Black Widow > Captain Marvel AINEC.

I enjoyed it more the second time around. The final fight was amazing especially the part where Thanos takes on Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America by himself. The CGI and 3D was really nice. First time around i think as on old fan I had ideas about what should/could happen that didn't materialize and even though I liked the movie it might not have lived up to my expectations. I accepted it for what it did give more the second time around so first viewing an 8.0 and 2nd maybe as high as 9.0

One thing I would have loved to see but didn't expect to happen would be Thanos to start seeing grown versions of Gamora in the death's robe and thus spawning his love affair with death. I thought with pale make up she could really look like death from the old comics. I thought it would have been a cool twist.

I also am sick of people using the word "racist."  Racism is a spectrum, and we're all somewhere on it.  Far fewer people are the at the end of the spectrum of complete racial objectivity than think they are.  So you think that person over there is a racist because of <insert reason here>?  Well, are you living in an area where you're a minority in that area?  Have you dated and married people of a different race, and have you had mixed-race children yet?  If not, then perhaps there's still a thread or two of racism in you, too?  hm  Institutional segregation ended half a century ago, yet 80% or more of the major races in America have mostly self-segregated themselves into racially heterogeneous neighborhoods.  Much of that is more related to fleeing crime and poverty than race, but they're all wrapped together due to the history of slavery and Jim Crow, and the fact remains that voluntary racial segregation is still the reality of life for the great majority of people in America.

Racism is a relative concept.  Everyone who uses it about someone else tends to think that other person is more racist than they are, yet most of the people who use it are also more racist than someone else, too.  It's counterproductive to use the term except when describing a clearly extreme example of it.  There are much more appropriate and less inflammatory words to use that are FAR more effective in changing whoever you're trying to change in labeling someone as a racist.

I just keep it simple and embrace or reject someone based on their own merits. As society goes i feel like the same machine that mandated racism 75 years ago is mandating tolerance today. i have no use for it. Its all control. Like the joker said their morals are a bad joke, dropped at the first sign of trouble, when the chips are down these civilized people will eat each other.  I think there is more truth to that than most people can admit to themselves.  I think if you are true to yourself racism is ruled out because we are all just members of the human race in reality. So i never worry about society telling me what boxes I need to check regarding racial objectivity. As far as advancing minorities in this country at this point I think its largely about economic disparity. Solid parenting must push their children to succeed financially because all the protests and noise in the world will never level the playing field as long as a group of people is impoverished or struggling financially. The more money minority families have the more minorities will be in better neighborhoods, better schools, better access to legal counsel etc.

Does anyone know how the Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes average rating scores differ?  I thought that both scores are theoretically calculated in a similar way--by taking a critic's score, converting it to a more standard scale of 10 points, and averaging all critic scores together--but I just realized they do differ significantly sometimes, as is evident in the scores below for all of the main Star Wars films:

    • Episode IV - RT 8.6, Metacritic 92
    • Episode V - RT 8.9, Metacritic 81
    • Episode VI - RT 7.2, Metacritic 53
    • Episode I - RT 6.0, Metacritic 51
    • Episode II - RT 6.7, Metacritic 54
    • Episode III - RT 7.3, Metacritic 68
    • Episode VII - RT 8.2, Metacritic 81
    • Episode VII - RT 8.2, Metacritic 81
    • Episode VIII - RT 8.2, Metacritic 86

Just for comparison Metacritic's highest-rated superhero film is The Dark Knight and that only got an 82, so an 86 is an exceptionally high score for them to give to Last Jedi.  Looking at those scores, I agree more with the Rotten Tomatoes average rating because Empire Strikes Back is the best film and RT reflects that, whereas Metacritic has the original film as best by a wide margin of 11 points over Empire.  Having said that, there's certainly a case to be made that Episode IV broke such new ground that it's a more significant film overall, a fact reflected by the fact that it's the first sci-fi film to ever get nominated for an Oscar whereas Episode V wasn't nominated at all.  hm

Is the difference in how they compute the scores, or is the difference in the critics they choose to include in their scoring?  ???

While Empire is the greatest sequel of all time Star Wars truly was groundbreaking in a way that I feel is under appreciated today by many fans. I was 7 when I saw star wars i believe in early june just before the end of the first grade. I left earth that day and spent the next few years in a galaxy far far away. I saw Empire on opening day thanks to my dad being willing to go the extra mile to make it happen for me and my best friend(thanks dad!). Empire was a truly great movie with such a great beginning and end. Sadly believe it or not the greatest spoiler of all time was let loose by the local newsman on air a day or two before release, While I wasn't sure I believed that vader was luke's father that revelation lessened the shock when it came out in the theatre so the impact of that great moment was lessened for me! With that in mind I still think star wars is the greatest of the franchise and what Lucas went through to make it including almost giving himself a heart attack from the stress makes the story even greater in my evaluation.

I wonder what this means for Super-hero shows and movies Fox already has in the works.

Legion, for example, is AMAZING and I think season 2 is set to come out in February.

But I could see Marvel stopping a season 3 from happening so they can execute their own vision for the character and incorporate him into the marvel-verse (whether that be on the silver screen, or in some sort of X-men or New Mutants TV series). Which would be a shame because it's honestly so good right now.

Would love to see a FF easter egg at the end of avengers infinity war - like a quick scene of stretcho working in the lab to find a way to stop Thanos while the thing is razzing him about it then the camera pans out to shot of the FF logo on top of the Stark building! Time will tell but I believe these properties are in good hands now.

  5. Saw it last night. Somewhat enjoyable and I wasn't disappointed as I thought the trailers didn't promise much. 6.5 for me.  Starting to feel like I am watching the same movie over and over again from marvel. Spider-man was another missed opportunity to shatter the formula like iron man 1 did and do a different kind of hero movie.

the good: Tom Holland is a good fit for spier-man so they got the most important part right

the bad: Spidey's suit unlocked with the computer voice made me feel like I am watching an iron man movie not a spider movie, hope that goes away.  Spidey doesn't need that, and he doesn't need a mentor either, the early years of spidey learning to use his wits and powers on his own are too important to the character imo.

the ugly: Who ever thought spidey would be playing second fiddle to Iron Man? I actually love iron man so this works for me but this really feels like iron mans universe doesn't it? Who woulda thunk it could happen?

  6. THX fellow Spidey Fans...tough book in grade...only 22 of these...

Rounds out my 1-20 set... :headbang:

Thats a serious collection. Are you perfectly happy with every one of them or is there a copy in the run you would like to upgrade? I imagine most if not all have newsstand gloss in this grade range which is just dreamy on these old spidey's!

Amazing-looking book! Do you think the scrapes are a result of removed color touch?

Thought those scratches looked odd. A beautiful book nonetheless.

I guess its possible. Hadn't thought of that. Makes sense though as the back cover is completely white not even a hint of soil along the spine so if the book ever was touched would have looked nice enough to warrant it in some peoples minds(back in the day) !

  8. Always wanted a copy way before the whole movie thing. Think it's safe to just wait until after the movie hits and hope for price to fall back down?

:sorry: but he who hesitates is lost. Shoulda bought back in the day. It should come down a little and plateau after the movie unless its received big then it might see even more growth. In any event I think its unlikely it will falll back to pre movie hype prices ever again.

  9. my april win:lf_zpsrdblrkjn.jpeg

This is probably the best 7.0 on the planet. Saying this is probably not hyperbole.

Thanks Barton! It does not disappoint in hand either. Most of the book is NM. Just some scrapes on the spine keep it from going into orbit.

In fact thanks to everyone for the nice compliments - it is fun to own a book like this

  10. Doctor Strange’s Erasure Of Tibet Is A Political Statement

Recently, however, discussion of Marvel’s relationship with the Chinese film market came to light once again after C. Robert Cargill, one of the screenwriters who worked on Doctor Strange, spoke very bluntly about changes made to Stephen Strange’s mentor in mysticism, the Ancient One. In the comics, the Ancient One is hundreds of years old and originates from the area that would later become known as Tibet, and Doctor Strange travels to Tibet to find him. Naturally, the Ancient One’s original background was a bit of a sticking point for Marvel because, as Cargill explained:

“The Ancient One was a racist stereotype who comes from a region of the world that is in a very weird political place. He originates from Tibet, so if you acknowledge that Tibet is a place and that he’s Tibetan, you risk alienating one billion people who think that that’s bulls**t and risk the Chinese government going, ‘Hey, you know one of the biggest film-watching countries in the world? We’re not going to show your movie because you decided to get political’…"

“The only way this character could be more awkward is if he had been made back in the thirties… and instead of going to the Orient [Doctor Strange] went to Palestine and learned from a Palestinian master… That’s the only way this could be any uglier than this one now.”

He makes it sound like the change to the character's origin was to appease the Chinese box office. Ouch!

    This is total BS.

If anything the real politics would be about acknowledging Tibet as the location itself. Do they think it will be any less insulting to the Chinese by having a British woman playing the role of a Tibetan Monk? The Chinese don't want to acknowledge Tibet as an autonomous region. As far as they're concerned, it's always been part of China. This whole stereotype excuse is actually a moot point.

It's like saying Chinese people won't watch Asian martial arts movies because it's too stereotypical.

All they had to do was change the locations name from Tibet to Nepal. Changing the characters race was not necessary. It looks like Strange is traveling to Nepal in the trailer anyways, cause they do show a Kathmandu temple at one point. So where does the issue of race come in?

This is just a poor excuse to justify their decision, rather than the actual reason behind it. Besides, I think the Ancient One being Asian would have actually increased ticket sales in China.

This is exactly what I said to my friend the other day.

The whole idea was poorly conceived imo. I am glad at least marvel has felt the heat enough to comment about it. The ancient one should just have been an Asian man from Nepal. I can understand them wanting to avoid chinas politics but the answer was simple not complicated.

Insisting the ancient one be female just feels like a reach to me and the whole feminist theme is reaching the point of overkill in most of the shows i am watching. I can appreciate women are making up a larger part of the geek audience these days and want to be represented but I think that has already been accomplished no need to force it anymore imo.

  11. The only thing bad about spidey 1 is that there is this little book called AF15 that always semms to steal its thunder.

Personally though I love it and its one of my favorite all-time covers(much cooler than AF15).

That 9.2 is a true dream copy. I'm quite sure I will only ever own one in my dreams!!

  12. I love the date stamp - fantastic copy!

yeah made me wonder if it is a lost green river copy

I was wondering that myself actually.

Do you have to have some other form of provenance before CGC will give it the pedigree?

my impression is its just speculation.

  13. wow. great buy, super nice edges- first impression 9.6 - based on FC don't see it as less than 9.4 - coupls spine ticks but the rest is :insane:

I think he's spot on with his 9.2/9.4 estimate.

Amazing copy, amazing price. (thumbs u

    -J.

imo absolutely no less than 9.2 i certainly have never seen a 9.0 this nice. I think I have seen 9.6 copies that aren't as nice but it does have a couple spine ticks counting against it.
