It may also depend if the tanning is causing the paper to become brittle or not.

 

..... I think you hit the nail on the head there. Tanning that has lighter areas within the dark are entering terminal degradation. If it were me, I would downgrade for tanning if the cover stock has gotten "stiff"..... lost it's suppleness. GOD BLESS....

P.S. I would prefer a book with C/OW supple pages and White cover stock to a book with White pages and cover tanning..... I'd even pay a little extra.
