McFarlane ASM # 300 Cover Sold Privately

54 posts in this topic

My LCS near Vancouver, BC had the ASM #300 cover OA aggressively priced at about $1,100 Cdn framed when it came out. Too much for a cover that is mostly stat. The OA was personalized to his comic shop so there should still be white out to cover the personalization.

Miller Dark Knight OA pages were again offered at aggressive (for the time) double Miller DD OA pages at SDCC for $800-1,200 range. I turned my nose up at those Krazy prices that may have been the biggest mistake of my collecting life. :frustrated:

We all have "oh mess why did I pass that up/not buy that" stories from the art world. Anybody want Byrne X-Men covers? I had six. Anybody want Adams Batman covers? I had four. Anybody want Michael Golden Micronauts covers? I had three. Anybody want Cockrum X-Men pages? I had 25 or so. On and on and on. Oh well.

Sounds like yours are worst than most! :o:cry:

i remember years ago my lcs in niagara falls had 1 page on the walls, the last page of smiderman 299, so the 1st appearance of venom. it was 400 if i remember correctly. thinking about it now, i wonder how it found its way to niagara falls....or if it was real

That same fella brought it to a large Toronto convention in the early '90s where Todd made an appearance and the fella wanted $800 for it. It was a stunning splash and even though I wasn't collecting OA then, I was immediately drawn to it, like a moth to a flame. Just an incredible piece of art, but already spent my money on an AF15 and an ASM 1 at that show. Stupid, stupid comics! :makepoint:

According to a post on CAF, collector Tom Fish has reportedly sold the original ASM # 300 cover art by McFarlane to a European collector for six figures.

Can Tom or anyone else confirm the sale and the amount?

Thanks

Cheers!

N.

I thought I read an article a while back that he sold it to a collector in China for $125K. If so, I wonder if he regrets letting it go the way he's been vacuuming up other key Spidey pieces of late.

Actually, I found the article:

So, maybe that might give context to the possibility of speculating... what recently published original artwork that is available today, might be the highly sought after valued artwork of 10 or 20 years from now?

20 years from now, I would only put money on James Jean published cover paintings (e.g. Fables). Looking back 20 years, hot artists don't always stay hot like Rob Liefeld, Keith Giffen, etc. :gossip:

Mcfarlane is different than Liefeld and Keith Griffen. He was a different kind of hot since he really made an impact on Spider-man. When through out 3-4 guys names of artists who worked on spider-man over the years,Mcfarlane's name will usually come up. He didn't have "prefect anatomy" or "perfect storytelling" but at the time he was the hottest thing since the invention of the wheel.

I think Todd was an an extension of what John Byrne and george Perez so his work is sort of grounded in American comics tradition and with the nostalgic nature of comicbooks that ages much better.

What Rob did ended up being VERY specific to teenage life of that era. In my opinion, had there been substance in storytelling behind that art I don't think people would be so down on his stuff today.

on the asm 300 cover..spiderman is 100% drawn art... if spiderman were stat the cover would be worth a grand or so as PRODUCTION ART!

The asm 300 is more iconic than A LOT of other asm covers out there...its not a bad piece at all...andthat pose is pretty iconic!
