Well, boxofficemojo listed the production budget as $140 million. So, Iron Man with its $201 million world wide take has made back its money and then some. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will use Iron Man as the blueprint for the rest of the movies they produce.

well, this isn't remotely how hollywood accounting works: first off- the theaters get 50% of the BO. the production budget is $140mm, prints & ads will probably run $50mm, paramount gets a % for distribution, you'd have to know if any of the major players have back end deals- like does downey or favreau get a % of the BO gross or a % of the net. yes, this film will be very profitable but it certainly isn't there after 3 days.

Not sure where you got the 50% figure for the movie theatre's take of the gross as this figure seems to be on the high side.

I thought the movie studio's take works on a sliding scale. The first 2 or 3 weeks is very very heavily weighted towards the movie studios with the theatres getting their money from the concessions. This situation gradually reverses itself in subsequent weeks with the movie theatres receiving the bulk of the take.

This is why the studios do such a big push for the opening weekends because this is where they roll in the money. The movie theatres, on the other hand, would much rather have a movie that has legs as this is money in their pockets.

Apparently, this is why the theatres did not do as well as expected with Spidey #3. All-time opening weekend take of over $150M, but was unable to follow through with any legs on the subsequent weekends. hm
