Every time I spend an unglamorous day with Borock my head hurts and I walk crooked.

At least this guy is getting paid for it.

Earlier this week I agreed to accompany Steve B to view an original owner collection. He needed transportation and some grunt work and naturally I could not refuse.

Let me tell you, if you have visions of Steve B flitting about the country, glancing at books and flitting back with s smile and a chuckle you have the wrong image. This was work.

I picked him up from his hotel at about 9:30AM. About a half hour later we were at our destination. Met with a very nice man who had been collecting for many years. Steve spent considerable time talking about various aspects of submitting the collection for auction. Then he started going through the books with the client, pointing out both positives and negatives in a very direct and honest way.

Next he went through the books on-site with his laptop at hand. (Many more were off-site). Taking each one from the box, checking it for condition, resto etc. Recording each one and estimating grade. Next he went through them again estimating a general "value". By this time we took a break for lunch at a local restaraunt. Then back to the main site for a once-over.

Next we drive several miles to another site, with the first batch of books in tow. Many many more books were stored there. Lots of them. Steve went through each one again.

Next stop the local staples to buy boxes, packing tape and bubble wrap. Back to the second site to sort, wrap and pack the books. Load them in the car. Then hit Fedex to get the boxes shipped.

After leaving Fedex it was time to go back home. We arrived in San Francisco a bit after 9:00PM. I was wiped. I was expecting glamour. Yes, many of the books were very cool. But overall we spent almost 12 hours from start to finish, and maybe 1/3 of that time was actually involved with examining the books themselves. Hard to tell where the time went but it went!

We finished up with a quick late meal. I hit the hay relatively early for me, with my body a bit sore and my barin a bit soggy.

Let me tell you, Steve's world is really not all glamor and glitz!

I could have sworn I saw him on the red carpet at the academy awards last year.

Eh, sounds glam and glitzy to me.

And for once in his life Dr Watson is right ( :baiting:) we need some pics!

Steve sent me this from his cell phone when they arrived to look at the collection.

Michael actually looks good without his beard.

Who are you?

I am your worst nightmare. I am the customer who comes on a press run and says "turn up the yellow" here 17 times and then says "turn down the yellow here (at the same place) 17 times and then says "OK." The customer who says to shift the registration on the 4th black to the left, to the left, to the left, to the left and then says shift the registration on the 4th black to the right, to the right, to the right, to the right and then says "OK".

And ends the night with "Who's buying?"

I can't believe the guy on the left went on to be a star on ER.

I totally forgot about that role.

Stevie is actually a good friend and one of the most straight forward people I know when it comes to comic deals.

Looking back this post could have been misconstrued.

This is interesting. Other than the boxing up and shipping them to Heritage, Steve has been buying collections like this for years. It's how it's done. You check through everything, talk value, instill confidence in the seller and consummate the deal.

Certainly nothing glamorous about it. It's work.

Thanks Moondog. That was the crux of my post and why I used "unglamorous" in the subject. I don't think many folks got that. :(

It IS work.

I think the "out of context" comment was less about comic deals and more about you guys making the beast with two backs

Just noticed this. Hikeeba was right, I wasn't commenting at all about a comic deal, just trying to make a funny. :tonofbricks:
