The GA "Short Bus" Thread Post your unpopular books!
selegue replied to shiverbones's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
They're sure not similar in condition to mine! Very nice. I remember now that the small front cover scan I posted was the seller's scan of my copy. I don't know much about these books. They're not listed in Overstreet, at least the outdated one I have nearby. Does anyone know how many there were and what years they were published? I should dig mine out of storage to see whether it's 50% or more comics to qualify for inclusion in the GCD. Jack -

*SNIF* The thread is dying. But if all of you clap your hands real hard and post your unloved comic books to show that you do believe in stinkers, maybe it won’t die. Here's First Class Male from the Harry 'A' Chesler shop. I can't find a date on it, but obviously WWII era. WWII cartoons and letters, approx 5"x7" format. I don't remember whether that's a scan of my own copy's front cover, but I know that's my back cover. Is it unloved? I bought it for $1 in glorious BTH condition. Jack -

A barber shop for all those hirsute amphibians and birds. Bizarre. Not quite as odd as the "Ugly Chicken" cover of #29 that you just re-posted on the holiday thread. Jack -

Wow, I'd like it as well. You're definitely out of your ELEMENT in this thread. everyone is saying that but i am only getting 20 to 40 dollar offers. thats what i mean, it's a ga #1 war book. no respect i tell you. IMO $40 offer is a passionate love affair. Under $5 is sitting at home Saturday night without a date. Jack -

I think so. My purchases were 1958-60 books from several publishers: Archie, Gliberton, Pines, Seaboard, Harvey, etc. There were some Rudolphs. Jack -

And that picture is over 5 years old -- I don't keep many pix of myself on my computer. The resemblance is getting closer. Of course the students get a laugh out of it. Jack -
Just checked it out... nice one. (could only get the general idea of it, as its a Gerber postage stamp-sized photo!) (sorry to get off topic, but a "women in tubes" thread would be nice to see...) Probably someone has a better scan than this of the all-time classic WIT cover. Jack

Am I supposed to think, "Three Stooges"? Look at the eye-poke on the left. Jack "Pick two" That is kind of a fun book Jon. I like the Evel Knievel suits!

This is an cool series, this issue of course being of particular interest to me because of my science in comics fetish. I actually paid *CHOKE* over $12 for a fine copy of this one, although later found out that it's one of the common in the series and picked up duplicates. One of them has the similar splatters of distributor's ink. I wonder whether they just got tossed back in the truck and trundled back to the warehouse because no self-respecting kid would waste a quarter on this instead of a Marvel monster book, a Superman and a candy bar. Maybe there's another reason why I like it. Jack (on the left) -

I have a VERY vivid memory of reading Jacky's Diary when I was a kid. I've been looking for a copy of it for years, and not just because I dream of assembling a whole Four Color run. I should actually hunt for it instead of hoping to stumble upon a copy. The book is based on a short-lived syndicated strip by Jack Mendelsohn, in case that's not obvious. (The strip didn't have the apostrophe!) I think the Dell comic was original stories, not reprints. Mendelsohn drew the strip in an intentionally childish style. It was full of everyday observations filtered though the mind of a child, resulting in lots of odd puns and wordplay. I still say "Cup Scouts", but I remembered it as a Walt Kelly pun. Maybe it was both. Chip Monk Petrol. HAW! I couldn't have been much older than the eponymous Jacky when I read it, and I remember to this day puzzling over some of the jokes until they sunk in. One, in particular, in a strip about Jacky at summer camp. "Oliver Sudden, one of the boys at camp, Fatso Henry, started screaming and yelling..." I couldn't figure out who Oliver was. (Sound it out.) I'd love to see a reprint volume of the strip. Another comic book turned away from the Isle of Misfit Funnybooks! On the other hand, Hubert was a long-lived strip that I have no memory of ever reading at the time or in reprints. Hubert apparently advises removing your diving helmet underwater. Maybe he's related to Arthur Curry. In my opinion, Hubert is welcome to emigrate to the Isle of Misfit Funnybooks, although I could use a copy in my Four Color set. Jack -

Me too. I'm a sucker for mixed genres. An Illudium Pu-36 explosive space modulator in the cowboy's hand would have spiced up the cover real good though. Jack -

I like Heckle & Jeckle! I was afraid of that. How low can we go? Gandy Goose? Little Roquefort? Little Aspirin? (nah, someone would want those because they're Timely/Atlas) Li'l Genius? Little Angel? Surely there's SOME character that no one likes. Not too bad -- er, I mean, not too good! Jack -

Is the ink purple? I have a few that look like they were dipped in purple ink on the edge. Didn't know why? Yes, dark blue-purple. Returned by the distributor? Something like that. There are huge bundles of some unpopular books still sitting in warehouses, as far as I can tell. Mine were bought in big ebay lots from Lou at bakertownepartners a couple of years ago. Probably others here know more about warehouse lots than I do. Jack -

Argh! As more Four Colors that I'd like to own appear while I'm writing my message. Bob, surely you have some REAL stinkers. No funny animals better liked than, say, Heckle and Jeckle. Once again, I think most of the people reading this post would be happy to own that one. Don't you have anything that people wouldn't bother to pay the postage on? Flippity and Flop might be the right idea. I bought #44 and 46 for a big 50¢ each not long ago. Jack -

Three Four Color books on my want list, including two lovely Walt Kelly covers? You're going to do better -- or is it worse? -- than that to qualify for the Misfit Funnybooks thread! How about we have 'em for dinner! Jack -

I like 'em too. Do you have a full set of the World Around Us series? I've been slowly accumulating them but stalled about half-way. Are some significantly harder to find than others? Several of mine are apparent warehouse remainders with binding marks and huge splotches of distributor's ink. Unfortunately I don't have any scans and the books are inconveniently in storage. Jack -

I've always liked it, but until just now, no one ever told me they liked it too! I like it -- this was on the highest priorities for me as a result of reading Gerber's for the first time. I actually bought my first copy from Ernie -- an unadvertised Cosmic Aeroplane. Sweet! Murphy Anderson and Gene Colan on the inside don't hurt either. I think Selegue is going to end up with my copy.. ARGH! What a salesman! -- and now you've got your accomplice helping out. Jack -

Nice, bright cover! Have you read it? An odd little moralistic tale about a couple of immigrant kids that no one wants to befriend, somehow tied into the Glorious Future of Electric Power, if I remember right. I'm hunting for a whole set, but there are so many variant editions and so little information that I'll never know whether I'm done. As far as I can tell, they run from GEC-174, 1946 (the one I posted) to APG-17-5C, Inside the Atom, 1964. Anyone have an older or newer one? Jack I also have a copy of The Story of Light. I won't show but I'll show my copy of Land of Plenty - -

Strange costumes! It's a Halloween cover? Does it go with the Cole story? I see (GCD) that the art's by James Wilcox. Not a familar name, but maybe a familar hand. Did he draw a lot of Golden Age books? He looks like the "oddly stiff figures" artist I've never been able to identify on other covers. Jack
