As seanfingh mentioned earlier confusion is only one of the actions in protecting ones trademark and brand identity. A dilution claim for the WWF trademark would be equally, if not more important, and if the rightful owner wants you to drop the use of their name, you either comply or face the penalties of infringement. I'm certain the legality aspects coupled with the bad publicity and financial burden that would have surrounded the WWE if they decided to drag the dispute out was good enough reason for them to make the (brand and domain) name switch.
