone who posted as these posts have helped me understand more and alerted more on the business,

From CAF, and note the requirement of payment up front, which raises a whole 'nother question of whether the OP has a good reason to be disturbed:

Each commission will be limited to one single character per drawing,
usually drawn with Copic markers with added pencil tones on 9 x 12 Bristol
board. . I prefer using the pencil tones because detailed ink work is a bit eye
wearying right now, especially with my vision treatments still ongoing. No
backgrounds will be added unless I choose to add something minimal subject
to my own judgement on the composition.
The price is $700.00 plus shipping, which I know is not cheap, but I will
try to make it worth the cost.
Payment in full would be required before the commission will be started.
However, it will be held in escrow so if at any time you wish a full refund
( and your piece has not yet been started ) the money can be refunded to
you within 1 business day. Depending on the number of orders, it may take a
substantial amount of time and there is no guarantee that I will be able to
    draw every request I receive.

To be honest, this is the first time I'm seeing this, I didn't check on the CAF site, just checked online talking about the commissions and contact info, in which I asked pretty general query, but with my style of writing might've meant something else.

FWIW, I have purchased a number of lower priced pieces and higher priced splashes/covers from Spencer, in person and over email, and never had any issues.

The commission business can be tough on all three sides (artist, artist rep and collector).  And communication is KEY.  As we all know, there are a lot of unhappy/unfortunate stories, for a variety of reasons. And with George Perez any normal issues are magnified given his health issues and that he only has time for a limited number of commissions each year etc..

I'm also sorry the OP is having severe financial issues.  That must really be rough.**

BUT . . . even if there was some miscommunication in the early email exchange (and I have to give the slight benefit of the doubt there to Spencer based on OP's writing style here but even moreso that OP sent Spencer a sample of what he was looking for - usually a sign you are moving forward)---once OP received an invoice, at that moment the responsibility would have shifted to OP to clear up the issue and put a stop to it.

When you get a bill in the mail for something you didn't order, you don't stick it in a drawer--you contact the sender and say "I didn't order this" or here "Sorry Spencer for the miscommunication but I wasn't ready to move forward.  I hope George hasn't started on the commission, etc. . . ."   I pulled up an old invoice from Spencer I had handy in an email and it had real invoice type language and did not look ambiguous.  It had language about the total amount due, plus shipping options and charges, what payment is acceptable, where to send payment, etc. etc.

I also agree with several prior comments that I don't see what is accomplished by this thread (except as a caveat or lesson for others which could have been communicated without naming Spencer).

    My 2 cents.

**unfortunately one also cannot help think why someone who is that close to potentially having financial issues would be looking to order a $700 commission.

True, I thought the invoice it was for me when I was able to pay because that's how I thought things worked, I'm still a bit new at this , And I also asked about the commission before I had financial problems and was hoping to pay soon, though my job doesn’t pay well so it would be a while to pay, I didn’t think to say anything about canceling because of that reason, around the time the piece was finished ( a few weeks after) was when my financial problems came about, also I’m slightly autistic so it’s a bit difficult to understand a few things and also why my writing style is a bit confusing. Yea, the reason I posted this was because as a lesson for others who have problems like this as well.

I’m sorry about your financial situation.

With all due respect, my suspicion is that your writing lacked clarity that you were making a general inquiry. I draw this from the way you wrote your OP. It wanders.

Spencer may be a little at fault, too. He is a pretty busy guy, and maybe he read it too quickly.

So, without more information, I would chalk this up to an unfortunate accident. Sh*t happens.

Yes true, my writing tends to lack clarification due to the fact I'm very fast at writing lol

It is easier now than at any point in human history to communicate with others.  I need an irony font...sigh.

But seriously, genuinely and truly hope your situation improves.  HOWEVER...maybe instead of posting stuff like this about how he does business, go attend your own.  You had infinite opportunities to address it with him personally.  Instead...a public forum? Makes it seem a little personal and not business at all actually.  I get an invoice, I generally pay them or find out why I'm being sent a bill, which invoice is a synonym for.  I understand the 'but's' and 'well I thought's' and all, but refer to first post. Just communicate and issues hardly ever arise.  Best of luck.

And yes, a go ahead final communication should be had between both parties.

That’s the thing, I did speak to him about it, he hasn’t responded to me at all after, I was hoping to work it out, I was a bit rude by to him a little because I thought the way he emailed me was a bit uncalled for (I understand he’s representing George Perez and I haven’t paid) and also he threaten to blacklist me, So I told him what was going on, why I couldn’t pay, and was  a bit rudely because I was a bit mad about something that happened yesterday, I apologize and never got a response from him back after he responded.

I don't see any issue with an inquiry about commissions. I do it all the time (today even) as it is part of the fact finding that you have to do in order to prioritize your art buying purchases.

IF the art was done based on a price inquiry, then I don't totally fault the OP. IF it was more than an inquiry and Spencer was given the go, then the OP should pay up.

That’s pretty much it, I don’t ever recall giving a go to Spencer, I did ask about inquiries but I never gave an indication to buying it, though I did say I wanted something specific as just an example but I guess he took it as a go, then three weeks later he told me it was done and I had to pay up. And then I said I’d in like a few weeks but broke that promise because that was the beginning of the money problems, And then again cause everything was a bit better and hoping to surprise that I got it and pay him, I was should’ve said something but didn’t.

  11. Hey! I'm new here!

I was wondering if anyone had any dealings with Spencer Beck? I didn't really have a good outcome, I e-mailed him in September about a question about George Perez' commissions, I wasn't planning to buy anything but I did send an example to him of what I wanted but just as a general query which was 700 in total, then I got an invoice from him but I didn't think of anything, I thought that had to be filled out once I got the money together and he would give it to Perez, not the other way around, which is what happened (and later Beck told me that is unacceptable, despite the fact many art dealers and artists I've dealt with did that), So not trying to disappoint or say anything which would cause drama and I didn't want to start drama, I said I would be able to get 700 to him, unfortunately since then (six months), I've been having many problems with bills and my home, my house is on the verge of being foreclosed, So I tried to hold the commission off and tried to keep promises I couldn't keep because something came up and didn't give updates because I thought it would be fine once I paid, when I did, and also I don't want to tell anyone about my personal problems, I don't really care now anymore,  So anyway I got a message from him telling me how I was being unfair to him and Mr. Perez and threaten to blackmail me from his artist because of this mess, It was never my idea to being disrespectful but who would want to disappoint someone, I wasn't going to say I can't pay it after he sent the invoice,  So I did respond to him and told him about why I couldn't pay and so on (He did go on saying the e-mails were rude and disrespectful with some swears, True, but I didn't swear at him, I was saying how hard it was to do this and trying to be committed and they way he e-mailed me I thought I was being disrespected because of the stuff I'm going through, and I was still trying to pay), So then he went on saying:

"You received an invoice on 09/23/17 ... if you did not want it or could not afford it, you should have said something then. Not waited until you got an email three weeks later saying it was completed." I couldn't because he didn't say I had to pay or anything and I thought that was for when I was ready for pay and Perez would start, not the other way around, he really wasn't specific and when I told him And I didn't expect him to go ahead when I didn't think I ordered anything, So I messaged him back, apologized, got nothing back, so that's my story.

Has anyone else gone through this with this guy as well?
