Wow!!!! congrats Michael. Those are just gorgeous books. That DM 19 is really sharp. Are these raw copies that you had and then submitted?

Amazing pair of books! Love them both. No question that a Venus #19 is scarcer than a css 22 in all grades.

Any guess where Strange Tales 28 stacks up compared to Venus 19 and CSS 22 on the scarcity scale.

I can't seem to locate a Strange Tales 28 - but there are probably a dozen CSS 22 in varying grades for sale on ebay.

I should have noted that there are only 2 Strange Tales 28 on the census.

I'd say between the two on the scarcity scale. Definitely tougher than css 22, & a little easier than Venus 19. In the last 5 years I've had 3 copies, upgrading each time to my current vg/f, which I'm happy with. Keep searching & you'll get one, no guarantees if you want vf or better though!

Speaking from experience, Strange Tales 28 seems to be tougher than Venus 19, especially above Fine. Just an impossible book to find in grade. :P

Any guess on the reason it is so scarce and tough to find in a fine grade?

Are people just holding them or are there truly very few left and if so why is that the case when you can find nearly any other Strange Tales surrounding it fairly easily.

Where did you come across your copies over the last five years?

eBay for all 3, but the first two were beaters. First one I returned due to excessive tape; second one I found was a really beat but complete good -- traded it to Ted at Superworld last year for another book, as I'd since found the VG/F I've kept. :)

That's interesting, as I'd have called Venus 19 tougher based on my experience.

One thing that always seems to happen, after I finally got my high grade copy of Mysterious Adventures #21, it seemed like the next few cons had an abundance of them in various grades. :)

Congrats on that beautiful Venus! Is this now a top census book?

If memory serves, out of #17-#19, the top census is a lone #19 9.0 and the other two have 8.5 as highest grade. I've not delved deeper, but it would indicate that anyone who comes across or owns a true near mint copy of any of these three...well, I leave it to your imagination!

Strange in a way, that it is the #19 which has the highest graded copy as it is surely the toughest of the three to find in any grade, whereas the other two are only truly scarce in higher grades I'd say!

Thanks Adam - yes, both were part of an OO collection sold by Jim Payette years ago. I happened to phone him one day and asked if he had a Dark Mysteries #19 and he said, "Yes, I'm looking at one right now." I said, "What grade is it?" And he replied, "looks about near mint." I asked how much he wanted for it, but out of consideration for you and others I wont say how cheaply I got it.

I then proceeded to ask, "Venus #19? Chilling Tales #16? Tormented #1? Menace #4?"

Plus a couple of others I had at the top of my wants list at the time. He had them all. I was very poor at the time, or I'd have asked about other books.

The Chilling Tales and the Tormented are still with me, the others long gone, and the pair are currently being graded. I don't think they will do quite as well, but we will see!

Nice stuff. Those who would take a high grade css 22 over a Venus 19 in high grade are welcome to their choice, but css 22 is so much easier a book - going back to before it got hot. I have two copies of css 22 - zero of Venus 19 - so that probably colors my opinion. :)
