I don't know about this. Doom's motivation has to stem from jealousy of Reed and/or blaming Reed for the accident that leaves him scarred.

 

I thought it was fairly obvious that Doom's rage towards Reed could only be the result of Reed spurning Doom's advances during their college days, so the "jilted lover" angle makes sense. Why expend so much time money and brainpower to merely humiliate Reed Richards, unless it's payback for a deeply felt humiliation on Doom's end, and perhaps the shame Doom feels for succumbing to his emotions.
