Oh Man by Briggs Published 1919

Great book and certainly a precursor to the comic books of today. This example is begining to separate from its spine. It's 90 years old folks. If someone is in the binderery trade or knows someone who is, perhaps they can save this book. Still the pages are in great shape and worth the read. This is printed using a second color which is a flesh tone. A great work to be treasured and admired.

Bringing Up Father by Geo McManus

One of the the fathers of comic book art, Geo Mc Manus had a great art deco style and his line work was excellent. Bringing Up Father was his most famous subject and was very popular in it's day. This book was published in 1921 and has seen better days. From the fith Series by Cupples and Leon out of New York. Cupples and Leon created this format which would lead us to the comics we read today. This book is from the frontier of comics and is 89 years old. A great read.

Caricature: The Wit and Humor of a Nation in Picture, Song, and Story, Illustrated by America's Greatest Artists Special Edition: 1908

I can't express how awesome this book is. Every page, and there are a lot of them, is crammed with cartoon, drawings and comic strips. The paper stock they used is the old coated heavy weight paper so the book has a feel to it.

The thing that stands out most for me is that there are comic strips similar to a Sunday Page by Montgomery Flagg one of americas most prolific illustrators and the artist who did the "Uncle Sam Wants You" poster. I have never before or ever since seen or heard about any comic strip work done by Flagg. I think this is a revelation of sorts, that someone of Flaggs notoriety was involved in comics. Certianly not mentioned in any of the reference books I've ever read.

Unfortunately, this book also suffers from spine separation and needs the work of a binder person. This is an incredible book and I have others with this title, but none exclusively dedicated to this subject which strikes close to the comic field. I have looked.

The last five posts or so might prompt some of you to say "these aren't comic books, what are they doing here?" To that my answer is yes they are comic books. Or at least comic book related. Or to be specific, American comic book related.

These items go back to a time when comics as we know them didn't exist. These books are what allow us to be here today reading and enjoying the different aspects of this medium. The fist two examples can be considered comic books. Just very early examples that most of us aren't familiar with.
