Major Props to JoeyPost

21 posts in this topic

As some of you may know, there was an incident in the recent past where a seller (who will remain unnamed here) sold a number of poorly pressed books without disclosure. The books were squashed, wavy, had waffle marks on the back cover and clearly had been exposed to too much heat... flyaway corners and limp, lifeless covers.

JoeyPost kindly offered -- gratis -- to see what he could do to fix any of the books messed up by the unnamed seller.

So, I took Joey up on his offer and sent him my Avengers 16 that was damaged by the over aggressive press job.

The results were astounding. Joey breathed the life back into this book. The waviness is almost all gone, the waffle marks on the back cover virtually gone, and the cover stock is no longer lifeless and limp. The flyaway corners now lay flat. In hand, the book feels good and has a proper "stiffness" to it ... no longer like a limp rag. (I can only surmise he humidified the book to reinvigorate the dried out paper fibers.) The book is still a bit "flat," but I wouldn't expect to be able to un-ring that bell.

This is the first time I've ever sent books to be only pressed (I've had other resto work done which included pressing.) As many of you know, chances are I would not send in an already high grade book to squeeze out another .2... just not my style. But in this case, careful pressing definately saved a book that was essentially trashed. My Avengers 16 now looks and feels like a high grade copy should. I can take it out of the mylar without the corners curling up.

Major props to Joey on a job well done! :applause:

Do you have a scan of how it appeared before joey's work? I'd be interested to see a comparison.

Here is a pre-fix scan. You can see some of the waviness along the spine edge.

Although, even before the fix, the book looked good in a mylar. Things that don't show up in the scan are the major improvements... corners curling up... a limp floppy feel to the cover.

What do you do if the book stays hard for more than 4 hours???

Joey is A # 1 Joe. Go see him for good time. Much Boom Boom.

Seriously, Joey is a class act through and through, and here is a great example of how proper pressing can enhance and conserve a book after it got the waffle treatment.

Right on! :applause:

Can't say enough good things about Joe! It is an honor to have him (and you) as a friend (worship)
