Hmmm, should our Playboy's and Sports Illustrateds go in this forum for now?

Someone wisely suggested I check the Magazine forum (sadly I have scolled past this many a time and not stopped). I just purchases about a dozen early playboys in the realm of mid-gradeish. Volumes range from 2 through 6, but I do not know where to look to get an idea of value. Any suggestions? Pic below is pretty representative of the shape they are in...

Those show up on eBay from time to time, so that's probably a good place to get a sense of Fair Market Value.

Too bad you don't have #1!

Thanks for the tip...perused that briefly, but was hoping some more focused site or price guide existed. Will give it a more thorough look though :)

I realize "watch eBay" isn't all that helpful, but that's all I am aware of. They are certainly cool vintage mags, especially in nice condition.

It seems to me as though Playboys sell very well. I've only have a Playboy #1, so my knowledge is not that vast. But I feel like I've seen many Playboy issues from the early days and current issues selling for good money.

I sold through almost all of my Sports Illustrated, keeping only four of them for my personal collection:

I am a ; I should have told you to check the Heritage archives. Just go to ha.com and get a free account (easy to do, no sensitive information required). Then search the archives and type in "playboy 1954" or "playboy #2" or something like that.

I'll save you some of the trouble -- here are a few results of past auctions:

2010: Playboy #2 (1954), CGC 3.5 -- $143.40

2010: Playboy #2 (1954), CGC 1.0 -- $107.55

2009: Playboy #2 (1954), CGC 5.5 restored -- $227.05

2009: Playboy #2 (1954), VG -- $310.70

2008: Playboy #2 (1954), GD -- $191.20

2006: Playboy #2 (1954), FN/VF -- $836.50

2006: Playboy #2 (1954), VF- -- $2,151.00 (!!!!!)

2005: Playboy #2 (1954), VG -- $373.75

-----------------------

2010: Playboy #3 (1954), CGC 5.0 -- $310.70

2010: Playboy #3 (1954), CGC 1.5 restored -- $65.00

2010: Playboy #3 (1954), CGC 4.5 -- $143.40

2005: Playboy #3 (1954), FN/VF -- $632.50

------------------------

2010: Playboy #4 (1954), CGC 7.0 -- $262.90

2005: Playboy #4 (1954), VG+ -- $632.50

(Not sure why a raw VG+ would sell so much better than a slabbed FN/VF!)

---------------------------

2010: Playboy #5 (1954), CGC 7.5 -- $262.90

2010: Playboy #5 (1954), CGC 4.5 -- $143.40

2005: Playboy #5 (1954), VG+ -- $632.50

(Again, the 2005 sale of a lesser copy far exceeds the 2010 price... Weird.)

-----------------------------

2010: Playboy #6 (1954), CGC 9.0 -- $203.15

2010: Playboy #6 (1954), CGC 9.6 -- $1,434.00 (!!!!)

---------------------------

Based on the above, I think you can expect to get at least $100-$200 each from your Playboys, provided they are in decent condition.

I don't have the Playboy #1 anymore. It was a CGC 2.5, that I sold.

Thanks! Nope, not a football fan. I follow basketball religiously though.
