How Do You Sell An Invisible Plane?

So it was originally transparent, not invisible! Who started calling it invisible, Bob Kanigher? Or did William Marston change it at some point?

Kinda made sense in a Golden Age comics way. The selling point was the colorful nature of comic books, you have this red, white & blue costumed superhero, why make the artist cover her up, when instead you could just invent a transparent Amazon airplane?

 

During the Kanigher Silver Age years they fudged a bit by saying that WW could "ride the air currents" (but not actually fly). I think it was Perez who just decided to simplify it all and declared that the post-Crisis version could always fly wherever she wanted to go. And then I think it was Byrne who re-introduced the invisible/transparent airplane into new continuity, as a retro-nostalgic touch.
