Just picked up another goodie from my LCS. The color breaking damage at the top left corner hurts. So, let's talk about that eye sore of a brown bottom the book has. How much of an impact does that type of defect have on the grade? I have quite a few books with that issue. Thanks in advance for any and all input

Here it is! The book that i never thought I would own because I was always looking for the perfect deal that would never come.
Book looks really nice from afar, and then you see the flaws up close.
The book has a weird ink stain on the lower outer edge the runs the entire book. Then there is what appears to be a sharpie spot on a few of the pages almost as it someone wanted to remember their place for later reading?
Finally the book itself seems to have had water damage of some sort because the whole book feels wavy and makes a crackling sound as you turn the pages. No visible water damage though.
With a clean and press, what grade am I looking at for this book? Thank you all in advance for the inputs

Im considering picking up this 1st app dr. Doom but not well educated on restoration and how cgc would be able to deal with this stuff.
The book is overall solid until we get to the extra (rusted) bottom staple and the weird tape looking residue on both bottom corners. The "tape" feels grainy almost so that might be the leftover residue and not actual tape.
Ultimately I would like a blue label. What are the chances of that happening? Or is this a surebet purple maybe even green? Any and all opinions are appreciated. Thank you

I have an ASM 50 with staining that goes almost all the way through to the last page on the bottom right corner. It gets lighter as it goes closer to the middle of book then heavy again as it goes through the end of book.
Presents ok as long as you don't open the book. Lol but smh
How bad of a hit would the book take if graded? Is there a rule of thumb like "deduct x amount of points for this type of damage"? Thanks in advance for the input

Very excited to add this to the collection. Got some problems though. Mainly the tan line on the top of back cover and the one page that has a horrible fold at the top corner and heavy fading/discoloration on hawkgirls face. What grade say you all? Can that one page be pressed out to eliminate the fold? Thanks in advance

People are too mean. I mean I hate stains as much as the next guy but I don't find these on here that bad. Not like a huge stain that covers 1/8th of the entire cover....much worse.
Anyyywaaayyy I think it is nice than some 3.0's I have seen but I don't believe it hits 4.0 because of those stains so 3.5 seems the right grade to settle on.
Is it possible to remove some of the stains ( like the spots on the bottom) with a clean and press service? I have no clue of these things so any advice is appreciated

I was looking for a term that slots between gross and train wreck, and icky fits nicely! I’m totally stealing that for my descriptive toolbox.
Unfortunately, eye appeal is significantly diminished due to the stains... 3.0
Multiple people have said how filthy this book looks. I need to get better at my book purchases apparently, but smh!😅

As it is, I would say 3.0. But I'm a harsh grader.
Thats a good thing. CGC will probably be harsh too. Thank you for your input.

Ouch. I appreciate the honesty. Lol
I was trying to jump on before kang appeared and the prices got stupid. Ill take a 3.5 if possible. Thanks for your input.

Picked this guy up recently. Has some really filthy stain spots on the bottom front not sure what that is. Some sun tanning on the left side of cover. And there is some chipping on the top of the cover. Let me know what you guys think. How good a grade are we guessing before I send her in? I plan on pressing as well. Hopefully, that doesn't make the chipping worse. Thanks in advance!

The green label is if there would be a huge difference between the grade you'd get if you went for a blue label. In this case, there are lots of issues with the comic so it wont get green.
@Kelgio82, I see this coming back as a 3.0 or thereabouts.I dodged the green label!!! Thank goodness!!!

My claremont signing book showed received as 6/30/2020 but now shows received as 8/17/2020. I added a press to my order so does that mean the book has been pressed and is ready for grading? Or did something happen and they scanned the book as received again?

DId you add Pressing? That will delay it a 2-3 weeks.
Yes, I added pressing since I felt it probably could've benefited from one. So august it is? That blows

@Kelgio82, I see this coming back as a 3.0 or thereabouts.I hope you are right. Guess I'll find out in a few months when cgc sends it back. I'll post results on here too.
Obviously a press is not gonna save the damages on this book but would you say the pressing that cgc offers is worth it or should I next time look for an independent guy?

Low grade regardless of detached staple😞😞😷
When you say low grade regardless, do you think lower than 2.0? I don't want a 0.5 coming back as I would be better off leaving it in a toploader.

hey everyone, I'm new to grading and could use ALOT of help. CGC has an upcoming private signing with Chris clairemont and I wanted to send my xmen 101 in but was curious as to what the grade would end up being. Its low grade, that much I know, but what is everyone's opinion on how low a grade. Looks like the first several pages from cover are detached at the bottom staple but then the rest are still attached.
Also, would pressing and cleaning help the overall grade? Or am I just better off displaying in mylar? Thanks in advance everyone
UPDATE: Finally got the book back and am very pleased with the results. The bottom detached staple area flattened pretty nicely. Thanks everyone for your input

Hey everyone,
I'm Sergio, from new jersey. I've been a fan of comics all throughout my childhood (late 80s-90's). Marvel, DC, malibu, image, dark horse. It didnt matter, i was reading it if the cover looked cool, lol.
But........Been out of the loop for the last 15 years. Any recommendations on what to catch up on are welcome. After a recent visit to my parents house, my father provided me with some of my comics he surprisingly saved. So friggin awesome, dad!!! Definitely renewed my love of collecting. But now I also wanna start having my more prized books graded and boast/display them in my mancave. Im not sure how that whole process works but hopefully I can read what others have done on here and figure it out.
I look forward to engaging with the community. Should be fun
PGM Fantastic Four #5
in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?

A little over a year ago I asked the community about the extra staple and tape residue on this potential purchase in regards to restoration. Mixed reactions given: remove it / don't remove it. Well I finally bought the book and would love the opinion of the community on the grade.
Book is complete, an extra staple (rusted) added at the bottom left because of a 1-2 cm spine split. There's tape residue on both bottom corners. Lower right edge missing a small piece. The tape on left edge wraps around to back cover. Also, the "S" in fantastic has scratched off ink. On the back cover, there is a tear on the mid outer edge. Tons of color breaks along the spine. So, what does the community think would be the grade if I sent it in as is? Thanks in advance everyone
