Or Going above and beyond

Fixing a dreaded fear

The latest invoice that changed to shipped/safe was not shipped/safe when I found out the grades. I originally called the offices because two invoices that were marked as such had no tracking numbers sent to me. This was odd because I normally have an email in my inbox from Kim. This time, it was not the case.

A friendly call had me get both tracking numbers I needed. I threw caution to the wind and asked about my 14 books from Baltimore. They were marked grading/quality control but was finalized and about to be changed to shipped/safe. I asked for the grades. I was knocked for a loop when the third one read off went was now a 9.6. How did this happen. They were 9.8's? Did I not turn my head quick enough when I sneezed? Was it to close to the pizza with extra sauce? How did all my meticulous planning change from the desired result. I hung up the phone disappointed.

I decided upon a gamble and called back. The person that gave me the grades and shipping numbers was not the same person that answered the phones this time. And after the automatic sequence was finally answered I found out I had the pleasure of talking to Molly. I told her the situation (and don't believe her if she said I was crying) and asked if she could pull them from the invoice for pressing and get graded again. She said she could...if she liked me...then hung up. I was lost, I was fearful. I wondered if I should call back and ask why I was treated with such disparity.

I quickly thought about the nickname running through the CGC building she has and even the few times I used it and felt, so much for the idea of her helping. Ok, in actuality, she put me on hold and I listened intently to all the information a prerecording gave me about NGC. And once Molly came back on the phone she took my number and said she would have to call back. An excruciating amount of time later, she was as good as her word. Six of the books that did not attain the 9.8 grade were looked at by Matt Nelson. Four of the six he felt could be improved. I decided to have it done.

Molly needed me to write a letter stating I wanted the four removed from my current invoice and to begin the process all over again. With my credit card on file, my books were once again going through the process, this time starting from CCS. Would I have saved some money if I did send them to CCS first? Should I have listened to the sage advice from my younger brother (and let's face it, who really listens to advice from a younger sibling?) However, if I did, I wouldn't have found out a very valuable fact, Molly does indeed like me.

Thank you Molly for being one of the reasons why I like CGC so much. Your customer service and brightly lit attitude makes it a pleasant experience every time I have to call.

Thanks for Reading

Ok, so I don't always give the best advice. So sue me! lol

Funny funny. I do agree about Molly. She has always been a pleasure to deal with. As you say, she is bright, chipper and always ready to lend a hand or go the extra mile for you. She is one of the biggest reasons I love dealing with CGC as well.

It's neat to be on a first name basis with the CGC crew. Wen I cal them, they know exactly who I am and it's like talking to close friends. I love it!

I too was bummed to hear about your grade drops. As per our previous conversations, I have gotten to where I always press before regrading after a cracking/signing.

Some may call it an "insurance policy" but I simply think of it as giving the issue the best possible chance to retain grade. I have one recent invoice of 9 issues back now that I did NOT press before regrading, and luckily, they all came back still 9.8!!!

But due to experience and as you have now seen, no matter how careful you may be, there is always the chance that some of them may not retain. It is the risk we all take when cracking for sigs.

It does cost $12 per issue to press, but if the issues drops after not pressing, it will cost you an extra grading plus the pressing ($28). These are modern costs, of course. You also have the option to do 20 or more for quick press at $8 each for cheaper cost. Or you can even fast track the pressing for $6 more per issue ($18 total), and let me tell you what, this saves a BOATLOD of time!

Just getting pressed can take up to 45 days or more, but with fast track, it usually takes only 10 to 14 days!

Yes these are extra costs, but if the issue is THAT important to you to retain or achieve the desired grade, it will give it a better chance.

Now when it comes to older issues, like the 70s and earlier, the decision to press becomes more iffy. Older comics can have deterioration that isn't as noticeable sometimes and can drastically affect the benefits of pressing. This is where Matt comes in. He is an expert at telling you whether the issue in question is worth pressing or not, and will be brutally honest about it even if it means his opinion causes you to not spend the money for a press.

Anyway, my fingers are tired now, so I'll stop giving out bad advice now. lol

You're the best, big brother! I hope they bump back up for you.

The same thing happened to me this time; I had to call to get the tracking number for an invoice on its way. I wasn't sure if there had been a mix-up on the status board. I also made the mistake of using USPS registered mail for this one, which is taking way too long. Or is it? I don't know, because USPS hasn't updated the tracking since Nov 21, when it departed the sort facility in Sarasota. Bah! It honestly hasn't been scanned anywhere since Thursday? Is it still on the truck? Is it headed to my house now? (shrug)

I think I'm additionally antsy because it was marked "Shipped/Safe" on the 19th, but apparently after shipping hours, so it didn't even make it to the post office until the 20th. One of the many drawbacks of checking my status three times a day like a compulsive maniac. :insane: I still haven't checked my grades, and the suspense is killing me.

Do they refer to you as Mr Fleas or are you on a first name basis? I'm guessing it's something like, "hey Bago, how you doin?"

If you cry on the phone, who cares who you like?
