Yeah, I paid for a new year at the Associates level.
Had a hard time trying to decide between Associates or Premium. I think that they are both good deals but, I'm kindof low on funds right now, so the choice is made. I hope to make a few submissions soon. The problem is, I don't know when, and I had coupons for free submissions, and almost let them run out. Thank God I remembered to use them. This year I will not have to worry about it.

Its been awhile. I decided to get some books I have and add them to try and bring my registry score up.
I was trying to get over 20,000. Thats not very many points. Had to enter about 100 books. The one that put me over (barely) was a comic that I've always wanted. Just got this copy a few years ago (nov 2009) for $61.

I just deleted a bunch of sets from the registry.
I got to thinking that I may never add anything more to them. I only kept the ones that I plan on building up or even completing in the future. My score took a hugh hit. I drop from around 260 to 432. Did I do the right thing? I think so, it makes looking at may sets a little easier and might give me a little more focus. I do plan on keeping the books from those deleted sets so, if I get to missing the points, I can always reenter them.

    Got two new ones today.
I recently pointed out a web site that had a issue mschmidt was looking for and he rewarded me with Sandman #20 signed and sketched by Colleen Doran. I got to say that I think that I got the better comic. THanks. Michael.
I also purchased from him, Sandman: Endless Nights Special for $40. I love any Sandman book in 9.8 but this one really looks great.
I'll won't be buying to much more this year because Christmas is coming and I got to buy gifts. I might add 2 or 3 more to the collection. We will see how the bidding goes.
Thanks again to mschmidt (Michael) for the incredible freebee.
    Gary.

I've decided to start working on this set.
It's been awhile since the last time I wrote. I've decided to start buying some of the Sandman comics that I'm missing. I would like to get all the Vertigo issues (47-75) in 9.8.
I got a good start, as I've just recently added 47 and 75 to the set, and both are from the Golden State collection. Thanks to World Wide comics for a good deal on those two issues.
I also plan on adding earlier issues but, because they are harder to find and more expensive it will be awhile before I try for them.

    Its submission time again.
Just put this in the mail to CGC this morning. I think it should grade around 7.5. I've been thinking about getting it graded for a while now and finally decided to go for it. I'll write more as I receive more info.

Just got This in the mail yesterday.
I sent this in on the 10th of Jan and got it back yesterday. Thats pretty fast. I'm not sure what I'll be sending in next.

Sorry I forgot to mention the grade. I only got a 2.0 on this but thats what I can afford. I'm happy with the grade as I was expecting a lower one.
  9. garsull2
    I got a 9.4.
I didn't receive the high grade I wanted. What I wonder is, is this a good grade for a Playboy? I don't really know. This is the first Playboy that I submitted, and it was only because of the Marge Simpson cover. I have no idea if I will ever send in more Playboys.

    Just Check the status and....
I've been checking once a week, and today I see, that I got a grade of 2.0. Thats the grade I bought it at, and I'm happy with it. Still waiting for a grade on the Playboy, and of course to have them both back. I'll write more when I find out more.

Yeah, I know its a few days late. Its also been a while since my last journal. Just wanted to post what I hope to do this year with the collection.
I didn't buy much in 2009. I was laid off for 6 months. I'm back to work now and hope for a better year this time. I still won't be spending but because I have to pay down some credit card debt. My goals for collecting are...
    1. Finish off The Forever People part of Kirbys Fourth world set.
    2. Get issues 13-22 and 25 of Conan, the Barbarian in VF.
    3. Marvel Spotlight 5 in CGC 7.0
    4. Ghost Rider 1973 #'s 1,2 in CGC 7.0
    5. Hero for Hire 1 in CGC 7.0
    6. Marvel SPecial Edition #15 in CGC 7.0
    7. Batman 227 in at least CGC 6.5
    8. Organize the collection. Maybe even sell some stuff.
Will I be able to do this? Only time will tell. I should have fun trying. I'll post as I make progress.

Just checked the status on my last submission and ...
    Simpsons Comics #143 9.8
    Simpsons Comics #145 9.8
    Simpsons Comics #146 9.8
I really enjoy this series and have been reading them off and on since the first issue. I've been working on organizing my collection and coming across some of these, that I will be submitting in the future.

Just a few thoughts about collecting CGC books.
When I first started collecting the CGC;s it seemed as the prices would never stop going up. Now the prices seem better but, more collectors are in.
My problem is that I don't have the money to compete with some of you. My solution is, to take my time and buy stuff raw to get graded or even buy lower grades.
The CGC has made this more fun than ever. I love the registry and plan to join as a paying member soon.
I don't know if I will try adding addition journal entries. As you can see I'm no writer. Still, I like the idea of talking about my NEED to collect to others who I assume will understand that need.
Also, I was wondering if anyone thinks that its weird to start a set with the intention of buying only one or two books in that set? Especially if its a set that spans decades. Sooner or later it becomes a space issue. I've decided to go for a few whole sets and mostly partial sets after that.
  14. garsull2
It toke me more than 3 years to finish this set. Now what?
I started this set in 2006 and finished it a few weeks ago. I still need a better copy of number 3, but its done for now. I also need to add pictures and better descriptions.
So, what set is next? I've decided to stick with DC and try to do Kirbys Fouth World set. I have no idea how hard this set will be. It looks like I will buy the issues in order and read them before submitting. Looks like I shooting for grades between 9.0 and 9.2.
I also want to add more to my Simpsons comics run and hope to have 9.6 or better on these.I don't believe I can finish this set but, I want to continue adding to it.
The last set is going to be a 9.8 run of Locke & Key.
I'll let you know how its going.
  15. garsull2
    Just got my copy.
If you are a fan of the old Warren Magazines then you need to find a copy of this one. The first Volume, by Dark Horse comics, reprints issues 1-5 and looks great. Its a bit expensive at $50 but its worth it. Now you can read these issues and have your original copies certified.
  16. garsull2
I got the grades on the last order I sent in.
Just checked and they have the grades posted.
Fantastic Four Annual #2---Apparent 6.5. I really expected a lower grade on this so I'm happy. I paid $85 for this one.
Tales From The Crypt #46---5.0 which is what I expected on this one. I paid $134 for this one.
Also, I just renewed my membership for the year. I already have a few ideas for the free submissions but, have not made up my mind yet.
I usually start slowing down on buying comics aroud Oct. because I have to start buying Christmas gifts. I think that I won't be adding to my sets that much until after December. Unless I get a really good deal.
  17. garsull2
I finally got the grades on the last group of comics I submitted.
I've been checking 2 times each week and I finally got the news.
    The grades are as follows....
    Hellblazer #1--9.4
    Sandman (Gaiman series)#2--9.2
Locke & Key (all first prints) 1-3 are all 9.8
I sent in 2 comics Friday 11 July
    Fantastic Four Annual #2 1964
    Tales From the Crypt #46
I can't wait to see how long these take.
Hopefully, I'll be able to meet my goal for the year with those 2. I wanted to reach 15,000 points on the registry for the year. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Just a couple issues I submitted and why I sent them in.
Just looked and seen that a few books I've submitted are listed as received. Its been about a week and I think that its taking them a little longer to grade them.
    The books submitted are
Hellblazer #1 which I bought back when it first come out. I may start trying to get the first dozen issues graded.
Sandman #2 another issue that I bought back when it first came out. I love this series and will probably get the entire series grade. Should be easy, just got to go thru the boxes and find them.
Locke & Key issues 1-3 I just thought that since this was written by Stephin Kings son that it would be a good one to get slabbed. The bad thing is that I read my issues before sending them so I probably will not get a 9.8.
Anyways I let you all know how it turns out when I get the good news.

Due to recent problems I've been having, I wonder if buying graded comics is the best way a collector on a budget can go.
I had to get a little bit of work done on my car. That turned into a lot of work and a huge bill. This combined with a credit card bill that is already large and the fact that my work is slowing down means that I've been looking at the way I buy my comics.
Mostly I've been buying graded stuff from Ebay and Heritage. The prices are usually pretty high for 9.6 or higher stuff. I have these comics in my collection already but they are usually not in the best condition.
I think that the time has come to stop buying graded comics and just buy ungraded books. I can also submit books from my collection.
In the future if I see a book that I already have, that is graded higher, I will bid on it, and if I win, sell the lower graded copy.
This is the slow way of building a high grade collection. I'm a very impulse driven buyer. I also like the instant gratification of buying a comic that is already graded 9.6 or better.
We will see if I can stick to this plan. I've tried before and couldn't do it.
  20. garsull2
I'm still bidding on ebay and even Heritage.
I know that I said I wasn't going to be buying anything but it's not my fault I can't stop. Everyone keeps putting up such cool stuff.
Anyway, I hope to be doing the same soon. I joined up with the paid membership today and will summit a few comics in the hopes of trying to make my hobby pay for itself.
Not sure what I'll be selling. I don't plan on selling alot either. Just trying to make a few extra dollars to redirect into buying more signature books or stuff for my sets.
So I'll still be bidding. Just not a lot. If you have any good deals for me let me know. Still looking to complete my Joker set.
  21. garsull2
I really need to pay down the credit card.
Ok, so I got a little carried away buying stuff on ebay. I won't be able to add anything to my registry sets for a while. I think maybe a couple months. The good news is that I did get some good stuff. A copy of Incredible Science Fiction #31 from EC. A Bongo Comics FCBD issue signed by Bill Morrison.
I will still be looking for a few books I need, either graded or raw. I will also be looking on the registry at the new most recent additions other members are making and will be on the chatboards.
  22. garsull2
I just realized another reason for adding stuff to the registry.
I know that the registry is sort of a way to show off way I got. I've been online alot today looking at ebay and other sites. I started to realize that I couldn't remember everything in my collection. The registry provides a easy listing of what I have and the condition it's in. No more accidential dupes. Thanks CGC.

Superboy and The Legion of Superheroes #258
I'm sorry I don't have a scan, but I just had to write about this. After loosing on all the atlas titles I bid on over the weekend, I bid on this one. A 9.8 copy of this title. I loved Superboy when I was a kid and the legion issues where always the most fun. This was the last issue featuring Superboy in the title and the next issue was just The Legion Of Super-Heroes. I don't have copies of almost all the legion issues but none of them would come close to a 9.8. I paid $61 dollars on Ebay. So, I guess that you can win some on Ebay. If you bid enough times.
  24. garsull2
I'm still having trouble bidding against better funded collectors.
I tried to get a few atlas-seaboard comics for my set but, was outbidded 5 times. I not sure what to think. I knew these comics would be hard but, I thought the demand was low enough that I would be able to win a least one lot. I'm just wondering, is there any series that a collector of modest means can try for?

I'm still going for this set and off course the joker set. When I'm done with these two, I think I will try for a few of my favorite Mad magazines and maybe chase a few Tales from the Crypt. I will be looking online but also at yardsales and comic stores around the state. I will be buying both raw and graded and hope to add to these sets and a set called PLOP which isn't on the registry yet.
I would also like to thank everyone who has replied to my other entries. It's nice to know that someone cared enough to read and write a reply. THANKS.
