Pure nostalgia-- WEST COAST AVENGERS #3 cover on Ebay

26 posts in this topic

I love it when long-buried treasures pop up on Ebay:

Hardly a key cover, but definitely hits the right nostalgic notes. Not just for me, either, judging by all the off-Ebay offers the seller is getting:

Thankfully, he is letting it run all the way. He's gotta realize that with all these inquiries, he'll do well to let the auction finish.

Will be interesting to see where this ends up.

I was never really into the Avengers, but just wondering what makes this cover carry $1500 worth of appeal/nostalgia, especially given its condition issues (shrug)

I set my snip at $1k and let the chip fall where they may. We now know where they fell. Do I wish I had won the cover? yes Do I wish I had bid more? no. 1k is all it was worth to me.

Doesn't seem like Bob Hall would have enough fan support to push the numbers that high. But maybe Hawkeye did. I know several collectors that are big fans of secondary characters -- and a lot of them like the guy with the bow and arrow.

The West Coast Avengers was a fun, pleasant little book that ran -- for quite awhile, as I remember. Ten years? Something like that. Long enough, anyway, to build a fan base. This issue was close to the beginning of its run. The teenagers that collected that book twenty-plus years ago are now the adults that have some cash to spend.

The cover image is light, kind of silly, pretty indicative of its time. I'm guessing the seller was happy to get $1500 for it and I understand why the buyer was happy to have it for $1500. Nostalgia trumps condition issues every time.

I finished 2nd at $1500, but really believe this cover is around $800, just got caught up in wanting to win it and didn't figure my 15 second last bid would get beat.

I actually thought this would go higher, given the amount of auction activity (views, questions) along with the nostalgic appeal. Maybe the condition issues scared potential bidders off in the end. If that was the case, then lucky for the winning bidder. The cover can be easily "fixed" in terms of preservation and aesthetics. I learned my lesson with another auction a few years ago. I ended up not bidding due to the various condition issues. It was ultimately won by a dealer (with another dealer as the underbidder) who had it cleaned. It looks great now and if/when it ever becomes available again, it will undoubtedly cost quite a bit more.
