Not sure if you was around in the mid-90's during the last big GA bull market run when the heat finally settled in on the Fox books.

It must have been quite hot because even old slow Bob hiked his top of guide price for Mystery Men 1 from $2,100 in his '95 price guide up to $8,500 the next year for an unprecedented 305% increase in just one year.  :whatthe:

I personally believed that unprecedented hike virtually cooled off the heat on all of the Fox books almost overnight as purchasers and investors always like to buy things that are perceived to be undervalued, as opposed to buying items that are viewed as being relatively fully valued or possibly even being overvalued with more downside risk to them.  hm

I can only hope you are correct!   I would love to see collectors investors start to lose interest in the Fox books as well as Centaurs, which seem to be enjoying similar attention at the moment.

I'm pretty much waiting for The Early Fox books (basically anything Fine or Simon) to cool off before I dip my toes in these waters again.

Back to All Tops and Phantom Ladies....

The problem I have found with most golden age hero titles is that even if the market cools off (which it inevitably does), the prices remain at those hot levels.  Collectors generally want to make their purchase price back.

With Fox books on fire right now, does anyone foresee a future where a MYSTERY MEN 7 in mid-grade will be able to be purchased for less than 3K? Any old timers recall a Fox frenzy like we are seeing now?

Not a dud among them!  Is that your second AMF 2/5 copy?  Don't you have the Larson, or am I getting old?

    What a great selection.  Congratulations!!

SDCC pick-up and it's Holy Grail time as I NEVER thought I'd be able to own an acceptable copy of this book. The third ever published DC comic, the first science-fiction cover in comics, and while this copy certainly has its share of problems it is unrestored and has off-white pages. I couldn't be happier!

Fantastic pick up Steve!!  I have always loved this multi-panel sci-fi cover.  I hope one day I can get down to LA again and paw through your copy.  Hopes of owning a copy are, as you alluded to, are scarce!

Thank you for that :) Yeah, I would've paid more for it, but how much more I couldn't say for sure. I CAN say that since I didn't HAVE to pay any more for it, that enabled me to get the 58 a little more comfortably. They're the same grade, same pq & same price in the guide, but the 58 cost me $200 more, so yeah, I'd have easily paid that much more additionally for the 57. I feel the same way about that cover. It's just one of those hard-to-describe things that strikes you when you see it. I have also always dug how either Tryg Hagen or Cecil Coop wrote Larson's name on the helmet. BTW, those are the 2 employees of the Cruetz drugstore who are responsible for writing Lamont's name on most of the books. ALL of this (and more) information can be found in Jon's CBM #71 article. I hope some folks either dig out their copies or pick some up. You'll be glad ya did!!!

Thanks for the additional info Frisco.  Will have to try to find that issue.

I got bitten by the 57 so badly that I bid on/won a very low grade copy off eBay this weekend.  Couldn't find a better one anywhere online at the moment, so this will have to do until I can upgrade.

I can tell by your enthusiasm that these books will be well taken care of!

Thanks again RJ!! As you know, I had been admiring the Popular 57 ever since I saw it in the color cover gallery centerspread in the CBM issue with Jon's article. It's very surreal that it will now reside in my collection. I never spoke of it, to either you or Billy, but it was a secret top want. The 58 actually cost hundreds more, but as Jon himself had commented on these boards in the past, a run of Larsons is something you seldom see. So, thanks to him offering the majority of his collection for sale, I'll now have a tiny "run" of Larsons. Every one of my geeks came away with something for their boxes ..... of that I couldn't be more pleased!!!

Just saw this, and I'm so glad I didn't bid you up.  1) you have wanted it way longer than I have, and 2) it sounds like no matter how high I bid, you would have crushed me anyways!  This cover really speaks to me for some reason.

So it was YOU who won the POPULAR #57!!!  That was my #1 choice in the entire auction.  I was gunning for it, but I thought twice about continuing to bid it up, as I figured it would continue beyond by price range.  I love the "Larson" on the helmet, almost as if Martan's mom wrote it there so he wouldn't get his helmet mixed up with the other Marvel Men.  Congratulations on a great book... I am jealous, but stoked for you.

You have great taste, Jimbo.  That YELLOW CLAW 3 would have been a sweet pick up, but these GREEN CLAWs are a nice consolation prize.
