I was planning on just collecting the Brundage covers. You're ruining that for me :ohnoez:

I started with the goal of getting the Conan issues. Then the Brundage covers. Then the St. John covers. Then all the Howard stories. Then the Lovecrafts. Now look where I am! :whee:

WEIRD TALES

Volume 20, Number 5

November, 1932

Cover by J. Allen St. John

And we're into the St. John covers! This one illustrates The Buccaneers of Venus by Otis Adelbert Kline. The similarities between Kline's Venus stories and Burroughs' John Carter of Mars stories) and the subsequent stories by Burroughs set on Venus and by Kline set on Mars) has led to speculation that the two authors were feuding.

The true gem of this issue, however, is Robert E. Howard's Worms of the Earth. The story is one of Howard's best. It's a Bran Mak Morn story, and is also part of the Cthulhu mythos.

WEIRD TALES

Volume 20, Number 6

December, 1932

Cover by J. Allen St. John

This is the big one, the 1st appearance of Conan the Barbarian. Howard's first Conan story, The Phoenix on the Sword, was a re-written, unsold King Kull story.

If only Conan had been on the cover instead of a second straight Buccaneers of Venus one. Still, it's a nice St. John cover.

Appropriately posted on the heels of the news that Arnold will be reprising his role as Conan. Still trying to metabolize that news.

The potential for a King Conan film to be awesome is there. Unfortunately, the odds of it being pulled off are low. But I'll see it regardless. (thumbs u

WEIRD TALES

Volume 21, Number 2

February, 1933

Cover by J. Allen St. John

Weird Tales editor Farnsworth Wright must have had a lot of faith in Kline's Buccaneers of Venus. He commissioned St. John to do four covers for the story. This is the fourth of the series.

Contains a reprinted H.P. Lovecraft story, The Cats of Ulthar, that was originally written in 1920.

Also features a Cthulhu mythos story, The Fire Vampires, by Donald Wandrei.

Jeez, my copy is beat. I need to upgrade this one. doh!

WEIRD TALES

Brundage covers get all the attention nowadays, but in my opinion this beautiful St. John cover is one of the finest pulp covers ever created.

Jack Williamson's Golden Blood serial starts in this issue.

Also contains the poem Autumn by Robert E. Howard.

I like the Dr. Satan cover. Do you have two copies of this one?

Hi Bruce! Yes, the one I sold you was an extra copy. It's going out in the mail today.

Got it Todd. I'll stick Dr. Satan in the box with the Children of the Bat if I can find it.

WEIRD TALES

Volume 22, Number 1

July, 1933

Cover by Margaret Brundage.

This one actually features three Cthulhu mythos tales!

H.P. Lovecraft leads the way with Dreams in the Witch House.

Lovecraft also wrote a second mythos story for this issue, The Horror in the Museum, but published it under a pen-name, Hazel Heald.

And Clark Ashton Smith contributes Ubbo-Sathla to the expanding mythos.

If that wasn't enough, there's also a Robert E. Howard (non-mythos) short story, The Man on the Ground.
