Welcome to the first ever Survivor Series for Silver Age DC Superhero comics!

 

Previously, in multiple threads, I had asked people to nominate their favorite Silver Age DC superhero comic covers. I've taken every one of those covers and included them here in this post. There are a total of 199 covers that we are starting with. I have not allowed any covers from 1970 or later. Please don't be upset at me for not including your favorite cover, you had your chance when we had the nomination threads.

The poll is at the bottom of this post.

 

The goal is to determine the greatest Silver Age DC Superhero cover of all time. We will be voting off our 39 least favorite covers from the list provided.

 

Let's have lots of chit chat as the rounds progress.

 

This is an 11-round marathon. These rounds will last 2 days each. We'll vote off 39 in round 1, 30 in round 2, 30 in round 3, 30 in round 4, 30 in round 5, 20 in round 6, 10 in round 7, 5 in round 8, 2 in round 9, 1 in round 10, and then the final showdown to crown our champion.

My favourite DC cover artist from the Silver Age period is Joe Kubert, and all of my key covers have been nominated.

 

There were many large blocks of mediocre covers that I would have wanted to vote off first time out, and I found the exercise of trimming my list down to the worst 39 to be quite challenging.

My picks are in. I scattered my votes around to all the titles since there are great covers within each title.

This first round initially felt like shooting fish in a barrel (bye-bye pre-New Look Detectives), but as others said, it was surprisingly difficult getting to 39. The next round should start to get interesting.

Personally I'm surprised how many votes there are against Adventure 369. It is an Adams after all...

 

And what's with the hate for those Cardy Aquamans?

i voted for a couple of the Aquamans, but only because the two most striking Aquaman covers didn't get on the list, which is totally my fault.

 

it really doesn't matter though, since if any cover other than Showcase 79 wins, it will lower my already pretty low estimation of this community's senses of design and aesthetic

I had a bit of the same problem as I did with the EC contest. I'm not overly familiar with the covers, and looking at the thumbnails may not do the covers justice. I didn't click on any of the thumbnails this round, as it's quite time-consuming, but I will probably start doing that for the top 100.

 

Talk about time-consuming! Putting this freaking disaster together has been quite an effort.

 

Sorry once again to the folks that didn't get their favorites in there. I had hoped for a better response from the 3 nomination threads that were held. That being said 199 nominations is still a good turnout.

 

Many people have mentioned that the DC superhero comics in the silver age really didn't have many good covers. I don't find that to be true at all. Looking at this contest, I see quite a few decent covers. The main problem is the vast number of bad covers that came out and that is probably what is influencing people's opinions. I don't know....maybe. :shrug:

Remember, we're choosing which covers to vote off. So it's not too surprising that Anthro #1 is one of the top vote getters to be banished. How it got nominated in the first place is another question.
