A number of other paintings were sold or traded to go up in terms of quality. There is the possibility of filming his CB statute collection as well.

The website itself is being redone…into the 2014….all the videos should be available down the road….In meantime does anybody else on the boards own a carl barks disney painting??? lets see it….

The Barks paintings are delightful. I used to enjoy seeing a selection of the originals pop up for sale in various Russ Cochran auctions over the years.

I imagine the paintings would look stunning 'in the flesh'. (worship)

On the subject of Barks art, and otherwise totally unrelated, at least two counterfeit Four Color covers have surfaced over the past year. I really hate to get dragged into stuff like this, but, since someone appears to have lost $5,000 on the latest, I felt that I had to say something publicly. You can see one of them below. Note that I have no reason to believe that the seller didn't sell it in good faith.

The original art for this cover is indeed known to exist, but Steve Geppi had Barks color it in the mid 1990s. It is shown briefly about 10 seconds into the YouTube video below. Bruce Hamilton had Barks color another original cover in the same style; I bought the latter from Heritage in 2006.

I knew these fake covers where out there, but I totally missed that ebay auction!! I just emailed the seller to get more info. What was the other 4color cover that was sold or attempted to be sold this year? I think it is important to keep this info public so that the parties that be don't just wait a decade and try to sell them all over again.

I see there was an  new article in the CB newsletter about the taping of  the collection. Since that time, Theo added to the collection the CB painting of the "Golden Helmet" full oil that was acquired either thru one of the major art auction houses a year ago or more, I think he sold the jumping in the money drawing but still has the full oil painting which was obtained from HA at a record price.

It appears in the comic link auction, that Theo is selling one of his paintings "terror on the river" on comic link auction, its a great painting after he acquired the  original Tales of the Crypt paperback cover from CL in a recent auction.  Terror on the river is a great piece as I have seen it many times in person.

sold for 44K plus possible BP the bid was 44K on CL

Is this good or bad?  I thought these things usually sold for more, but, they're not something I track very closely.

The monster is nicely rendered but the ducks have their backs facing and are a bit awkward.    I'd say at expectations.

agreed, one of the lesser paintings because of duck size

good point.    And checking out the sales on HA is quite interesting, there hasn't been a sale over the 100k mark since 2011, which is presumably when that key collector (forget his name now) stopped collecting.

40k is probably a pretty decent result actually as the better ones seem to go for 60-70 now that were 100, 110 before

That's a rough haircut right there. 2017 lesson is: Barks and Elvgren = niche!

I don't know... I can't speak to Elvgren really but I wouldn't call Barks niche, exactly.     Just that the work that's actually available (commissioned 1970s paintings) is not really what the market wants (1940s and 1950s published pages).

I could be wrong and it would bear some review and speaking to people actually involved but IIRC the gap between the paintings and the published pages (what few exist...) has narrowed considerably.    The pages have come up and the paintings come down.    I think some of the iconic ducks covers would do just fine if they were around... Rosa stuff does great and that's 1980s and 1990s Barks lite.     Unfortunately they aren't and so you have this strange and unique marketplace where there's lots of love for the artist but people can't purchase the art from the stories they read...   only these... (25 years after the fact) single scene painted recreations by an artist who was, much as I love him, well past his prime in the 1970s and never a great painter to begin with despite being magic at one time with pen and ink.

Its almost like... I dunno... taking the market for John Totleben (since you and I have thrown that name around before) and destroying 99.9% of the published 1980s Swamp Thing and Miracleman pages, and having the market be entirely fan commissioned paintings from the 2000 - 2010 time frame.    Those commissioned MM and ST paintings would be a volatile and niche market also.

Substitute pretty much any other name and key work and you'd get the same result.
