Is anyone going to Portland Oregon Comic Convention ?

It was a good thing my time off for Sunday got canceled. I have been ill for a few weeks now and it came to a head on Friday/Saturday and hit me hard on Sunday.

I had planned on going to the show and hanging out with boardies for dinner, topped off with a night in Portland - but there was no way I could have made the show. Slept for 12 hours Sunday into Monday, and plan on doing that again or longer tonight. I hate being ill :censored:

I will try to make the show in May being put together by this show.

Well, that was fun!

Greggy and I almost had to stay another night, as I am pretty ill. I had a heck of a time getting out of bed today, but when I did, things went smoothly. We were able to get a late checkout and were actually going to stay, but the hotel was full. Greggy was going to take Tuesday off to accommodate and I really appreciated the gesture, however, I couldn't let that happen and gathered all my strength and carried on! Once we got going, things were good :)

The show was pretty good for me with regards to buying. I bought from only one guy, but did alright. I scored 50 nice SA and early BA books for a good price. The guy had some nice books, but there were no prices and they were just thrown into boxes with no order what-so-ever! But, I took the time and cherry picked what I could. I almost picked up his Daredevil #1, but upon further "advice" from Greggy and Steve (Worldsbestcomics) I passed. I will post some picks in the general thread tomorrow.

It was great meeting Billy Galaxy and Tofer118 (Chris). Greggy and I, met up with Billy, at his shop on Saturday evening and went to dinner. Billy's got a sweet little shop! Anyone in the area should definitely support our fellow boardie! He took us to a nice little Mexican spot and we talked "shop". It was a good dinner. From there, we went on to meet Tofer118 (Chris) at the Red Robin by our hotel for a drink and desert. We talked comics for about an hour and then Greggy and I retired to our room for the night... it was a long day as we left Vancouver at 5AM to head to Eugene for the original art exhibit; which was a very nice exhibit :cloud9: There were no cameras allowed, but me being the rebel that I am, I snapped a shot of each and every piece on display. Anyone interested in seeing something, drop me a PM and I will email pics. I am going to try and do a "report" tomorrow, time permitting. Although, I guess you can call this a report!

Unfortunately, due to the scheduling "issues", we didn't make the forum dinner. However, we had a mini dinner at Applebees "AFTER" the show with Greggy, Steve (worldsbest), Rebbecca (Steve's friend) and myself. We spent a couple of hours BSing and had a good laugh. It was good to see Steve again. We then went back to the hotel and stopped into Allan's (aarvark88) room to sign the Nik cell. We all showed off our day's purchases and talked for a while. We went back to our room and I started removing all of the stickers from my purchases. Allan stopped in and we went through all of the pics from Eugene. Allan's got quite the comic knowledge! Called it a night and "tried" to sleep...

We left the room today around 2 and headed to Excalibur Comics. A great shop! An ACTUAL COMIC shop! Not one of these "fronts" where there are a couple of boxes hidden behind the rows of tables for the latest card game fad! We spent a couple of hours there and I managed to score a super sweet, Greggy approved, Flash #200. Apart from a minor corner crease on the upper back cover, it is absolutely stunning. I also grabbed a Batman Adventures #12. From there we headed to Costco to take advantage of some tax free shopping. After a couple of hours, we loaded up the car and hit the road. The drive was pretty much event free; except for nearly getting us killed at one point! We were cruising along at about 90 miles an hour when all of a sudden there was a work truck stopped in our lane! No signage, nothing... it was a close call doh! The weather was pretty bad and there was quite a bit of hydro planing. We then stopped in Tulalip, for a late dinner at the casino's buffet... yum! Filled up the gas tank and headed for the border. Did some duty free shopping and were talked into getting more than we wanted by the sales staff. When we hit the border and declared our haul, we were told to go in to pay our dues. It just so happened that the border guard who was tallying up our bill, was a comic collector and used to be the guy in charge of screening all of the "naughty" comics that came into the country. That got me a little worried as I had a receipt for $100 and obviously a lot more value! I thought I was done for if he had gone to look at our haul! He would have seen the $50 books and thought I was trying to pull a fast one with a phony receipt... I just got a really good deal!!! :gossip:

So there you have it! The adventures of Johnny G and Greggy loose in the Oregon wild :)

Again, it was great to see everyone and am sorry I didn't get a chance to meet others.

I will try to post pics later today... I need a good day's sleep!

Here is a short summary of my road trip from Vancouver, BC down south to Portland, OR con.

Stopped at Wal-mart where you can reload your rifle with bullets and buy vino at a discount. 1 stop shopping at its best:

Made a quick stop at the excellent Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA to get some culture. This is an overhead glass display:

Background houses the Museum of Glass which sits over the major I-5 Hwy that connects all the way down to Tijuana, Mexico.

After visiting a Half Price Bookstore in Tacoma, WA, we visited the huge Olympic Comics shop in Lacey, WA. No vintage comics but they had a wall full of action figures and imported toys plus a staff owned Bat-mobile. From left to right are geeks from Canada: B and G.

The better Excalibur Comics in Portland, OR has at least 3 times the runs of back issues as Olympic:

Got into the con during dealer set up thanks to Harley. Took some quick pics of the movie memorabilia for sale:

Steve Wyatt of Super-con always sets up with at least 5 dealers tables. He has a deep inventory of SA DC mid-grade that I collect. Part of his choice wall display:

Sorry, the lighting was not very bright at this coliseum with concrete floors.

Wyatt was set up diagonally across from Harley who only brought about 12 boxes of higher grade GA, SA with him:

Left the con at 2:15 p.m. Sunday Nov. 15/09 to rush to the mini-forum Izzy's late lunch with Mike, Dan, Danny and 3 geeks from Canada. Signed Nik's cel in my native tongue (Chinese). His highness, greggy, was too busy digging for deals back at the con.

Monday morning, I enjoyed a wonderful buffet breakfast at the Doubletree hotel thanks to Johnny G who slept in late and gave me his extra coupon. greggy came down to chat with us before we departed to OMSI to see the diesel sub.

Drove north to visit Battlegear in Olympia (the capital(?) of WA. state). He specializes in 1/6 scale male military uniforms and accessories that he gets designed by the sweat shops in China and imports to the USA for resale. Very hi-quality:

Some of my loot. Bought 3 men's adventure 1950s mags from David Smith who unfortunately had his home north of Seattle, WA burglarized and some choice early pulps stolen:

Added to my SA DC collection including the relatively scarce Mystery in Space #88 green cover.

Was dumping rain on the hwy so stopped off at a comicshop near University of Seattle who just happened to be having a 1/2 off sale. House of Comics Marc these are the Dennis the Menaces I already have including the SA 1st app. of his sidekick Joey in Dennis #31 (Pine):

greggy: Yes, we did have a quality dinner at the Tulalip Casino buffet. I love their prime rib, salmon, pasta and Oriental dishes plus soup and dessert:

Overall, I well balanced comicon experience, as my buddy lined up to get 3 or 4 quality sketches from the Portland artists that usually don't drive north to the bigger 2 day Emerald Ciy con in Seattle, WA. Hopefully, Portland will indeed expand into a 2 day Super-con for May, 2010. :whee:
