Amazing Spider-man #300 - UPC or Spidey-Head - Let's count!

46 posts in this topic

Just trying to get an estimate on the ratios...

For owners of Amazing Spider-man #300...

Post with the number of copies of Amazing Spider-man #300 that you own,

and whether your copy has the Spidey-head or the UPC Code on the front cover.

If CGC graded, post the grade as well.

Thanks! (thumbs u

P.S. If your copy of Amazing Spider-man #300 is chromium... sorry, that's a Modern Age reprint,

and we're specifically in the Copper Age section here.

Over the years I've owned several copies.

Spidey - 6... 4 from my LCS when they came out, 2 in other purchases

UPC - 5... 1 in my current collection, 4 from past purchases

By far the Spidey-Head is going to be the most common.

I would think so too but recently (the past 5 years) the vast majority I've picked up in collections have been UPC. I wonder if most Spidey heads are just locked away in people's hoards.

I think a more interesting thing to look at is which version has more rag-edge.

No it's not.

In very early 1988, people were still buying scads of books off newsstands.

I'd say the surviving to printed ratio is very, very high, and the newsstand vs. Direct is about 1:1 or 1:1.5

Raw copies on Ebay (as of 10/10/2010): 52 Spidey-Head, 31 UPC

CGC graded copies on Ebay: 44 Spidey-Head, 8 UPC

CURRENT EBAY TOTALS: 96 Spidey-Head, 39 UPC

I guess it's safe to say that the UPC copies are less likely to get slabbed...

probably because they're in the hands of newsstand buyers (generally heavy readers, not bag & boarders)

rather than comic shop buyers/dealers/serious-slabbers-and-sellers.

I'd say that's a safe assumption to make.

Which one is more valuable? hm

I don't think there's been much difference in the market so far, but it looks like a high grade UPC

might (eventually) sell for more than the same grade in Spidey-Head.

That could possibly start a trend... ASM 300 is a big enough book to drive a shift

(if there's ever going to be a shift) toward newsstand editions of copper/modern editions.

Generally speaking... direct editions get in the hands of serious collectors who take care of them.

Newsstand editions had dwindling numbers by the start of the modern age,

often got damaged in the store racks, and were less-protected by (casual) buyers.

That's not to say that newsstand books are rare... because they're not.

They may be "tougher in high grade" than direct editions.

CGC does not distinguish between the two editions for most comics.

Sure, one copy each and specs were buying cases from the LCS.

I have absolutely no doubt that in 1988 Direct issues of ASM 300 outsold Newsstand, but also that high-grade surviving DM copies (which is what we're talking about here on the CGC forums) far outnumber them.

A better example of this is ASM 194, which not only had a pile of Direct copies, but was also bundled in a 3-pack that is still available from warehouse finds.

That issue should definitely be worth far in with a UPC, and if this trend catches on, might turn out to be near worthless with a Spidey head.

Mine has a UPC. Not surprising given that it came out of general store that sold comics on the side along with magazines, etc. The owner of the store decided to tuck comics away becaus he thought they were "collectible." problem is, he didn't have a clue how to do it, so the comics didn't all stay in such great shape. of course, some of them are nice and near minty, still, but as luck would have it the 300 got dinged up, the 252 was put in a bag and the cover creased in the process. the secret wars 8 is pretty nice though.
