Reholder or file a claim?

21 posts in this topic

Since I have never submitted any books to CGC I was hoping that some of you that have would be able to answer this question. I have recently receive a shipment of books that has 8 cracked slabs and was wondering approximately how much it would cost to have them reholderd.

I know it $11 per book but I heard that CGC ships everything USPS registered mail? So I guess the question is approximately how much will the whole shebang cost with reholdering fees and shipping "from" and "to"?

Also do I have to be a "paid member" to submit books to CGC for reholdering?

Another question:

These books were insured when shipped. Is it worth it to file a claim? I like the books and would like to keep them, it's just unfortunate that the slabs are cracked. Will the USPS keep the books if a claim is filed?

Any help greatly appreciated (thumbs u

As far as I know you can claim for the cost of re-holdering only (no shipping fees included), after you've had them re-holdered and provided a receipt.

This is where the mail system gets confusing.

I had someone send me a CGCd book in an envelope months back, and of course the case arrived cracked. Luckily, it was insured.

When I took it into the local post office claims agent, at first she said you could just get the cost of a reholder. But then we called the main office for claims in St. Louis, and after some research they found out a change had taken place earlier this year and for repairs you can also claim the shipping costs back and forth.

You need to get a estimate from CGC and present that with the claim, along with proof of insurance. Don't be surprised if they ask for the orginal insurance receipt if the seller sent this through a regular post office versus PayPal or USPS label.

Good luck!

I had two slabs that I sold damaged by Canada Post on their way to buyers. One of them had an actual sticker from Canada Post that said, to paraphrase, 'sorry we broke your stuff.' I filed claims on their behalf for FULL stabbing cost ($29 at the time) + shipping back and forth to CGC.

Both claims were paid out in full. All I needed to do was send images of the damage and the packaging [materials] to the claims department. Since it is a small-time claim, I'm sure it would generally be hassle-free. It's worth your while.

Can a non paid member submit books to CGC for reholdering?

Nope, you don't have to be signed up for anything in order to submit reholders.

Call the 800 line (877.NM.COMIC), talk with any of the great help desk folks, and they will explain what to do.

Sorry you are having to go through 8 reholders though.

The online submission form is pretty easy to use apparently, and someone who wasn't a paid up member actually got 10% discount on their submissions.

That's the worst part - watching your stuff go away and never come back. I had a badly cracked slab come in one time. It was insured, so I went to the PO to file a claim. I got my money, but in retrospect, I wish I had just sucked up the cost for re-holdering, as the comic wasn't damaged.

They came from a third party not CGC.

Pain in the arse. Are you near a show where CGC will be setting up? That's probably your best bet, and for ease.
