Why is it that DC superheroes don't become movies like MARVEL superheroes?

I think one problem is first of all, that superhero films almost invariably focus on the origin story - proposed storylines for them are nearly always heavy with setup, situations that have to be worked out before the real action begins. This leads to problem two: except for Superman and Batman, most DC heroes have weak origins, certainly as against most Marvel characters. Stan Lee (and company) created characters with some backstory, in situations that were then affected by gaining "alter egos." By comparison most DC heroes just get their powers and take up superheroing as a hobby, at least as originally created.

I think sometimes a super hero movie that just dived straight into the action without any explanation of how the hero actually got to be there would work. Ang Lee's Hulk springs to mind when thinking of a movie where the back story seemed way too drawn out, to the point of making the rest of the movie have no appeal.

Not saying that's the way all movies should go, but if a character has a weak background or no background at all before their super hero status, why spend an hour trying to explain it at all? (shrug)
