I think the examples that we show for artists should reflect their original work for comic books. So the Frazetta Johnny Comets and the Raboy Flash Gordons are (tsk)

Not that it's hard to find superb examples of their work in comics.

Correcting my faux-pas, here are probably some of the best pages Raboy ever did in comics -

Well, at this rate, we won't have to worry about a different Survivor Series until 2009. lol

This one has had amazing responses and great pictures. My only fear is that it's not moving fast enough.

Thanks for posting the Raboy interior artwork, Michael. I`m now debating whether to move Raboy to #1. His faces and linework are incredible, although I can see why some people criticize him for drawing too many characters in poses.

I don't understand the reasoning on Hogarth. So what if it is reprints. It is still comic art that was printed in comic book format. Many comic fans (children at the time) were probably first introduced to Hogarth and Tarzan through Sparkler or Tip Top or whatever. Don't see many 10 year olds reading the newspapers.

This is not even taking into consideration how good he was.

That's a valid arguement Dale. However, as someone up thread pointed out (Scrooge?), if Hogarth is on this list, then you have to include the likes of Outcault, McCay, Foster, Raymond, and Caniff.

It's my understanding that, at the time, comics were considered a stepping-stone to other media. Hogarth's main career was outside of comic books, which is why I'm voting against him. He was already playing in the Big Leagues (syndication).

It may be flawed logic but, eventually, it's the same reason I'll use to vote against Kelly and Frazetta. They did a cup-o-coffee in comics and moved on to other things.

Yeah, you could say that. And I would say that Foster and Raymond should have been on the list. Never a fan of Caniff and don't know the other guys well enough to have an opinion that is relevant. I didn't make the list. It is exactly why I suggested to wait a few days and let some more names surface.

Well, you've got to like my honesty in this because I have learned over the years not to like Raboy as much as I used to. The above is the best Raboy ever did I think. It's so disheartening to see later stories where poses are copies over and over. Heck, even when Al Carreno was doing the art, here and there showed up some Raboy, photostated and pasted on top. It's quite jarring really. I talked to Steranko once and told him that I put Raboy in the "cold" artists category as he defines them and in a heartbeat agreed that it was a perfect example of beautiful art without a "soul". It's technically good but does not move the reader. Maybe I shouldn't use Steranko as a reference but I think the guy knows a thing or two about art (if not about perspective once in a while ...). By this, I mean that Raboy will not be in my top 5. Might be in my top 10. We'll see.
