Hi everyone. "The Martin Goodman Exhibit" debuts tonight at our "Secret History of Marvel Comics" Book Release Event w/ Al Jaffee & Stan Goldberg.

The event starts at 7pm, hosted by the Society Of Illustrators (at 128 E 63rd St., between Park & Lexington Ave). See pics of the mayhem involved in packing up a zillion ultra-rare publications from Marvel Comics founder, Martin Goodman...

Hey, there's Stan Lee smoking a pipe in 1947 on the cover of "Writer's Digest". And there's Marilyn Monroe kissing Joe DiMaggio on the cover of "Sensation" (Jan '55). And on it goes...

Hi everyone. A limited number of signed copies of "Secret History Of Marvel Comics" & "Impossible Tales: The Steve Ditko Archives v4" are available on a first-come, first serve basis (still weeks before it hits stores).

Michael and I will sign the former, and include one of the signed, tipped-in plates (featuring Stan Lee's visage from 1947) from last night's NYC event too. (Only 100 made.) If you purchase the Ditko Archives, you'll also get a signed, tipped-in plate from me.

Two ways you can get them: if you're coming to the NYC Con today, I can bring them with me (will be there around 1pm; email me at ditko37@rogers.com). Otherwise, we'll mail them out to you this week. Cost is $40 per book. If we ship them, please add another $5.

Same goes for the not-released-until-November "Impossible Tales: The Steve Ditko Archives vol. 4".

Also, I'll extend my special from last night's event on my earlier books: 50% off (the $40 cover price - i.e., $20) for:

Steve Ditko Archives vol. 2

Steve Ditko Archives vol. 3

Strange & Stranger: The World of Steve Ditko

Fire & Water: Bill Everett

Amazing Mysteries: The Bill Everett Archives vol. 1

I also have ONE copy of the out-of-print "Strange Suspense: The Steve Ditko Archives vol. 1" and it is available for $50.

Hi everyone. Thanks to all those who came out to our Secret History Of Marvel Comics event in NYC last Saturday. One unique aspect of the event at the Society Of Illustrators was "The Martin Goodman Exhibit" that was on display downstairs. Click on this link...

...to watch a short video on the Exhibit (found on our book's YouTube channel), which features many of the publications in the book. My co-author, Michael J. Vassallo, narrates us through the 1930s to the 1950s, showing off various pulps, magazines, bed sheets, digests and so many more formats, all from his collection. Covers feature such prominent pop culture figures such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Gleason and, of course, Stan Lee, but see for yourself.

During our dinner before the Secret History Of Marvel Comics event last Saturday in NYC, here's eight minutes on video of Mad Magazine artist Al Jaffee talking about: Will Eisner, Marvel/Timely Comics, Chad Grothkopf, Stan Lee, Syd Shores, bigfoot cartooning, Bonnie & Clyde, Mike Sekowsky and Steve Ditko needing Photoshop...

Did your comic-book store get copies of the book yesterday? Some did, and some of you are waiting until Amazon.com ships on November 16. But if you want a quick video read-through of the book, check out the book's YouTube page...

http://secrethistoryofmarvelcomics.blogspot.ca/2013/10/video-read-through-of-book.html

You can also see a ten-part video series on the making of the book, plus more exclusive video content, such as "The Martin Goodman Exhibit" and footage of the New York City Book Release Event on October 12, 2013. Read on, Brothers-From-Other-Comic-Mothers...

Thanks,

Just finished going through the first half of this book, and all I can say is (worship) !

So much history in here, and those pulp illustrations. Exquisite!

What a labor of love you've created here!

I hope this will have more of the early-SA and BA (or even CA) history, rather than the usual strategy of writing a few chapters and then jumping straight to 1990 and the speculator/bankruptcy/etc. crapola.

I've read Marvel books that had more about Jemas than Kirby. :tonofbricks:

Wait a sec, I just checked out that video read and it seems more like "The Secret History of Timely/Goodman Magazines" than Marvel???

Is there any Marvel Comics content, or does this just tell the "Pre-Marvel" tale??

This book is an exhaustive review of all things published by Martin Goodman, magazines, paperbacks, pulps and comics, and the evolution of those media through the years leading up to the creation of the Marvel universe in the 60s.

Granted I'm not through the entire book yet, but I don't think this book has what you might be looking for. Sounds like The Untold Story of Marvel Comics would be better suited for you.

I hope it includes a lot of Golden Age and Atomic Age information. I started reading Marvel Comics: The Untold Story a year or so ago, and I thought it jumped to the Silver Age way too quickly.

So it's really the Secret History of Timely/Goodman Magazines then?

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I like to know going in that it has nothing to do with Marvel Comics. I really have no interest in Timely or Goodman pre-Marvel.

And I have read every Marvel-based book so far, including Untold History of Marvel Comics (which sucks, since it jumps right by the SA and puts way too much emphasis on the recent events).

Well then, now you know to skip it.

Yep, though I do hope the Timely/Mag/Pulp fans get a good read out of it.

I'm not a collector of that material, but man was it cool to see this material assembled in this format. Page after page of full color covers and interiors by some of the greatest Marvel Comics artists, Kirby, Simon, Shores, Shomberg, Everett, etc., etc., very little of which I had ever seen before.
