Rule #1 of buying any collectible. Whoever makes the first offer loses the battle.

If you're a potential buyer, too low an offer is insulting, too high and you've screwed yourself by overpaying. Flip that for sellers. It seems like you almost never hit a fair price with the first offer, regardless of who makes it...

Watch a few episodes of Pawn Stars and you'll see it in action. The shop never makes the first offer and the mark customer always gives their top asking price first. This is followed by a laugh and an offer of 10%-50% of that number. They usually end up at <50% of the original asking price, even if that price was pretty reasonable. The times where someone throws out a real high-ball offer Rick (the owner) laughs and passes on the whole deal.
