Karl Urban Confirmed For Judge Dredd

And he will NOT remove his helmet

Source: Exclusive

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Karl Urban has been confirmed for the leading role in Judge Dredd by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of the new film. Urban had been rumoured for the role already, but in a Movie-Con Q&A this evening the pair confirmed that he has been cast for the film, shooting in South Africa soon.

“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago," said Macdonald. "Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."

"There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision."

Karl Urban to don helmet for 'Judge Dredd'

With all the attention focused on Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables,” one noteworthy bit of development occurred this past weekend on a remake of movie that was a Stallone vehicle back in the 1990s.

Karl Urban (pictured), who last played Bones McCoy in “Star Trek,” has come on board to play the title character of “Judge Dredd,” based on the British comic book character.

Urban’s deal officially closed yesterday. The comic is set in a future where police act as judge, jury and executioner. Urban will play Joe Dredd, the creme de la creme of the elite police corps.

The character is almost always seen wearing a helmet-mask and the producers have said Urban will be hatted through most of the movie.

Pete Travis, who directed “Vantage Point,” is helming the feature, which is being financed and produced by Andrew MacDonald, a frequent collaborator of Danny Boyle and his DNA Films. Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global are also financing and producing.

Several studios are lining up to ask “Dredd” to the dance but the production team wants to line up the female lead before signing any distribution deal.

So Dredd now has the attention of the Studios now? That can only mean good things :wishluck: I don't mind it being Dark & Gritty, but I think the R rating will hurt it to a degree at the B.O.(I really hope I'm wrong, but I just don't want to see this becoming the second DREDD movie to go up in flames) :ohnoez:

Thought I'd also share this from judgedreddmovienews.com

Dreddhead -script Report

Plot details have emerged over the past week, but not from the point of view of a Dredd fan. Until now...

Is any date given for the story? No.

Who is the Chief Judge? A woman in her 50s. She's not named.

Is the Lawmaster used in combat? Yes, but only the cannons are used.

Are there scenes away from the block? A couple on the streets, and one at the Halls of Justice

Do we see inside the Halls of Justice and/or Academy of Law? Just one room of the HOJ. The Academy of Law is just called "The Academy" by a character, but we never see it, or any Rookies or Cadets.

Does the SLO-MO drug feature heavily? It's there pretty much throughout.

Does Dredd's helmet become damaged? No. He never loses any of it, but we start with him suiting up, so his head is in shadow when he puts it on.

Do they take the perp they've busted with them, and if so is s/he potentially irritating? Yes, and definately NO... at least as it's written. It's a "he" named Kay.

Is Whitey Logan mentioned? No.

Does PSI Division exist yet? Probably not.

Do any other characters from the strip show up? No.

Anything else stick out about the -script? Anderson was orphaned at seven, and was nine when she went to the Academy. She uses PSI Probes a couple of times. She has no helmet so when they need respirators they pull them out of their utility belts. The helmet mike on a stick is back. The Lawgiver is voice activated, and fires the same kinds of ammo as in the comic. The silencer slides out of the gun.

Sternhammer Block, Tom Frame Block, and Wagner Drive are mentioned. A guy has a Judge Death tattoo on his chest..The F-word is used instead of future swearing. Resyk is mentioned. Often the writer has characters using the Britishism "Tanoy" instead of P.A. system. There are corrupt Judges in the story. Justice Department is mentioned by name. Stumm Grenades are used, and Stub Gun-like machine guns. Heaps of gore and destruction. Ma Ma may be a Fattie, but it's not made explicit. The city doesn't really come alive on the page. It's all focused on the one block, and the citizens are all pretty normal.

++NOTES++

In the comic strip, Anderson killed her abusive father at age three, and entered the Academy of law at age five, spending the next fifteen years there, but she wasn't aware of her own troubled past until much later.

PSI Probes are a form of telepathy where the subject's mindscape is invaded

Wulf Sternhammer is a character in the long-running Strontium Dog strip also created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. The late Tom Frame was a letterer and colourist, and worked on hundreds of Dredd and Dog strips along with many other strips over the course of his long career.

The Chief Judge at the time of Anderson's graduation was male: Griffin. The first female Chief Judge was McGruder, who took office two years after the first appearance of Judge Death.

Resyk is where corpses are broken down into "107 useful constituents".

Stumm (Grenade) Gas is much like CS Gas

Stub Guns are high-powered lasers that cut through concrete like it's butter

Fatties are preposterously obese people.

Respirators are part of the helmet crest, being pulled down over the mouth. They can also be small devices carried in the utility belt.

Whitey Logan was a criminal in the first published Dredd strip.

Even if it was Keith Urban, It would still be a better choice than Sly (I am too big of a star to wear a helmet) Stallone....as long as he wears the helmet 100% of the time and doesn't have Dredd singing country tunes that is.

I enjoyed him in Pathfinder, but his biggest role is Eomer, son of the king of Rohan banished by Wormtongue/Saruman, in Lord of the Rings. Not a lot of speaking parts, but he had an impressive screen presence nonetheless. (thumbs u
