  1. I've got a comic that is still sealed and inside a cardboard slipcase, would it be better to send it off as is (and have CGC open it up) or do it myself and avoid any extra handling?

This maybe a silly question, but it's the first time I've sent a book like this off to be graded!

  2. So I sent a batch of books off to be graded recently, among them was a double cover of droids #1
Pretty happy with the grades I got (two 9.8's in one batch!) however it seems as though CGC may have missed the double cover on my droids comic, because there's absolutely no mention of it on the label whatsoever!

Has this happened to anyone else, and is it just as simple as sending it back for a regrade?
And should I include a note to bring attention to error?

  3. The replies I've received from my precious posts have been very enlightening, and have helped me a great deal in finding certain defects, and what to look out for if I hope to get a certain grade, so I'd like to thank you for that!
Today I bring to you Captain America Annual 8, another book I've been trying to track down for some time, what can I say? I'm a sucker for great wolverine covers, and marvel comics based off of flash in the pan cartoons from the 80's (see my ewoks #2 post on the latter)

Apart from some minor spine ticks, and a miss cut of the book along the side, what else is wrong with this, and what range of the grading scale would this fall in? while not being a flawless copy it seems, I think it might fall either within VFN+ or VFN/NM at the most, but that's my very rough estimate

    What do you think?

  4. Oh wow, this one disappointed me greatly - I'm not quite sure of this particular issue's publishing history, but it's a pain in the arse to get this if you're in the British isles, something tells me the exclusion of a UK price on the cover means that this wasn't distributed over here?
Anyway, this is a great cover, and this is a book that I've been hoping to add to my collection for a while, but when I thought I finally tracked down a NM copy, I get this!

So these are the defects I've noticed, on the front cover there seems to be some kind of staining that runs parallel to the spine, running all the way up to the price box, it is faint, and the scanner might have picked up on it, but I think it's most visible in the bottom corner. The back seems okay, but I stress the word "seems" and on the very first page you see some weird brown staining; I find it funny that campbell's soup is being advertised here, because it looks like someone has spilled some campbell's on the page!

So, fine folks of the CGC forums, what is the verdict?

Maybe, maybe a 6.5. The back cover is awful. There's wear along the entire bottom edge, a whole constellation of spine stress and damage at upper left. The front looks better in the scan but I suspect the scan is hiding spine stress. It can't hide the crease at lower right and... whatever is going on at top left. If there's actually missing paper associated with that defect, we're back down to the 6.0 range. I can't decide if there's some discoloration at the left margin of the UPC, while we're at it.

If you paid more than about $8-9 for this book in this grade, you overpaid.

I love the unique challenges of collecting stuff that isn't the hot market books, but this misgrade isn't really excusable. Willing to name and shame the seller here?

This was a great and detailed post, and helped me better understand the defects to look out for when buying comics.
As for the seller, it's a name that -- I have come to realize -- has been thrown about this forum often, and it's Silver-Acre based in the UK.
I've bought from him in the past, and in all fairness a lot of his books (seemed) to be in good condition, however I've had to re-evaluate a lot of the books I've bought from him, after my first CGC submission, when I realized a lot of his supposed Near mint books, ended up looking like my copy of Alf #4, which was graded an 8.0.

Safe to say, I won't be buying from this chap anymore.

It appears I'm not the only one, looks like Supes got the shaft as well!

  6. I've recently had the misfortune to get this through the mail this morning, it's not what you would call a key issue, but I like collecting books of this nature. This was sold to me as a near mint (Though he didn't actually specify either NM- NM or NM+) even though it obviously is not, I was wondering if you fine folks could tell me how far off this grading actually is.

Don't pull any punches, how badly was I ripped off?
